Around that time I thought Madonna has done everything whst else would she come up with and she heading towards her late 30s... Well, she was just getting started in 1998! That was 16 years into her never ending success. Her Ray of Light album is a masterpiece.
I wouldn’t consider it a complete departure. It seems like a continuation of the song Bedtime Stories both sonically and lyrically from the the previous Album of the same title.

She said she didn’t want to be cold and miserable filming this video, so she didn’t want to film in snow. She felt a desert also represents being frozen and desolate because there’s no vegetation. The irony is though that the desert they filmed in was extremely cold at night and most everyone got sick.
