    This time, I bring you guys a bit of a different video. I want to keep the same speedrun explanation formula, but I felt like this had to be put out there, since many of the myths discussed in the video are still very widespread. There's gonna be another similar video in the future, and then you can expect me to break down many more world record speedruns!

      @Emile Bernat It ties into "speedrunning is too hard to get into". Maybe I should have put more emphasis on the money aspect, because I see this being thrown around in so many "how to get started with speedrunning" tutorials.

      In the future could you maybe do some voice tests? I can hear the saliva in your mouth and it's SUPER uncomfortable.
      Also as perhaps a future topic, could you perhaps talk about toxicity in speedrunning and what can be done to combat it? I mean I've never seen such transphobia outside of actual hate groups and it's astounding how gross things get, especially when you mention Narcissa. I've seen people accusing her of faking being trans, which is a super serious allegation though it does happen, but they never have any evidence to support their claim at all and seem to be using that extreme minority as some sort of shield to get away with saying whatever they want about her.

      As a speedrunner, i can say that some skips can be 100-300 times harder than doing the level dev intended. Therefore, i have put tons of practice into the trick trying to get it to work consistently, especially for inconsistent tricks. I therefore would consider tricks to skip levels, even harder ones, actually the hardest way to beat a game considering that you need immense practice and skill to do it. People who say “that’s cheating” are therefore totally wrong

    Myth #11 Tool-Assisted Speedruns (TASes) are cheating/pointless/impossible to beat.
    TASes are essentially the culmination of all currently known tricks and glitches for a game, and thus serve as a theoretical "best". New discoveries can invalidate this at any time, and thus they aren't TRULY "impossible". They aren't meant to count as much as actual speedruns, but instead serve as a visual guide FOR actual speedruns to emulate. Even "TAS-only tricks" have a use, as later findings can reveal methods for them that are humanly possible sometimes.

    • @Bismuth9

      The reason I don't mention TASes is because I have a video dedicated to them coming up.

    • @Shadow_Witch
      @Shadow_Witch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      People that say that TASes are cheating usually don't realize that TASing and Speedrunning are almost completely different things.
      Speedrunning could be compared to photographing, you gotta take the shot at the right time, when the camera has in focus what you want to capture in your photo, and you need to have enough practice to take the right angle.
      TASing on the other hand could be compairing to drawing, you can take how long you want, use any methods you thing is more suitable to you, the important thing is that the final product looks nice.

      @snbeast9545 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    so i wanna tell my own story :
    i've been a fan of speedrunning for a long time but never thought of making my own, i was just not that good at any game and i get burnt out pretty quickly... until the day getting over it came out. i played that game like a basement dweller, playing it while watching videos, while eating, playing it all day. kind of like a fidget spinner, just something to get my hand moving... after about 200+ wins i realized that i was getting REALLY QUICK at beating the game.. without even trying to beat it quickly. so i decided to record a speedrun. my time was around 5 minutes. i didn't care to compete for 1# i just wanted to keep it archived on the website so i can look back at it in the future. right now i have about 400~ wins on the game but i don't play it much anymore. if i get into another game like getting over it that doesn't burn me out quickly i might speedrun it too. long story short speedrunning is hard to get into if you don't know what you're doing. you're not supposed to pick some random game and grind yourself at it for days unitl you're quick. you have to play a game that you already know and enjoy so you can grind yourself at it without feeling burnt out or bored.

    I love this video, and part of that reason is how it basically applies to anything.
    Myth: This thing I don't understand is really simple and easy. Fact: It looks really simple and easy because you don't understand it.
    Myth: I would be really bad at this thing I know nothing about and have never practiced. Fact: You are always bad at things you know nothing about and need to practice to move from that default state.
    Myth: This group of people are doing something that is pointless and contributes nothing to the world. Fact: The literal meaning of life is whatever you're doing that prevents you from killing yourself.

      Its best to save the best for last due to a psychological effect known as the 'recency effect' where the last item in a list is better remembered then the rest. There is also a similar effect for the first item too. Therefore the most important being last is the optimal way to make a list of any sort.

