    Really enjoy hearing what you think about the sound of the phones. You might include whether they are less or more detailed in the mids/highs. You could possibly include what the specifications are that come with the phone (which for the most part are kind of meaningless below 25 Hz or above 15kHz simply because most instruments have little output beyond those ranges). You could tell the type of music you used in the review and what stood out as good or bad...nice brush sound on cymbals or bad bass guitar..whatever. Overall you are quite enjoyable to watch and I like your reviews. Thank you for putting in all the effort you do~ it is much appreciated.

    I definitely prefer having the full review in video format. I already read lots of audio stuff -- Stereophile, The Absolute Sound, Tone Audio, etc. -- and written reviews are all over the web. But there are relatively few people making thoughtful and honest video reviews of audio products. I really enjoy your videos because you actually know what you're talking about and your descriptions of build quality, comfort, and sound are more thorough than most.

    I've been using the DT990 pro for months now and I love them! My brain has gotten used to the energetic treble and I'm not bothered by it anymore. Super comfy and super detailed :)

      @thiscorrosion900 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Buy some Linsoul ZS10 IEMs and you'll forget all about this nonsense. And the treble is spectacular, sparkling, clear, and NOT tinny or shouty or metallic.

    Absolutely do written if you want to go more into detail (which in terms of video time could be 'too long' for some people for all I know), but definitely do NOT stop making video reviews and comparisons! They are for the more 'average Joe' like me and I enjoy yours a lot. They show enthusiasm and you usually hit all the check marks for what to goes in pros and cons and then some, like explaining terms the more audiophiles already are deeply into. So keep 'em coming Lachlan! :D

    Nice review as ever. I'd agree that the DT880s, even the 32 Ohm versions really need a separate amp to drive them, your average smartphone or tablet does not have sufficient power to generate adequate volumes, they are after all below 100dB / mW sensitivity! Beyer do a rather nice battery powered DAC/amp, the A200p which is about as low as you'd want to go, given the price and potential performance of the 880s. There are other options from Fiio and others such as the HiFiM8 depending on how important size / power / ££ is to you.

    Please keep your vids the way they are. I like the whole video to contain your thoughts and opinions. Too many people have videos of their unboxing then leave out their impressions of the headphone or their mini review. Your channel is unique in that everything you cover, covers well....everything! Keep it up Lachlan

  • @lostinjks
    @lostinjks 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really like your video reviews because I'm able to see the emotion behind your words so we can see if you are excited or not about your headphone review. Even if a headphone has a good sound stage or crisp or smooth levels it really means nothing unless you know how it made you feel to listen to them, but I find myself watching a lot of headphones reviews as opposed to reading them mostly because I can listen to them while I'm working instead of putting everything on hold to read one.

  • @balance828
    @balance828 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like watching you review because you actually listen to it and gives your opinion... and compare it and you actually talk about what matters like comfort, sound signature. unboxing is so common, everyone can read the specification. keep up the good work bro! I even link your videos on forums bro!

    So I bought both K702 and these to check them out. I like flat phones.
    I slightly prefer the sound quality of the K702. Byt a tiny margain. Pretty much as good sound in these. BUT these seem so much better build, and is much better on my head, the K702's are so big and clunky. I'm pretty sure I'm keeping these, and seinding the K702's back. Both are great though!

    You're video reviews are exceptional!! I would encourage to keep doing them by video because it allow the viewer to get a better idea of the passion behind what you are reviewing. This is not to say a follow up summary written review wouldn't be helpful, but there's nothing like hearing the passion.
    Thanks much!

    i think that doing reviews this way would satisfy your viewers. Also it also displays your initial feelings of the headphones, what stands out (the boomy bass, the shouty mids etc). I think that you should keep your original cut let it sit a couple of days. and add annotations after if your feelings change, ex you got use to the bass now. This way, maybe our original feelings change over time. I left you message on the facebook regarding the questions you listed. Hope its not too long of a read

  • @thesoundfreq8861

    And btw, you can do away with comparisons and make that your written content in sites like head-fi.org. links for those comparisons may just be added in your video description. Just a suggestion. Thanks for all the hard work. Good on you mate!

  • @lachlanlikesathing
    @lachlanlikesathing  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't recommend the DT880 if you are sensitive to the XBA-4's treble... they do not really sound alike and the DT880 is even more treble forward. I would try the HD600 or the MA900 for a slightly lighter sound.

  • @Lucaat
    @Lucaat 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I prefer video reviews because I can see how enthusiastic or disappointed the host is about the headphone. Not to mention that I can see the headphone itself, prefer that over images. I also think that the sound should be described in the video. For a detailed analysis of the sound and comparison between headphones I would suggest a proper own website.

