The Tree That Will Leave You Blind

- Sheltering from the rain under a tree in the middle of the night, a man learned that getting wet was the least of his problems, now faced with going blind. One of the world’s most dangerous organisms, unexpectedly a tree, is extremely toxic. The fruit is poison, the sap is extremely dangerous, and touching it is the last mistake you could ever make. Let’s get into it.

Dont eat random fruits.

Some plants dont want to be eaten, and they can kind of get what they want

You'd think a radiologist would be smart enough not to eat a random fruit they found lying on a beach, but I guess not...
Surely fight or flight
It’s an old people thing. So many older people will eat and taste random things they find on the ground, even pesticides.
And experienced symptoms very similar to anaphylactic shock yet chose to treat it with piña coladas instead of seeking immediate medical treatment. 🫤

@@dingdud6602 But parents literally teach their kids not to eat random stuff they don't know. So they're just getting dumber with age?
This tree is endangered AND endangering
In my opinion it's a threat to humans and therefore has to be eradicated.

Yeah really.

Then proceed to poop out their lives

No wonder people in the ancient world have all kinds of terrifying lore. The world they lived in had threes like these and they had no way to explain the circumstances, other than will of a deity or some cursed spirit.
It still exists
it worked thou, that tree is cursed, don't go near it.
those people are dangerous, have prejudice against them.
yadda yadda
My friend was talking about this one time and it made so much sense
And of course ancient people would have seen people who touched the bark or burned it, etc. and be like "Hey we could use that against our foes!"
Back then, people still had great respect for nature.
1.) Don't touch it
2.) Don't let the sap get on you
3.) Don't eat the apples from it

I applaud the medicinal use of pina coladas.
I'm surprised it isn't in Australia. No wonder Florida Man has so much power.
Florida is just America’s mini Australia
I thought it would be Southeast Asian or Indian
Oh, don't worry, Australia has its own deadly tree. It's called the gympie-gympie, and it's just as bad.

Isn't that just mostly painful because it leaves its sharp spines inside your skin for months and therefore will constantly set off your pain receptors while beyond that it isn't actually deadly (but will make you wish it was?)

I live in Florida. When they take people on airboat tours they warn about that tree and its fruit.
The lorax really said: "DON'T TOUCH MY FAVOURITE TREE!"
I usually listen to this type of video like they're podcasts, but's really nice to see Brew animated in this one.
I remember when Thoughty2 covered this a few years back. This tree is basically Earth's fury and hatred in a tree. Seriously a messed up tree.
Fun fact, they are related to Poinsettias which are also poisonous. In fact just about every member of the Euphorbia family is toxic.
Who on earth finds a random fruit on the beach and is like "oh let me take a bite". 😒
people with not a shred of awareness of self preservation. so highly educated liberal women place fairly high on that ranking.

Actually a lot of the fruits in the West Indies are harmless, we often eat fruits off random trees.