    The "that time could be used to curing cancer" thing and similar seem hypocrite; the exact same thing could be said about their time used to make those stupid comments... Those people really didn't read what they said and thought they're some kind of smarts? I don't know, but I'm starting to dislike the world even more than I did a few years ago. I'm not even speedrunner, but seeing that so many people can be so stupid... it doesn't make me feel good.
    Also, categories exist, so if you don't like glitching the game out, go into Glitchless instead. If you don't like skipping content, there's No Skips. Sometimes there's choice, but you're just making it difficult on yourself by not trying (^^;;;
    You don't need to have the best time ever or even world record to be a speedrunner, you can choose to beat it in the least amount of time you can, then beat that time next time. You don't have to compete, just have fun ^^

      I have seen some extremely stupid people in youtube comments arguing that glitches are cheating. They’re not, glitches are just cases of developer laziness/oversights that speedrunners make use out of. You can treat the game’s code as a rulebook and the game as a referee. If an action isn’t allowed in the rulebook it won’t happen. Glitches just use mechanics allowed in the rulebook to get a result making the speedrun faster. The game checks the code and says “Well, nothing here explicitly forbids this” and yes games are that lax. Saying that glitches are cheating is therefore fundamentally wrong.

    • @charliep7112

      "I was thinking about why so many in the radical left participate in "speedrunning" The reason is the left's lack of work ethic ('go fast' rather than 'do it right') and, in a Petersonian sense, to elevate alternative sexual archetypes in the marketplace ('fastest mario') Obviously, there are exceptions to this and some people more in the center or right also "speedrun". However, they more than sufficient to prove the rule, rather than contrast it. Consider how woke GDQ has been, almost since the very beginning. Your eyes will start to open. Returning to the topic of the work ethic... A "speedrunner" may well spend hours a day at their craft, but this is ultimately a meaningless exercise, since they will ultimately accomplish exactly that which is done in less collective time by a casual player. This is thus a waste of effort on the behalf of the "speedrunner". Put more simply, they are spending their work effort on something that someone else has already done (and done in a way deemed 'correct' by the creator of the artwork). Why do they do this? The answer is quite obvious if you think about it. The goal is the illusion of speed and the desire (SUBCONSCIOUS) to promote radical leftist, borderline Communist ideals of how easy work is. Everyone always says that "speedruns" look easy. That is part of the aesthetic. Think about the phrase "fully automated luxury Communism" in the context of "speedrunning" and I strongly suspect that things will start to 'click' in your mind. What happens to the individual in this? Individual accomplishment in "speedrunning" is simply waiting for another person to steal your techniques in order to defeat you. Where is something like "intellectual property" or "patent" in this necessarily communitarian process? Now, as to the sexual archetype model and 'speedrunning' generally... If you have any passing familiarity with Jordan Peterson's broader oeuvre and of Jungian psychology, you likely already know where I am going with this. However, I will say more for the uninitiated. Keep this passage from Maps of Meaning (91) in mind: "The Archetypal Son... continually reconstructs defined territory, as a consequence of the 'assimilation' of the unknown [as a consequence of 'incestuous' (that is, 'sexual' - read creative) union with the Great Mother]" In other words, there is a connection between 'sexuality' and creativity that we see throughout time (as Peterson points out with Tiamat and other examples). In the sexual marketplace, which archetypes are simultaneously deemed the most creative and valued the highest? The answer is obviously entrepreneurs like Elon Musk and others. Given that we evolved and each thing we do must have an evolutionary purpose (OR CAUSE), what archetype is the 'speedrunner' engaged in, who is accomplishing nothing new? They are aiming to make a new sexual archetype, based upon 'speed' rather than 'doing things right' and refuse ownership of what few innovations they can provide to their own scene, denying creativity within their very own sexual archetype. This is necessarily leftist. The obvious protest to this would be the 'glitchless 100% run', which in many ways does aim to play the game 'as intended' but seems to simply add the element of 'speed' to the equation. This objection is ultimately meaningless when one considers how long a game is intended to be played, in net, by the creators, even when under '100%' conditions. There is still time and effort wasted for no reason other than the ones I proposed above. By now, I am sure that I have bothered a number of you and rustled quite a few of your feathers. I am not saying that 'speedrunning' is bad, but rather that, thinking about the topic philosophically, there are dangerous elements within it."

    actually i only do stuff with most of the glitches,unless it makes the game completely unfun(such as mule duping(fixed) in minecraft or KAL overclocking in ksp)
    also if a game is actually running on a client and a server even when in singleplayer mode,modifications to the client are still glitches as long as the server is happy with them :)
    also i dont think that rta-specific stuff(mainly consistency and reaction time) are interesting at all.i only do the chair zip with cheat engine slowing the game to 0.4x speed because otherwise it would be quite hard to pull off consistently.

