im sad cuz ive been hunting for a non-galactic priced regular celeste for ages and this video will now put it even further out of reach ahahah. anyone else surprised to see no sustain? i always thought this was a fundamental part of the celeste..?
“Sounds incredible”, I was thinking it sounds shitty. Sounds like a cheap Kids xylophone from China, which is not a good place to build sounds from. But I imagine if someone is spending around £20k on a piece of rare vintage crap then people are going to romanticise. But let’s be honest, ears are still a thing - that is a very rare vintage piece of shite.
Beautiful instrument! Hard to understand why Fender only made ten of them, after taking the time and effort to develop it ... and it having such a wondrous tone.
The moment you heard it, your irrepressible expression... priceless. That was when I thought: Pianobook, Pianobook, Pianobook! A million and one thanks in advance. I'll be there on the 12th.
The moment you lifted the lid, Christian! And then the moment you realized it's a gem! Absolutely amazing! And thank you, as always for sharing this with all of us. Can't wait to play with it! Have fun :D
To be really honest, I have never been a fan of the Rhodes but i must say this Celeste sounds absolutely gorgeous! My spending habits on gear is simple, when i've got dosh, I buy gear. Thats why i've never got dosh! lol
Truly an extraordinary instrument. It was a total blast watching you discover its true nature. Many of us have that "bad room" where our unfortunate equipment decisions go to die. I certainly do. However I also have a well equiped toy room and can report that for you, me and many of our friends a bad room is actually required for to have a super happy fun room.
Very cool to see one of these played! I used to work for the number one Rhodes tech in Hollywood during Covid. I got to see tons of Rhodes and Wurlitzers and Hammonds restored to mint and I will never forget the amazing time I had there. I had read and heard about this but never got to actually see or hear one!
Hello, my name is Jon and I'm a Reverbaholic. (Hi Jon) Okay, I have been following you for about a year now because you have some great videos that I have learned from. But this! This has got to be your best video ever! The look on your face when you press those keys and learn it's actually a celeste is priceless. So we need to form a Reverb type 1 buyer recovery group.
Christian... are you absolutely bonkers? £16K really? And then I heard it, oh! Then at 8:11.... oh!... now I understand... I love being type 1. Grand purchase my dear fellow.
Okay... when it comes to sample libraries, I am MOST DEFINITELY a Type 1 consumer... especially with Spitfire and another unnamed company! Even though I've not had much time to dig into the libraries I've purchased, I still get more!! Seeing the look on your face when you realized that you hadn't been scammed was priceless!!!
When you dropped it a couple of octaves!! Amazing!! Just discovered this channel and I love it. Personally, I'm a type 1 consumer! It is a good job I don't have much in the way of disposable income, otherwise every time a new edition of Sound On Sound comes out I'd be buying every trinket that catches my eye!
I love it but I was hoping it was a bass axe gnorrr! It reminds me of the Angelo Badalamenti music from Twin Peaks!! Lovely glutinous neve sound. Cool intro too that was mad real.
Congratulations, have fun with the Celeste. Thanks for the sampled version though. For the type of consumer, I think most of the people are type one, but many times our urge is rein by limiters of every day life challenges and priorities.
Thank you for your help in identifying my disease. I have come to recognize it over the years. Even when anticipated that warm endorphin rush from buying new gear is irresistible. It hits the low point for me when I re-buy something I have already owned and sold before. That has happened a bunch of times.
Wow...beautiful sound...glad it worked out. I have found out recently that buying music equipment can be very addictive....I try to do as much research as possible on pieces before buying, so havent had any buyers remorse on any big ticket items......so far...LOL
Christian, that was absolutely genius. Pitching it down that is. I’m imagining it produces a lot of harmonics post 20k. Your reaction was priceless too. Best video you’ve done in a while. I’m so excited to get the samples from piano book!
I want an electric celeste now. I think this would be a wonderful to have in a kids bedroom for playing to them when they are little, and then letting them begin to explore music with it as they get less little. What a pretty sound.
Well if this channel has one of the ten or so that exist, good luck paying a fortune. This isn't something that belongs around children, as much as I believe children should be encouraged to discover and learn. They're just going to spill their juice on it and ruin a nearly priceless piece of music.
What a beautiful instrument! I'd have to describe myself as a type two since the world shut down, although I did pick up Symphonic Organ recently. I've had my eye on it since seeing "The House With the Clocks in the Wall" with my kids. ...cheers
Hi, no longer capable of playing guitar or piano (arthritis winning).... stumbled into your excited Fender Rhodes Celeste reveal ...wonderful sound...would suggest perhaps a quick performance of the haunting clarinet opening from the OST of the supernatural thriller film The Fury (circa late 70's early 80's) as a Halloween celebration point of interest featuring the Celeste with your remarkable versatility in production....would be a hoot!
