I live in Israel and have a solution for the problem of using a roll of plastic wrap on Shabbat. Available in all the supermarkets here are "shower caps" which come in a box of 20 and stretch over bowls and platters. If you can find shower caps in the dollar store you could use them.

I am Jewish but not religious. When my parents were alive, we did celebrate rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur, Passover, and Hanukkah I still do as a single mom but not as much as I should. I am a Christian, and I believe, according to scripture, that the Sabbath Day is a REST unto the LORD and that it is a universal principle for all people! As a result, I would love to be more devout in keeping it, even though unfortunately, it is not taught in our church! But for me, I have often denoted Sundays as a DAY of REST unto the LORD, when I am not working
I am a practicing Christian and these videos of Jewish celebrations (especially Shabbath) makes me think I should really try to start keeping Shabbath with my family. Many Christians have forgotten the value of Shabbath or never really understood it. Also other celebrations seem wonderful.
I’ve tried to do it! I just should get my husband on board to be able to make it a weekly habit. It’s clearly a gift from God also for us Christians - we need our weekly rest to spend time in the presence of the Lord.

I agree it is hard for most people to understand the concepts of rest, not working or using forms energy or how we eat...most see it as restrictive. Shabbat Shalom, Sonya. I just found your channel. My mother passed away the last week. She was my only family. Unfortunately I'm not blessed with children. Now when I found your channel I feel comforted. Your family is beautiful and it reminds me all those times with my family when I still lived with them. I'm originally from Prague. Many blessings to you and your family.
I have said it many times in my comments on your videos but I have to say it with hige emphasis, YOU as the woman of the house are AMAZING in all that you do! Some of what you do reminds me of how Sundays were when I was growing up. All stores closed on Sunday so of you didn't have it Saturday by 5 or 6, you were without it til Monday! All families back in my day (mid to late 50s and into the early 60s) would have all house work done in and out the house because Sunday was a day of rest! My mom had all the shopping done, and a slow roast or stew was in a low oven early sides were generally cooked with the roast or the night before! No tv for most of the day! Just the radio tuned into a sermon, The Lutheran Hour and then soft music of the day. It was church, then come home and my mom and all was heated for family that came over. Good china, cut crystal and the special silverware came out! There was no going out to play with friends on Sunday!! It was definitely a more peaceful way to end the weekend and start the work/school week and it sad how far we have strayed from it. Your home and traditions are lovely and I so enjoy watching it and learning!

You can buy bees wax coated food wraps in various sizes (Amazon). They are cloth soaked in bees wax. Great for for the environment and I believe Shabbat. I enjoy your videos. It takes me back to times when stores were closed on Sunday and families could spend time together and it was truly a day of rest. Greetings from 🇨🇦
Honestly, growing up in a time when stores (even groceries) were closed on Sunday was another aspect that made Shabbat observance more difficult, because it meant that both days off were restricted in what could be done. Nowadays, I can plan all my errands for Sunday, the one day I have free to do things. (I generally plan my week, my meals, get groceries, go to my off-site storage, go to the pharmacy, etc.)
I also have the Feit smart switches and outlets - they’re great! Always nice seeing the whole Prep family getting involved! Love your cooking and food prep, but this was a nice peek into “behind the scenes”!
Great tip to cover the hot plate with foil. Did not know about the sponges 😮. Love the light in the guest room. Will def order some. Such a helpful video! More like this please. ❤ 👍

The thing I find amazing is that you do this after a full day of work. I would need to have a written list to make sure my tired brain didn't forget something and I had to go a whole day without a light on. Especially in winter when Shabbat starts early this must take lots of planning.

Really enjoyed this video! Our fridge has a shabbat mode button so we just push it before shabbat it just turns the light off in the fridge...only challange with timers is with air conditioner or heating kind of have to check the weather before hand and hopefully get the settings and times right for heaters or aircons...will send you a pic of the disposable plastic covers I use to cover food with on shabbat! I enjoy your videos very much. I expected your resource to go to Leviticus and Exodus when God gave Israelites manna for two days to avoid work and enjoy rest and fellowship. The Holy Spirit prompted me to follow Sabbath and the feasts that were detailed in the Torah. Thank you for helping with my journey. Keep making more videos! Your home is beautiful and inspires me to observe Shabat. The votice candles were key as my candle resources have dwindled but the table was so beautiful with sliver candlesticks and flowers.
Hi Sonya. For shabbos I use twist tie baggies to lay over things that need plastic like let’s say a fruit platter … because the precut plastic wrap for me got stuck to everything and then didn’t stick where I needed it. Lol. I just lay it over the item and if necessary I also pre ripped the ties in case I needed one. Also there are stretchy container : bowl covers that I use on shabbos that are very helpful. 😊
Yes, I often just use a plastic grocery bag to encase a foil pan of food that I'm putting in the fridge. (Of course, now plastic grocery bags have been banned....)
Wow! I knew about all the other preparations for Shabbat you explained except for the wringing of the sponge. It is so hard to keep shabbat as a single person who converted. It is so beautiful though. Thank you for sharing.
As a kid we didn't know that either.. the Shabbos sponge came out about 8-10 years ago. Before that, some people used plastic bags. This is much better!

