It is the symbol of “Om”, which is a mystic and sacred syllable in the teachings of Hinduism. And she had just converted to Hinduism and was doing an learning Yoga at that time also.
Talking about the actual producing aspect: the union of *Madonna, William Orbit* and *Patrick Leonard* resulted in making such masterpiece, that summoned their new revamped musical form. It was like a channeling which ended up with their 'transformation'. Honestly, I'm not surprised, this album is considered the "opus magnum". "Ray of Light made me, and I didn’t know what I was doing": - *William Orbit* on Madonna, being sectioned and resurrection.
Chris Cunningham directed the video ! . He wanted to take all the CGI out and just film Madonna in the desert. Madonna insisted to keep them. He said he would never work with a superstar ever again.
The effects on this were very good indeed. But Bedtime Story, from 1994, was even better in terms of the effects on it. I HIGHLY recommend Bedtime Story by Madonna, it is still probably her best video ever, it is a work of art.
