not to sound like a coot, but...
North America started really going downhill when they stopped manufacturing their own products. With pride. Even in the last 20 years or so the quality of clothing has really tanked. I don't mean styles - I just mean how well they're made. Anyway, that's just one example. I'm sure you can think of a lot of others.

Now mainstream republicans denounce the war themselves even though in those days “to be a patriot meant to support your nation and to support the president and to support the war and to hate those that the president says to hate” but those same people now call that mentality “sheep” - so if those were the good old days, then being sheep was the good old days?

Savor the moments of your life and get as much enjoyment from them as you can. They always tell me that they don't regret the things they've done anywhere near as much as they regret the things they didn't do. The time they wasted on things that seem stupid and insignificant now but which seemed important then. My grandmother was born in 1894. She said much the same thing. Here parents took her west to Kansas where they homesteaded. She want to Kansas State University (then the Kansas School of Agriculture) and become the first woman to graduate for that institution. She became a teacher. She lived through the depression and the dust bowl. My mother was 7 years old when the dust bowl got started. My grandparents could have given up, but they didn't. They kept working and struggling and continued to try to help build a better country and a better tomorrow. My dad reached his 18th birthday just a few months before Pearl Harbour was bombed. He enlisted in the Navy soon thereafter. He became a medical corpsman on a great big battleship. After the war he went to college on the GI Bill. Then came Korea, and he was recalled to active duty. He then served on a tiny little destroyer escort, again as a medical corpsman. His education was interrupted, but he didn't complain. He served, then went back to college and earned an MD. I came along when he was in medical school. It was difficult raising a child while trying to get through medical school with only the GI Bill and the money my mother and he could earn from his part time job, but they made it. They were in extreme poverty the whole time through. We lived in the projects in St. Louis while he struggled to work and get through school all with a baby in tow, but he persevered, and succeeded. My parents set an excellent example for me, and to honour their efforts I worked as hard as I could on my studies in order that I could get into the best university I could. I went to one of the very best, and with my parents' effort in mind, I became the only woman in ROTC at the time. I graduated with honours, and served as I'd been trained to do. Then, like my father, my mother, and my grandparents, I returned to school and worked my way through a PhD, this time at one of the world's best universities. I had my baby, and I raised him in the tradition of my family, taking delight in the day, and the little serendipitys which grace us every day. When his country called, he served, but he paid with his life. My only child paid with his life. Yet I see so many people who do not care. They don't care about our sacrifice and they don't care enough to be informed and to vote. They think it won't make a difference, when in fact it is the ONLY thing that will make a difference. I see the decline brought on by greed and corruption, and I see no one willing to work to rid the country of it, or really to work for much of anything. I don't understand. I really don't understand. And like the man in this video, I fear greatly for the future of this nation. I lost my child, and my husband died of cancer. I was hit by a drunk driver about 20 years ago and am paralyzed from the shoulders down as a result. It hurts me deeply when I find that the aides who take care of my have no clue what's going on and won't vote to change the things they see are wrong. It hurts that they have no ambition to improve themselves further than where they are. I can and do try to give them guidance, but in the end I am responsible only for myself, and if they don't see a future for themselves other than what they're doing, and don't want to strive for something better, what can I do? Nothing except enjoy the day anyhow, and hope that somehow the country I love will find a way to pull through as a free nation, not one misguided by a wrongly placed sense of nationalism. Love for country isn't expressed by right wing or left wing political views. It is expressed by continuing to do the best you can in the interest of building a better future. Without almost everyone working toward that goal we cannot succeed. One of my teachers in college admonished me once when I'd spent a weekend slacking off, "You can't coast for long unless you're going downhill." There are a lot of people who are coasting, and spending more time attacking each other. Unless we can put our differences aside and work for a better tomorrow for all our citizens then we will be coasting and going downhill, and the things that many of us sacrificed for will be wasted. I hate that I will die seeing it all thrown away. I weep with him because, even though I have not been granted the years he's had, I understand all too well where those tears are coming from. We are of one heart, he and I. We see it happening, and we are powerless to do anything about it.
We weep. We fear. Was it all for nothing? He and I will never know. We will have to go to our end with an unanswered question on our minds. We will do so however, seeing the beauty which remains in life in spite of what is going on. It doesn't take things to be happy. It only takes being thankful for every single day and every single hour, and what our all too short lives are filled with, and to be grateful for it.
Please. Redouble your efforts. Have goals for improving yourself and to improve your country. Start learning about current events, and vote. If there are onl tyrants running, run yourself. Love your country. Love your life. Thanking us for our service then doing nothing with what we've fought for is no thanks at all. Show us you appreciate our service by doing your best for yourself AND your country. It's an uphill struggle, but you don't get to the mountain top by coasting. Don't thank us for our service unless you are willing to prove that you mean it. But please, do mean it.
Please, let us live to see the change. Start now.

As a retired vet, I feel what he is saying. He's absolutely right in the state of our nation. We loved our country so much, whether our leader's cause was justified or not, we answered and stood the watch. Our nation has lost its way. When you were born the USA had a 50% world GDP which is absolutely absurd considering how many other people live on the planet. Today the USA has a 24% of world GDP, and if everything goes well as it should, the USA would get its fair 5%. The elder today in the US is extremely privileged, making what you complain about just sad.

I agree, also this land that we call United States of America was robbed from Native Americans.
If the Native Americans can’t have their God-given land, then no one should be able to live on this stolen property. I appreciate all the people that fought for America’s values and rights that I have as a US citizen and I’m grateful for it but it wasn’t even worth it in the end because the only thing actually in control is the people who can’t control what’s being shown on the television on the Internet

I´m Spanish and I'm not sure why TH-cam recommended this to me, but I am deeply moved by this video. Young people like me don't really appreciate what we have as we have grown in already prosperous developed countries with more or less mature democracies. We take a lot of things for granted. We forgot that all we got is thanks to the blood and sweat of the great people that preceded us. We should be more humble, and grateful, and take great care of the legacy of people like this man.

I live in a third world country, however i'm in a much better place than my great-grandparents were. They lived in a adobe hut in a poor farming community in a time many died out of starvation and disease, nowadays many people are obese because their calorie intake is too high, their body movement is too low and the largest disease is diabetes.

History lesson: Spain was informally allied with Germany. The USA's allies, the British, had openly threatened Spain with annihilation. The Spanish-speaking world was informally on Germany's side because it had exactly the same problems with the English-speaking world as the Germans. Moreover, the USA had isolated Spain in terms of foreign policy until the 1970s - hence the poverty in Spain. Spaniards are the last people who owe anything to the invading armies of the Americans, British and French, on the contrary.

So many died, and were wounded. And they believed in our country. I've been thinking recently, if my dad was alive today, he would be heartbroken. Same with my mom. Our lives and society were bought for the price they paid. Shame on those who don't appreciate the gift they've been given.

Generations aren’t growing more weak mentally, and even if they were that’s not why people suffer. To quote John Quincy Adams “I am a warrior, so that my son may be a merchant, so that his son may be a poet.”
People growing less warrior-like, less hard, that isn’t a bad thing. That is what we should honestly strive for, to do away with petty greed and the mistreatment of people by oligarchs and those greedy parasites at the top who haven’t slaved a day yet steal untold billions. To do away with the useless suffering of war and of poverty, all of which are driven by mans greed for power.
