This is great! You’re Getting to the core of some many of our communities stereotypes. Thanks for discussing this.
It’s Funny Hearing you Trying to figure out if you’re modern orthodox… but Why do we label ?
We all have the same goals-To be good ppl and connect to hashem in our way, in a way that speaks to us individually. And be a light upon the other nations.

Ben spends most of that article talking about gay marriage and gender identity. For Ben, taking a hard line stance of those issues defines whether or not somebody is authentically Jewish. I disagree. You can support equal rights for LGBT people and treat them with kindness and respect. And you can be observant Jewish: keep Shabbat; observe the holidays; raise your children Jewish, and related. There is no conflict between the two. G-d wants us to do both.

Being a believer in the Christ is 100% not compatible with Judaism. If you do not believe in the Christ as Messiah, you might explore further.

Modern orthodoxy is an oxymoron! Ppl that say they are modern Orthodox use it as an excuse for not keeping halacha! Eg. I don't cover my hair after I marry bec. "I am modern Orthodox" I am not judging ... But don't use that as an excuse. If your not up to doing that mitzvah I can hear you but don't use " modern orthodoxy" as an excuse. Just say it as it is. It's like saying " I speak lashon hara, but it's ok bec I am chassidish! We don't get to pick and choose which part of the Torah we keep! We are obligated in all of it! It doesn't mean we don't mess up but we need to follow halacha! Also all those schools that don't teach their boys secular subjects after 8th grade, most of them are just fine in the world later in their lives. And for those who want to up their education can very easily do so in a frum environment! Not YU!

I agree with you how would this scenario work for a baal tshuvah?

Absolutely. We have both our relationship with HaShem with our community work and our self work/personal relationship. Honestly starts within. I never want to begrudgingly do a mitzvah because I feel like I have to. I never want to lose my thirst for my relationship with G-d. As someone who was not brought up Hassidic or Haredi, I feel out of place in the "ultra" Orthodox community. To me Modern Orthodoxy just means non-Haredi Orthodox. The only real purpose of labeling that I see is in finding the right Shul and Rabbi, as well as a spiritually compatible spouse.
