Raising the prices for international customers while keeping Japanese prices flat is a 1-2 punch for international shoppers who tried placing orders earlier but were turned down because of Hobonichi’s mistake! Really disappointed
Just remember other companies sell them, and then Hobonichi will likely make less since selling to vendors in bulk tends to lower the price they charge the vendor. JetPens and Amazon both had decent prices. Also free printable 3mm and 4mm grid paper with light lines exists. It just depends on if you have the time to print cut and draw out the spreads. That's how I test if layouts will work for me before shelling out my money on more expensive planners. Honestly considering printing my own and starting the drawing out process now to avoid stress in the end. Worst issue then is binding it selections because rings, discs, and click spines are all good options. And that's because I am too cheap to pay to have in bound for me.

If it helps, binding imitation Field Notes style notebooks (or a half-letter sized notebook to prevent the hassle of measuring and paper-cutting) has been easy and somewhat budget friendly in my experience. The only real major expenses would be cardstock paper and/or a box-cutter, but otherwise it's pretty easy to fold paper and the cardstock cover in half and staple the spine (a great budget friendly way is to place an eraser underneath where you want stapled, and then after removing the eraser off the staple wire ends then the ends can be folded down with a pencil or pen). It's also easy to use a ruler and box-cutter to make the pages look neat/uniform (there's also a lot of great tutorials online and on TH-cam - like Artzi Crafts is a great channel that shows some easy tutorials).
I ordered from Yoseka just after their launch party. Even if they stateside retailers increase the prices, they were still in line with each other. Last year I ordered a sterling ink in January and was planning on it by the end of the month.
I was just so surprised at the website crashing! Like, are you not aware that your products are popular? Especially after posting teasers for a month 🤨 I'm quite disappointed in how they handled it. Anyway, I loved this video 🥰
Separate comment -- I worked with IP and Licensing lawyers and happen to know this. So unfortunately, Hobonichi CAN set the price and terms by which you can sell as a merchant. Seller/Stores are merchants and sign merchants agreements before Hobo even takes their order. These agreements dictate the terms under which you can sell Hobonichi's product's and use it's marks and trade dress. It sets terms for delivery and reorder. Hopefully these agreements benefit both parties, but some brand owners absolutely exploit their popularity. Hobonichi can say you have to sell for x amount (usually percentage margins) and can exempt their items from sales so as to protect the value of their mark.
I always buy hobonichi for the experience, but it's not the same. The paper no longer feels like indestructible Bible paper, the shopping experience isn't nearly as enjoyable as it was with holds. the box no longer comes in a fancy paper wrapper. I'm not going to mourn it because I got what I wanted this year. I am just going to assess whether I can ever enjoy an unboxing as much as I did this one last night. Before the price hike today, it was strong maybe. After the price hike today, no, I can buy a weeks buy itself or a blank book with great paper and make my own layouts again. It's too dear for what I receive.
Thank for the video! Our little group order with 3 people was able to grab everything but the Weeks : Into the Purple Night. So we are pretty happy with that result. It was hectic for our group buyer, for sure.
I love the Hobonichi planners (I have used and enjoy using each kind for different purposes) but this year has really soured me on Hobonichi. This was the biggest online retail disaster I have seen in a while. It is not 2005 anymore, plenty of companies have big time releases. The failure of the website, the cancelled orders, the inaccurate "out of stock" badges and now PRICE INCREASES??? people should be getting BIGGER discounts for putting up with this headache. I don't think I am going to stop using hobonichi (I just am too dependent on them lol) but I am very disappointed in this
The launch was at 4am (Swedish time) and I stayed up all night. Managed so get through checkout at 9.20am😅 I was able to get everything I wanted. I didn't have this issue at all last year, This year, because if the new Hobonichi ID,, I was worried I'd done something wrong so I tried 3 different web readers and a bunch of different devices, No luck. It wasn't until I went onto one of the Facebook groups I belong to that I found out everyone had the same problem. A stressful night but I'm happy I got what I wanted in the end.
What a nightmare and I am so sorry for everyone who was frustrated by it 😢 I placed my order through a local store because mine will be a small haul anyway. I would have been very upset if I was there waiting for the launch 😞
Just so much this year regarding hobonichi - it’s unfortunate… but stuff happens. Paddington restocked a few days later but sold out again. It’s just sad also there are scalpers doing it to resell on eBay at exorbitant prices…
Whaaat? Hobonichi "banning" discount codes is kinda crazy. I wonder if my local reseller has this rule too or since we're a smaller country Hobonichi won't notice... But it's not fair at all. The price increase is also crazy, for my country it's around 30-40%. I love the planners but all of this is leaving a bit of a sour note. It's honestly now better to use a Japanese proxy to buy since the yen is so weak.
After about an hour of trying on the hobonichi site, I ended up buying from Anderson Pens. But I feel like I spent a lot more money than I would have buying from them directly, even with the shipping costs... I also saw that a lot of things were back in stock the next day :( I really liked the notebook freebies too, so I'm a bit disappointed. At least I was able to get the purple Kusano weeks, so I am grateful for that since it seems sold out everywhere. I wonder if the site crashed due to bots from resellers? there are quite a few things I purchased in the past couple years that had the same problem. Bots were able to purchase the items so quickly to resell on ebay, hardly any real customers were able to get any items.

