I absolutely appreciate that this is the only foreign version that still is Romanian, given the conductor I wouldn't expect anything else, but much like Romanian humbleness this is a very "nice" version which I'm a bit sadden about. I can only hope that one day Romanians will be more proud of all the incredible talents we've produced and play this Romanian rhapsody in all its Romanian glory! I understand he had to adjust it to more western taste but I'm sorry, you didn't see Rubinstein dumbing down Chopin's Polonaise and that's exactly why he will be forever regarded as one of the most incredible pianists of the century!!! He took that polish and jewish pride with him and gave everyone a proper taste of it! Not just a little flavour but the whole thing and beyond! And I hope we'll see some of that with Enescu one day too because he was a very proud Romanian which is exactly why he wanted to immortalise its very spirit in this incredible rhapsody. I think it's about time western Europe starts to get to know us a bit more and a bit better but that has to start with us!

un des opus les plus décoiffants du vingtième siècle ! Impossible de résister au second mouvement ! Et quelle interprétation ! Difficile de comparer avec celle de Celibidache, au son "d'époque".

Excellent rendition by maestro Măcelaru, with the WDR Orchestra responding exquisitely to the conductor's demanding tempi and dynamics. However I cannot help wondering if maestro Măcelaru would approach this masterpiece exactly the same way if he performed it in Romania. I seem to perceive a slight effort to adapt the interpretation to the Western taste, particularly by putting more rhythm and dynamics into the slower movements which are supposed to resonate more with the spirit of the traditional Romanian 'doina'. But I think this is fair under the circumstances and I don't see it as a flaw to this - again - very nice performance.
Absolutely agree with you on that! But I do think it's flawed because I'm sorry it's like "european food" in Asia, or Chinese food in Europe, you're actually depriving people of a true and authentic taste which is the very reason they're listening to this to begin with BUT it's still Romanian!! Which can't be said about the Berliner Phil version or god forbid the royal English or royal Scottish orchestra who played the Romanian rhapsody and literally butchered the life out of it!!! But I can see in the faces of the musicians that expression of "I'm playing something exotic" 🤣 which is a bit off..Also watch Arthur Rubinstein playing chopin, Polonaise in Moscow ! You don't see him dumbing it down, quite the opposite he's like, here's Poland!!! In all its pride and you're going to sit there Russia and hear it out in all its glory!! And I wish to see Romanians one day have the guts and pathos to do the same one day, unapologetically and full of pride!!
I partially agree with you. I think that there is no thing such as 'western taste'. Romanian music is complex and dynamic, so to speak. And this rhytm is just fine. I mean its originary from lautareasca music and trust me they were nothing short of dynamic:))