  • @0ZeldaFreak
    @0ZeldaFreak 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I changed my opinion on speedrunning after done speedruns myself. Before I thought it's a waste of time to practice a game endless and doing a long run and you need to aim for World record. My opinion changed a bit. Sure some games take longer for a single run and still I won't do such runs. There are a lot of games and every game can be runned. You can pick categories and games based on what you like and how you like it. Games that offer long and short runs have a great benefit. You can train skills in shorter runs. Longer runs, especially 100% runs require less skill on tricks. Longer runs also have the benefit that there is room for error on the way to wr. With a run that takes 30 minutes, you only need to focus these 30 minutes. A run that takes 8 hours is way harder. You can't just reset the game midway through, because you don't have the time for it. Sure such runs still require a lot of skill.
    I run super Mario 64 with 16 stars, because it's beginner friendly and offers a good run time. I tried different categories, especially the special ones and it makes fun. Now I don't run games, because I want to play new games. Speedrunning offers you a challange on games that you have. There are people that played skyrim 10 times or so. Such people found replay value to a game. With speedrunning you can add replay value to games that you already have.
    When you don't have something to play, try speedrunning. This adds replay value to a game and it's a challange. You must relearn the game and after that, you see the game with different eyes. There are games or runs with less tricks needed or the tricks are very basic, like walking the fastest way. As I said super Mario 64 is a great choice. 0/1 stars require hard tricks. There are 3 major tricks and the first 2 are hard. 16 stars is a bit longer and requires only the last trick of the 0/1 star run and that easy. There are still more tricks to do but you can choose your route. There is a wr route and that's the fastest way to do it. These tricks can be hard but with a slower route, you have easier tricks. This won't give you wr but still a fast route. 70 and 120 stars are more about an efficient way to collect everything. These still require some tricks for some stars but avoiding these, might give you a slower time but you still can get a good time. On longer runs, they loose a lot of time, compared to a tas run. A tas run just shows what's the fastest way ever possible to a machine, without cheating. Some tricks are too hard to do in a rta and doing it slower but easier to do, is better for longer runs. You know you can do this 99% of the time, instead being able to do it 30% of the time and loosing time, when failing. A shorter run can does harder tricks, because you can faster reset the game and you don't need too long to get to the point.
    Speedrunning makes fun. When you have nothing to do, try it.

  • @J_Halcyon

    On #7 you talk about glitches and cheats. There's a third important category to remember as well: Exploits. An exploit is a use of intended game mechanics to do things not intended by the developers. Many sequence breaks use mechanics that the developers put into the game intentionally to do things that the developers never anticipated players would do - timed level-ups, precise movement to hit that one tiny patch of jumpable terrain, damage boosting, etc.

    Speed run is 2 words
    NO.
    That's possibly the only one I never thought of prior to watching this video.
    The others have come up in arguments with a friend of mine at some point.

    myth: TAS speedruns don't require effort or talent
    Fact: TAS requires a different skillset than standard speedruns and the skills don't overlap. TAS is about seeing the theoretical limits of a game and is more about mathematics than playing ability. They are also fun to watch for different reasons. They SHOULD be properly labeled, but once they are, people should shut the fuck up about it and watch a normal speedrun if they don't like them.

      That, and there's more than a few overlaps between both anyway.

      So true! As long as they aren't trying to deceive people into thinking it's a legit fully human speedrun, then there's no problems, I mean playing an instrument is basically tool assisted singing, but that's why it's it's own form of art, a guitarist might have a voice that's reminiscent of kittens in a blender set to liquify, but if he can play the guitar like a legend then he's still talented, it's just a different skill set.