What's scary is from the picture it looks similar to a weeping willow, which is probably the gentlest tree you can find, so it's not like a lot of plants which looks extremely toxic.
I ate the apple of death in Nayarit México and by a miracle I survived.
I asked an old man sitting outside of his heart if these little apples were okay to eat he said "si" but immediately after I swallowed one my stomach burned and I was throwing up. Luckily there was a doctor that gave me a pill after I told him what I ate. I spent most of the day throwing up. But thank God I didn't I
“Luckily this tree will probably be on the other side of the earth”
…
“Well, I’m frightened.”
It is technically possible to burn the tree's wood - but it's not really worth the effort. It takes draining the wood of its sap for months.
The Lorax hath blinded thee!!
I swore not to watch ur videos until Brew came back and I am now happy because this means I get to watch your videos
After a few of these, maybe pepper the ones you missed into the rotation, maybe 1 for 1.
You're not supposed to shelter under a tree anyways during a storm because of a thing called lightning. Plus hiding under a tree isn't really going to keep you dry. It can provide some protection from the wind, but that opens the door for another threat. By that, I mean getting crushed by the falling tree.
"Forgive the jest if I say that it is the only tree that can carve its initials in you."
~ quote about the manchineel from _Wind Across the Everglades_ (1958)
Manchineel tree?
Edit: CALLED IT! My science nerdery pays off!
If I'd eaten one and it caused that much pain I'd go to the hospital to get it tree-ted.
This tree evolved to survive against humans
Ironically, evolving to survive against humans, is exactly how a tree ends up becoming annihilated by humans entirely.
If they were to encourage humans to handle them, then like other fruit trees, humans would pamper them and spread them in volume across the lands.
Ngl I'm a Floridian and I've never heard of this tree
Ikr & me neither
Florida has some pretty interesting native flora, like we even have things like native cinnamon and mahogany on top of things like sea grape, hog plum, and pond apple.
If most of Florida wasn't artificially drained marshland and/or bland suburban developments, we could have some pretty interesting and useful garden forests or orchards kinda like how the ancient Mayans had with lots of useful plants grown around their villages like Breadnut and spinach tree.
Yeah same
Haven't been here for a while and am totally happy to see Brew and his crew again ^^
This reminds me of that one episode of original star trek with planet where the trees and even grass caused acid burns just touching it.
Nice to see you back Brew
00:01 that’s how I run in dreams.
I never thought a tree could give you cancer
Love these videos!!!! They tickle my brain lol
Watching the beginning of this video, I was literally saying “MANCHINEEL? MANCHINEEL? MANCHINEEL?” after every single word he said. Manchineel trees are my favorite trees of all time. I just think it’s cool, might seem kind of weird considering how dangerous it is.

Wow…a literal Poison Tree…
Interesting video. I wonder if the voynich manuscript contains details on this tree.
what a nice tree

It makes poison ivy a saint (but itchy) by a comparison.

"A tree that will leave you blind if you look at it"
Impossible.
"You run under a tree-"
Oh yeah thats possible
I've lived in SWFL my whole life and I've never heard of this danger tree.
I'm pretty sure it's in the Everglades and Keys, although manchineel is endangered in its Florida range. Elsewhere in the Caribbean and Central America, manchineel is a "least concern" species.
The Calusa of SWFL likely had access to manchineel back in the day, as it is highly suspected (although not completely verified) that Juan Ponce de León died from an arrow poisoned with manchineel sap. I'm pretty sure I read that this confrontation took place around Charlotte Harbor, though I'm relatively sure manchineel doesn't grow that far north anymore.

Ayo why couldn’t you hold your laugh when you mentioned Leon’s name?? 😂😂👏
The introvert of all trees lol
Can't you put the name of the tree in the description?
I got the same reaction from eating an unripe persimmon. I had a minor panic attack thinking I had just poisoned myself.
It kind of reminds me of the oleander tree, everything about it is dangerous.
That tree really doesn't like anyone.
How was I born and raised in SWFL and never taught about this tree?!? We used to fish by the mangroves.
I love the short videos. I can watch it during my break at work
Funny thing the place where I am is currently having a downpour 😂
I'll never understand why people on vacation in foreign lands decide to just up and eat foreign things they aren't familiar with without having a local there confirming if it's safe or not... Or to swim, alone, on some strange beach, again, with no local being there to tell them if there are Jellyfish or conesnails or something.
This was a story in my English star test lol.
I stop my adventurous eating things outside at crabapples beyond that it will never enter my mouth 😂
Just call it Central America 😅 0:33

I always found this tree fascinating especially given that is common place, though well-labelled, here in Trinidad and Tobago.
Also, Tobago is pronounced to-bay-go. =)
Aye I was wondering if I'd find another Trinbagonian on here! I remember the tourists that got sick after eating the manchineel few years ago. Was gonna say that we have signs up on the trees stating that they're poisonous, do not eat

It isn't endangered anywhere else.

Also you can't burn the trees either, they'll release noxious fumes into the air that is also deadly
