Thanks for this. I have changed my mind on a 997 purchase now.
@@bossadave they aren’t all like this 😆 this is just a rather bad example.
We’ve inspected plenty of nice ones aswell. But just shows the importance of a pre purchase inspection. It’s worth its weight in gold to any potential buyer.
@ you are right of course but I don’t think they live up to the reputation of reliability and build quality that many think of Porsche. Considering you work on so many cars do you think they are as dependable as all the motoring journalists proclaim?
@@bossadaveI suspect you’ve never owned a Porsche before. That is such a blanket statement on a product you’ve likely never owned. The Gent stated they’ve seen good cars.
The issue with the above car is nothing to do with the car but with how it was cared for. I’d rather go for their advice, choose and buy right than make a generalist conclusion and loose out on possibly the best made car’s money can buy out there.
@@y0057 had a Boxster and Cayman company cars in the past but not a 911. Both of which had their problems. My conclusion is based on the inspection whereby he comments regularly, "this is a common fault". Furthermore according to Warrantywise's Reliability Index, Porsche has been identified as the least reliable car brand in the UK. The index, which evaluates factors such as repair frequency and cost, assigned Porsche a reliability score of 35.1 out of 100, placing it below other premium brands like Land Rover and Jaguar.
good check and I think a lot 997 turbos and generally 997 models now have a bit of corrosion underneath. It is unfortunate to see it like this, but all things are replaceable. Front coolant hoses like you said is surprising how they are still held on lol. As mentioned by others, would have been good to check the turbochargers, to check ift he intercoolers are bone dry otherwise a rebuild for a turbo costs from £450-800 each without labour to remove the turbocharger. That labour apparently can increase greatly if there is too much corrodion on the oil feed pipes or some pipe which I cannot remember.
For manual owners, make sure ur flywheel has been changed, that is a big ticket item... and make sure your second gear does not popout on deceleration. From what I have seen a new flywheel/engine mounts/2nd gear detent has helped with this a lot in Turbos suffering from 2nd gear popout. Also some specialists such as AMS are able to change the flywheel without dropping the engine as long as you change the clutch kit too... massive savings, and massive props to AMS as I spoke to a lot of specialists who insisted the engine needs dropping.
Yes- the unloved examples especially, it’s easy to forget how old they are now…
As you say things can always be replaced, it just quickly adds up in cost.
We did check the turbos over- just didn’t capture everything we did. They were actually surprisingly okay 👍🏼 as you say when removing them costs can quickly spiral as it’s never a simple remove and replace, there will always be something where it’s stuck bolts/ banjos, or corroded oil feed / return pipes.
And yes we also never remove the engine for a flywheel / clutch change. It is simply unnecessary labour 👍🏼
@ 8:52 missing valve cap would tip the balance on me not purchasing the car for sure !
As if the rest of it wasn’t enough then sure thing 😄
@ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
nice car love it bit of work
Just imagine buying this car and not having an inspection FFS thankgod for TH-cam
@@gen4lifemusic633 yep.. it’s the reason people like us are here and why we would always recommend a pre purchase inspection to anyone looking to buy one 👍🏼👍🏼
I did buy this car. Saw the video after the purchase and returned for a full refund!
@@tomcourtney18 glad to hear we saved you a bit of a headache 🤕👍🏼
A lot of work to do on this car
Rusty banger for sale
You didn't go into any detail on the turbos .. which are known to rot out on these... and given the state of the the rest of the underside, i'd say it probably needs new turbos also.
Yeah we didn’t capture it on film, but we did inspect them and aside from the exhaust side fixings they were surprisingly okay 👍🏼
It’s been sitting in water
How many miles are in this turbo. Thx
This one has only done just over 60,000miles. You wouldn’t believe it from looking underneath it. 😅
We always say you are better off buying a higher mileage car with lots of history than a low mileage car with one stamp in the book.
@ wow and yes! And man that salt water really eats things up. Cheer
I am in shock! This exact car was on my shortlist when I was shopping for a 997 turbo. I even called the seller for a part exchange valuation on my 997 Carrera S. Thank God he didn't return my call with the valuation. I reckon I dodged a bullet!
@ we certainly saved you some hassle 😁 this is the exact reason we do this kind of thing. Anything you are considering buying it’s worth getting it checked out to avoid any hidden surprises/costs.
It’s no problem to buy a car like this as all of this could be put right, but only when the price reflects the issues!
@SportsVehiclePerformance That would've definitely have saved me a few grand of work to correct all those issues. If I went to see it, I would've definitely spotted a lot of those issues. I do a fair bit of work on my cars and when I picked up my 997 turbo, the seller thought I was doing a PPI for someone else. I owned a 997 Carrera S for 10 years, so had a little experience in the cars and the common failure points shared accross the range.
Were you doing a PPI for a potential customer on this car?
A 16 year old car is that rotten, what a shame 😢
I think this car has been parked in the blackpool sea😂
This has to be one of the worse condition 997.1 turbo I have ever seen. The amount of corrosion underneath this car showed the owner did not take good care of this poor car. I have 62k miles on my 2008 997 turbo and it looks brand new underneath. You have to put in the time and money to properly care for this kind of car. The rewards are many when you do.
You did not check the wing operation. Known to go bad on quite a few 996 and 997 turbos. Only the patented Rennkit eRam system is the correct repair.
We did, see it functioning correctly at 11:07 😉 we’ve repaired far too many of these to forget about them and their issues 👍🏼👍🏼
Obvioisly a car that lived in a cold climate that uses salt on the roads. This is nothing I've ever seen in Georgia USA
Yep the salt really does do some damage over here!
That car is falling apart lol
The topic should account for it being one of the worst examples.
On uk/eu cars these issues are fairly common 😄