    I've found that most people who criticize someone hobby as being a waste of time almost always have things they spend a lot of time and money on that I consider a complete waste. But I would not actually tell them that because it is their time and their money, it's their life and how they spend it is their choice. The fact is life is basically one big waste of time, the best thing you can do is spend that time doing things you enjoy, with people you like. Most people don't ever do anything that changes the world, so that argument is pretty moot. Not to mention, an epic speed run can change the world. As we have seen with the charity drives that are based around speed runs. If not for all the people "wasting" their time, these would never have happened.

    I like how you showed a picture of darkviperAU to show the difference between someone like him who only plays video games all day for a small audience with no job and then pictures of speed runners who only play a minimal amount of time because of work and social lives

    "Speedrunners appreciate the game they play more than anyone else."
    I think that's reductive. Playing a game a lot and understanding its mechanical quirks is absolutely something people can deeply appreciate, but it's not a marker for how much they appreciate a game. A game can be deeply appreciated by people from playing it just once. They can appreciate drastically different things. Like me, I love combat systems and enjoy understanding them to an extent most people who play those games probably don't. Some people appreciate the lore, characters, and themes of a game. They might study it and try to decipher meaning from it. Speedrunners no doubt appreciate the games they play, but to say they do so more than anyone else is disregarding all of the other ways games can be and are appreciated.

      Yes and no. Generally speaking, the quirks and mechanics is absolutely not where the understanding of a speedrunner ends. The lore, themes, characters, music (I'll say this one again: music!), the artistry of a game, speedrunners know and love them inside out. Absolutely inside out. There is almost no easter egg, no hidden feature, no piece of little known fact about the game that you'll tell to a speedrunner and they'll go: "Oh! I didn't know that." Again, generally speaking, of course. Yes, there's also speedrunning for the sake of speedrunning, and people who pick up a game, play through it once and immediately start running. In fact, it's a lot more prevalent today than it was when this video was posted. But as a general rule of thumb, if you take a speedrunner and 50 other people who have experienced a game, the person who will have spent the most time learning about it in every way possible, and the most time playing it, will be the speedrunner, 9 times out of 10.

    most of these seem like they come from people who either dont understand speedrunning in general or dont understand/cant appreciate how hard the tricks and glitches actually are to pull off

    While i agree about Speedrun being one word, it's a habit that's REALLY hard for me to kick. My first exposure to speedruns was on a show called Cinematech on G4, they would routinely play trailers and gameplay demos of games. One episode they decided to start showing "speed runs" in the bottom corner during the whole episode (Legend of Zelda and Mario 64 16 Star), and they would title it as "speed run." So that is stuck in my head and I have to keep fighting it.

    I thought speedrunning was too difficult for me, then I tried with Resident Evil 3 (emulated,NTSC-U,Hard mode, Any%) and I got 1h 44' 24", nothing spectacular but for being my very first attempt at a speedrun I was really pleased.
    So, yeah, try giving it a shot first who knows...
    EDIT: now it's 1h 35' 41"

    I spend time considering the value of speed running. But I've never antagonized the sport. I think of it as an existential dilemma, such as: why do we play games so much? why do we dedicate time to accomplishing something for which nothing can be shown for? what is a game really outside of the fundamental principles of design? I ask these questions because I am a young game developer. I feel obligated not to waste a player's time, as I am against drawn out narrations, exposition, etc. And believe that the controller is the most immersive part: in fact, I feel that speedrunners are a great example of my speculation, for if by speedrunning, and thus becoming intimate with the controller, that they solve the redundancy of casual play: then control, and especially locomotion, must be the sequitur of immersion.
    I enjoy learning about speedrunners; and I hope my games will one day lend themselves to the community. I actually believe that certain features, such as randomizers and clocks, aught to be a standard for future games: as they provide a simple addition to the game from which far more interest can occur. But if I make games, I want to do so with these questions in mind, so that I can ensure that something profound is taking place.
    Edit: also, I can't stand it when people say glitching is boring. When I make games, if I hear about any found glitches (that aren't game breaking) I'm leaving them it.