From the moment you played the Celeste my jaw dropped, it remained dropped throughout the course of you playing it i may of herd one somewhere somehow, but wow its so touching also when you lowered the octave. As for my spending habits, its completely bonkers i am constantly traveling/working (out grinding for the coin) im splashing cash on alot of highly priced gear Synths/drum machines the usual but the bonkers part is... well im not really getting a chance to use them despite having an infinite love for all i have bought and desperate to use them.. well i just dont have the time because like ive said im constantly traveling and thats part of my job. having said that im trying to take certain pieces with me and write in hotels rooms etc so.. thats how it goes for me! im sure there will eventually be a chill period with work at some point, so i can sort my next album!
Could this be what the intro line to King Harvest's 'Dancing in the Moonlight' is played on, or is that just a teased up Rhodes piano? I does sound like a regular piano as the song moves on, but that little 'pingy' line at the beginning... maybe? The raw sound you got instantly reminded me of the intro to that song.
Your sheer joy was a joy Christian. Please oh please 🙏 make a Pianobook instrument for us all to share in your Joy! What more fitting an addition to the new site!!! Cheers 🍻
It's beautiful. I hope it's worth breaking the bank on the current project. Thanks for sharing. You're going to put it on piano book! There's a place for you in heaven.
There's a fascinating question here. Are all Rhodes Celestas? Celestas, pianos, Rhodes are all Idaphones - they work by striking a resonant body. But is the Rhodes (tine) closer to a glockenspiel or a hammered string (piano)? And does that consideration change as the Rhodes mechanism is different for higher octaves in a 'standard' MK I?
Granted that 90% of us do some impulse purchasing, buying RME interfaces that you *never* use puts you in a different category, Christian! 8-) Congrats on that celeste. It sounds lovely, and I'm looking forward to hearing some of it in Pianobook or other future sample libraries. -Tom
I ordered a new keyboard as a preorder while I had a bad flu a couple of weeks ago. Didn’t even think twice. Not quite sure if it was the flu or the product yet. Still pretty excited for all it can do. Definitely not at the same cool factor as what you showed in this video though. I go through a reset every fall and usually order some new gear and end up using half of it. Thanks for sharing this experience with us. Looking forward to the updated website.
Some instruments (guitars mostly) have "spoken" to me and told me "I have a song hidden inside for you!" Other times just the sheer beauty of a guitar can cause me to open my pockets and invite it into my collection,... which by most standards isn't all that much,... just reached 50 guitars and 10 assorted amps (amps tend to be a smaller collection),... but, I in fact do play them all, and most have been recorded as well.
Glad you are happy with it given you spent quite a bit for it. I am not sure what you'd use it for given you could probably get the basic sound out of numerous popular workstations. But there is the thrill of owning a rare piece of gear.
Some years ago, an orchestra (no name, no shame), borrowed my Yamaha DX7 Mark 1 for a performance of Allegro Non Troppo, the first movement from Malcolm Arnold's Second Set of English Dances Opus 33, which requires a celeste. The orchestra baulked at the cost of hiring a real celeste, and so I stepped in and tweaked the (programmed by Dave Bristow, I believe) factory preset to the percussionist's preference. The DX7 was carefully placed in the percussion section so that it was almost impossible to see from the audience, and the performance was a great success.
I'm a Type 2 consumer for sure, although even that hasn't stopped me from regretting some of my purchases. That celeste sounds absolutely unbelievable - particularly pitched down like that. On a side note - are you enjoying Entangled Life? I thought it was fantastic!
Definitely type 1 here, though budget (usually) governed. Usually an early morning purchaser. Usually sitting on the loo. Out with the old and in with the new, so to speak.
I loved seeing a C414 in front of you instead of that massive RE20. C414 is my one and only mic, total swiss army knife. Oh, that Celeste sounds AMAZING. Labs??
Sounds gorgeous. I laughed out loud at some of your tiny purchases. I was prepared for it to be the most expensive turkey you'd ever bought, but I'm glad it wasn't! Look forward to using the sampled version at some point - I would definitely use it.
I buy things in the hope that it'll inspire me to make something new. Sometimes a shitty thing can be good and sometimes bad. Finding musical "gear" is an art of it's own. It's part of discovering yourself somehow. You get to know yourself thru the things you create with. If this makes any sense..
you should turn that broken or decommissioned gear room in the basement u show at the beginning into a reverb chamber, or a really cool slap delay… just use that bose at one end and a mic at the opposite end.. set up a send… viola! i bet it would sound cool… u could rearrange things in the room (like adding, subtracting, placing moving objects in the room, move mic(s) n speaker(s to get the sound you want.
For those of us who have the same sort of buying issues... can you tell us what keyboard you use most of the time? Your go-to keyboard for use with Abbey Road et al? I'm thinking of upgrading my MPK 261 and would love to have what you use (if I could afford it).
Ha, when you hit that first chord, my immediate thought was, "You NEED to sample that!!!". Beautiful sounding and very Rhodes-like. Oh,and I'm a serious type 2 buyer. I research the bloody heck out of every purchase and am always available for hire.😁
The sheer joy on your face, “it’s a fucking celeste!”, brought tears to my eyes. I hope you have many happy years with your new investment.
Ha ha ha!
Same here, it was such a happy reveal.... much needed after a couple of heavy days this week
im sad cuz ive been hunting for a non-galactic priced regular celeste for ages and this video will now put it even further out of reach ahahah. anyone else surprised to see no sustain? i always thought this was a fundamental part of the celeste..?
It was genuinely the look all parents hope to see on their kids faces on Christmas lol. Awesome!

