I was auditioning the DT880 600ohm at a headphone store today, they're right at the limit of what the E17 can drive well. With the E09k (also at the store), they're pretty great.
Really enjoyed your video and full detailed review, as well as the explanation, of impedance levels in general and with regards to the DT 880's. You've explained everything so well in your written review that I finally understand the concept of impedance and ohms now. While I had some knowledge b4, it wasn't totally clear so thanks!
may not be quiet enough for silent library unless you turn it way down (as you should - you're in a library lol) . wearing these without music you can hear everything, just muffled. so they contain very little sound (in or out). but that is the design; they are super super comfortable and sound very neutral and accurate
I ended up getting the DT770 Pro 250ohm for use at school and I'm saving up for something like the Audeze LCD2 or Senn HD800 to use at home. Excited for that!
2011, iPod touch... wowsers. I'm glad things have gotten a bit better these days. Portable devices and phones these days can very easily handle the 32 Ohm version. Generally anything up to about 50 Ohms or so, apparently.
Exactly. I love to listen to my DT880 Edition 32 ohm on my notebook WITHOUT any dac/amp stuff and it sounds amazing (mostly classical music and film music)! There is nothing wrong with 32 ohm, really nothing. Even his high praised Focal Clear has an impeadence of only 55 ohm and that wasn´t a problem for him.
He doesn't like Beyerdynamic...these cans are amazing for checking mixdowns in the studio. Specifically, the 250ohm version. The 600ohm is for listening to these at home on a high powered tube amp while the 250ohm are for studio mixing and mastering. The 32ohm versions are just an option for everyone else.
Hi! Thanks for all your informative videos. I am thinking about getting the DT880 600 ohm version. Would the headphone amp (600 ohm) on a Soundblaster ZxR soundcard be able to drive them?
I know Im late to this reply, but this combination is exactly what I have. The dt880 600 ohm and a Soundblaster ZxR. Yes, the card will drive the headphones with a considerably loud volume. Not a crazy volume, but it just hits a very usable volume when max out. I find it falls short the moment you want to pump it up to a crazy boost like when you feel like you want that kind of power every now and then. For moderate listening it's ok, but for sure you'll need a dedicated amp if you want to push the cans to their potential
Hi and thanks a lot indeed for the very valuable review. In particular i have a question about the mentioned "damping factor" The higher the better ? i tend to think so because this should allow for a better control of the driver diaphragm movement. Can i go on with this belief ? Thanks a lot again. Kind regards, gino
InnerFidelity guy hates bright phones so don't ask him :) or you will end up with dead sounding AKG K701 or pink candy sound of Sennheiser HD650. DT 770 Pro are amazing headphones. The 80 ohm version has a lot of bass and rolled off highs, nice to use on the go with any portable amp or straight from laptop/stereo. 250 ohm version has highs to balance the bass and more refined sound to listen at home or with strong CMOY on the go. DT770 have more soundstage than Shure and are more comfortable.
I have a pair of AKG - 702's I use them on a (cheaper) home AV receiver but they sound really good, the bass is just ever so slightly light for me but is incredibly tight, the midrange has good depth to it aside maybe from the upper end in female vocals (I'm not sure if it's my compression or the actual recording, I use lossless FLAC and vorbis for portable) but they are slightly harsh. As for the treble; Wow. I love how crystal clear the sound of cymbals and high hats are with these cans. $312.
There's a problem with Shure headphones. Some months ago I bought a pair of Shure SRH440 headphones. However, recently I found that during studio monitoring, whist singing, my jaw movement was causing the plastic hinges to creak a little, enough to be picked up by the microphone. Unfortunately the SRH840 has the same hinge design. Shure promote these as studio headphones but their plastic design is a big fail that makes them unsuitable for this purpose.
Great review/info! But Tyll, which Beyer headphone would you then recommend for portable use? Personally I'm not a fan of the smaller ones like the P51 or the 1450. I much prefer the bigger and more open sound stages of the bigger Beyer headphones. (I have a pair of DT770 32 Ohm edition at the moment.)
Hi Tyll, I am going to purchase a beyerdynamic product soon and I was wondering which phone, out of the dt770, dt880, dt990, and the pro versions of all three headphones. I am looking for a headphone that I could use for portable use but also at home high quality listening. Great Vid, keep it up!
@t3hsniper Actually, it's the low impedance cans that draw more current and if inefficient will lower battery life. Really it's more complicated than I can post in this little box, but 250 Ohm will be fine, though it's possible it won't be loud enough for you.
@DJHiso The Sennheiser HD 650 --- but it's a bit soft sounding so you might mix in too much highs if you're not careful. The Denon AH-D2000 --- but it's too bright, so you might mix soft. Sennheiser Amperior is pretty neutral; it might be uncomfortable for long sessions, but it's got the best isolation of all above.
Wouldn't the 250 ohm be a bit high for a pmp? By that I mean wouldn't you need to increase the volume by a fair amount to be able to drive it well enough? Therefore using the battery up faster. Nice video by the way. I had to use it to explain to someone who had impedance completely backwards, who claimed another reviewer was the one who had it backwards.
Seeing as these are "semi-open" how much sound escapes while listening at moderate levels? I'm wondering if they would be quiet enough for listening to in the silent areas of my university library.
