The song is strange in that it seems to be mostly in one perspective and then changes into another. The first perspective is actually the mother/caretaker. They are the one raising a child that they want to love. The issue is that her love is very restrictive, emotionally anyway. “Suck it up” is a harmful phrase said by parents who want their child to appreciate what they have but this phrase only downplays the child’s own struggles as a person of their own. Yes, sometimes it is better to discipline your child but to “suck it up” invalidates all those emotions and pain they might be experiencing. What interesting about this phrase is that this also a reflection on the mother which parallels perfectly with Ei’s own story. Though we dont know how Ei grew up, we do know that she suffered quite a bit before and during the 500 years after the Cataclysm. She didn’t feel love or support at all, not even from Yae Miko. So how is she able to raise a child who needs that love and support she herself needs? Well, she projects. She sucked it up and now he has to as well. The song itself reflects on this idea. She is questioning herself. The children and people who have suffered…was it truly fair of them to not also receive her support even if she was mentally cracking from the stress and pressure?