Very interesting to see and learn all the preparations that go into the celebration. It is a lot to do every week but it seems to be a very rewarding experience and it is part of your identity and your life style is centered around it. It is a wonderful thing to experience such peace and calmness for your family and household. I was wondering if you have family or close friends spend a Shabbat with you and if they spend the whole weekend sleeping over because of the restriction of driving? I love that my Jewish friend explained it as not allowed to do anything that requires work. And that you are not even allowed to ask someone to do it for you, like she can't ask someone to push her floor on the elevator, she cant even tell them if they ask, she just says "I'll get off on your floor" and use the stairs the rest of the way. I think she said her building is looking at turning one of the elevators into a Shabbas elevator, that its constantly running and programmed to stop on every floor and automatically opens the doors on each floor, kinda the same idea as your timer for your fridge

@@SonyasPrep I would say in the last 20 years or so I have seen a movement to most people using tissues, instead of tearing TP. In commercial settings (shul bathrooms) you may be more likely to see individual precut TP squares.

I have said it many times in my comments on your videos but I have to say it with hige emphasis, YOU as the woman of the house are AMAZING in all that you do! Some of what you do reminds me of how Sundays were when I was growing up. All stores closed on Sunday so of you didn't have it Saturday by 5 or 6, you were without it til Monday! All families back in my day (mid to late 50s and into the early 60s) would have all house work done in and out the house because Sunday was a day of rest! My mom had all the shopping done, and a slow roast or stew was in a low oven early sides were generally cooked with the roast or the night before! No tv for most of the day! Just the radio tuned into a sermon, The Lutheran Hour and then soft music of the day. It was church, then come home and my mom and all was heated for family that came over. Good china, cut crystal and the special silverware came out! There was no going out to play with friends on Sunday!!
It was definitely a more peaceful way to end the weekend and start the work/school week and it sad how far we have strayed from it. Your home and traditions are lovely and I so enjoy watching it and learning!

You can buy bees wax coated food wraps in various sizes (Amazon). They are cloth soaked in bees wax. Great for for the environment and I believe Shabbat. I enjoy your videos. It takes me back to times when stores were closed on Sunday and families could spend time together and it was truly a day of rest. Greetings from 🇨🇦
Honestly, growing up in a time when stores (even groceries) were closed on Sunday was another aspect that made Shabbat observance more difficult, because it meant that both days off were restricted in what could be done. Nowadays, I can plan all my errands for Sunday, the one day I have free to do things. (I generally plan my week, my meals, get groceries, go to my off-site storage, go to the pharmacy, etc.)

The thing I find amazing is that you do this after a full day of work. I would need to have a written list to make sure my tired brain didn't forget something and I had to go a whole day without a light on. Especially in winter when Shabbat starts early this must take lots of planning.

Beautiful Shabbat prep.... As Sephardic myself, I used to do all of that with my family when I was younger. So it brought me back to old memories (not that I stopped, but things are different now) Shabbat Shalom from my family to yours !

Really enjoyed this video! Our fridge has a shabbat mode button so we just push it before shabbat it just turns the light off in the fridge...only challange with timers is with air conditioner or heating kind of have to check the weather before hand and hopefully get the settings and times right for heaters or aircons...will send you a pic of the disposable plastic covers I use to cover food with on shabbat! I enjoy your videos very much. I expected your resource to go to Leviticus and Exodus when God gave Israelites manna for two days to avoid work and enjoy rest and fellowship. The Holy Spirit prompted me to follow Sabbath and the feasts that were detailed in the Torah. Thank you for helping with my journey. Keep making more videos! Your home is beautiful and inspires me to observe Shabat. The votice candles were key as my candle resources have dwindled but the table was so beautiful with sliver candlesticks and flowers.

I am not Jewish, so I don't really know alot about it. I am fascinated by all the videos you share. I love learning.
Hi Sonya. For shabbos I use twist tie baggies to lay over things that need plastic like let’s say a fruit platter … because the precut plastic wrap for me got stuck to everything and then didn’t stick where I needed it. Lol. I just lay it over the item and if necessary I also pre ripped the ties in case I needed one. Also there are stretchy container : bowl covers that I use on shabbos that are very helpful. 😊

Yes, I often just use a plastic grocery bag to encase a foil pan of food that I'm putting in the fridge. (Of course, now plastic grocery bags have been banned....)

Wow! I knew about all the other preparations for Shabbat you explained except for the wringing of the sponge. It is so hard to keep shabbat as a single person who converted. It is so beautiful though. Thank you for sharing.
As a kid we didn't know that either.. the Shabbos sponge came out about 8-10 years ago. Before that, some people used plastic bags. This is much better!

Very interesting to see and learn all the preparations that go into the celebration. It is a lot to do every week but it seems to be a very rewarding experience and it is part of your identity and your life style is centered around it. It is a wonderful thing to experience such peace and calmness for your family and household. I was wondering if you have family or close friends spend a Shabbat with you and if they spend the whole weekend sleeping over because of the restriction of driving? The candles should generally stay lit until the Friday night meal is over, they don't need to stay on for the entire Shabbat

I love that my Jewish friend explained it as not allowed to do anything that requires work. And that you are not even allowed to ask someone to do it for you, like she can't ask someone to push her floor on the elevator, she cant even tell them if they ask, she just says "I'll get off on your floor" and use the stairs the rest of the way. I think she said her building is looking at turning one of the elevators into a Shabbas elevator, that its constantly running and programmed to stop on every floor and automatically opens the doors on each floor, kinda the same idea as your timer for your fridge

thank you sonya and family. everything was explained and shown with clarity, dignity. elegance.the smart appliances are new to me. its nice to see the children doing their part to prepare by tearing. when i lived in france individual sheets of toilet paper were readily available in every supermarket and grocery. usually in pink. sometimes lavender. here in the usa can be obtained through amazon under the name " plushi paper" .the best. love, valerie
yes one can purchase precut toilet paper or even use tissues if needed
@@SonyasPrep I would say in the last 20 years or so I have seen a movement to most people using tissues, instead of tearing TP. In commercial settings (shul bathrooms) you may be more likely to see individual precut TP squares.