"It's a fucking celeste" and the sheer joy on your face is probably the most emotional moment I've seen in one of your videos. And I've seen them all.

What a beautiful sound! That nervousness before playing it, followed by your jubilation and glee is wonderful. Thanks for sharing Christian!
It was wonderful to see that kind of joy :D
To be really honest, I have never been a fan of the Rhodes but i must say this Celeste sounds absolutely gorgeous!
My spending habits on gear is simple, when i've got dosh, I buy gear. Thats why i've never got dosh! lol

Okay, I have been following you for about a year now because you have some great videos that I have learned from.

Really chuffed for you.
The boyish delight when you played it, was so lovely. You deserve it.
Such an inspiring sound.

Sounds like the instrument that opens Dancing in the Moonlight. You just about play the lick at one point.
5:21 - best reaction EVER! Not sure, but I got sooo excited when it turned out to be a Celeste. Absolute TH-cam gold, Christian! 👍👍👍👍
New to the channel. Thought this was amazing! So glad it was what you hoped for. This video comes out on the day I'm unboxing a Lumatone. Awesome!

Man, as soon as you hit those keys for the first time I yelled along with you, “It’s a CELESTE”! Great sound and that red shell is dynamite

Can this be fitted with a Rhodes sustain pedal?
Now if anyone needs a theme song for a new early 1980s sitcom, you're all set.
Really enjoying your content (lovely sounding celeste BTW) especially as you are a little more 'expressive' here than on the spitfire films!

Is that a Deckard's Dream I spotted? A video on that would be great. Not that this one wasn't good, lovely sound!

I was listing after this for MONTHS and like you didn’t know if it was actually a Celeste or not.
Congratulations!