I purchased once finally around 1 AM after things were out of stock, went back next morning to be nosey and some things were in then back stock and am not happy to pay shipping twice. I wrote them and they wouldn't refund the extra shipping cost. Kinda bummed bc I paid $25 twice.
Got most of what I wanted but cost a lot more since I ordered some from yoseka and the rest from hobonichi. I did get the Paddington cover the next day, as you mentioned. Not sure how much hobonichi I’ll be buying next year. This whole thing has me assessing what I actually need and use and whether I can get the same thing done with alternate products. Time will tell.
Companies that are official resellers for a brand have to follow the brand's reseller guidelines, but you're right, it doesn't make a lot of sense Atlas couldn't let you use their own store discounts. I personally think most of the special Hobonichi stuff is fugly and wasn't upset that I couldn't order any of the covers. And $178 for the nylon POTR A6 cover? Are you kidding me?
It was my first time ordering I kept having problems so I gave up after a few minutes and ordered a week later when I thought the paddington bear was restocked but then it sold out in 3 min. I accepted I wasn’t going to get it but placed my order for the weeks n cousin. Glad to hear this isn’t the norm. But do they sell out that quick? I had never really wanted a cover so I had not expected this.🙋🏻♀️
Certain exclusive and limited planners do sell out quickly. But you can usually find them on Etsy or EBay a few days later, marked at a higher price unfortunately.

I had everything waiting in my cart and kept trying periodically from a couple hours after the launch started. I noticed things said out of stock but on a different modality (cell phone app vs computer) things were still in stock, so--I got distracted organizing things (I'm ADHD, this is normal) and came back to it after midnight my time--and much to my surprise, it all went through. Even though I had to spend a lot of time dithering on payment sites with unanticipated problems because I moved recently and forgot to switch over a few things. It said it had timed out, but if I had an email the sale had gone through and not to repeat it. And I have two emails saying it worked. Considering how upset I was when I logged in for the first time and it said the things I wanted were out of stock, pretty much across the board, I woke up the next morning just totally chuffed that I had succeeded.
I saw an update on their IG that they are waiting for their shipment from Hobonichi. They should receive some of their shipment on September 9th. My order from Atlas is already here! I just came home and saw it. 😃
Originally Atlas told it's affiliates that their discount codes would work on the Hobonichi 2025 products. But after the launch began, about 2-3 hours later, Atlas and other retailers were told by the Hobonichi company to pause the discounts until further notice. I'm glad that you were able to use it!

They really did make a big price jump today. Yesterday, the cousin was 34.00 and today it is 39.00. The Tragen Weeks was 46.00 and now it is 52.00.

I tried for several hours to order direct from Hobonichi to no avail. I ended up going to Jetpens. But it was more expensive without the freebies.