    I think you should go over the physical qualities in videos and describe the sound and make comparisons in written form.

  • @virgo47
    @virgo47 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    "Treble... can get fatiguing" - exactly. I like the headphones, especially for the price, but this thing is my main gripe about them. I probably have to equalize them - which I generally don't like to do. Or listen to them quieter. Otherwise great headphones, fantastic build really. Perhaps I'll get used to this treble peek, but I'm sad it's there. I don't need that much boom, so the base is fine with me, even if a bit weaker. I want to hear it, not necessarily feel it, so bass is fine, mids are great. Trebles are just... too great. For 150 Eur still fantastic phones.

  • @kainiskain

    I total agree with you. The ma900 does not sound relaxed or lay back. especially when I compare with the MDR F1. which is more relaxed sound and more comfortable.

    I think your current style is good enough. I really like to hear/watch your impressions here on youtube. may be you can do some full in depth reviews/comparisons after your video impressions on head-fi or your own website,like you did in ATH-AD900X vs ATH-AD1000X vs MDR-MA900 on head-fi .. so let me ask you the ultimate question, do you personally prefer MA900 over DT880? I know this is a subjective question but really like know which one you prefer...?

    Hi Lachlan,
    about your question at the end.
    Alot of people are visual learners and listening is faster than reading text. That's why I think your videos are so useful. I do want to emphasize on 'alot of people', most people I know prefer watching than reading.
    With that being said, knowing you're passionate about ur headphones and would like to explain more in depth, you can always do the writing for your own satisfaction. The people who are super interested in the specific headphone can then read your extended-review in text form.
    But I don't think it's necessary as you already give plenty of information to the general public through the videos :)
    But, if you really want to do an extra comparison of sound between the headphones, you can always make the video abit longer and compare it 'at the end' after you say all other basic things :)
    I would prefer the 2nd one..the video..just because I'm a visual learner myself :)
    Hope that helped!
    And thanks for all the videos!

    I think I know what you mean, but I think the longwindedness and confusingness seems to be simply a formal requirement, that most reviewers think they have to adhere to. I would include in that the longwinded examination of materials and looks which clutter and fill most videos, and though they may not be irrelevant, are certainly not top-priority (actually don't care who disagrees).

    If it's not too much to ask; are there any headphones similar to Audio Technica's AMH-AD900x? I want something that has a bit more bass (and warm sound to it), something that can go very well with Ambient Electronica like Tycho as well as Psychedelic Rock, such as Tame Impala, and Indie, such as Neutral Milk Hotel. Bass isn't a major concern but I'm afraid that AD900x's won't cut it. It will be my first pair of expensive headphones (above $100). I wanted something around the $150-$280 range.

Hope that helps.

    I'm sort of new in the audiophile business. Currently I have Sennheiser HD 493s and a Fiio Andes E07K portable amp. I am planning to get myself of these DT 880 Pro 250 Ohm headphones. I would like to know if there is anything better within this price range if possible. I mainly listen to Japanese female vocalist such as fripSide, Mami Kawada and LiSA who tend to hit the highs quite often and it fatigues my ears when listening with the HD 439s very much. Thanks in advance!

    I think you should pick 4 or 5 standard sound files/songs from TH-cam and use them as comparisons. For example, a reviewer claimed he couldn't hear the piano piece from a song called We Are Young by Fun when he wore Beats by Dre. I suggest a heavy bass song, a classical piece with a lot of flues, strings and cymbals, a vocal piece with a male voice, a vocal piece with a female voice and an action movie scene with lasers and explosions. I think it's more helpful by saying you couldn't hear the snare and cymbals on a particular song or the explosions in this scene sounded like somebody pressing buttons at a soda fountain.

    Regarding your question about video review or written reviews I think they are complementary. I like to watch a video review. See the visual aspects of equipment. And your expressions (not only yours, but many people that made video reviews) translate in some feelings about the product, and it is possible to see if exists some real excitement or enjoy about the product. Just after I will read reviews with more technical details and comparisons.

    Newb here: Hi, I bought Sony XB800 two weeks ago, they were just $50 in the Sony's online store and your review said they had too much bass, I don't have an audio amplifier, I use them connected to my Macbook and I feel they have bass but not that much bass, however, yesterday I found an EQ for the mac called 'Boom' and in a low end headphones (Panasonic RP-HJE140, $15) I felt they really boosted the sound, I haven't tried Boom + XB800 yet.
    My question is, what are your thoughts on digital EQs?

  • @hazza7404

    Is the treble on these similar to that of the sony xba 4 iems, quantity and extension wise? I am familiar with the xba 4 treble and although it is smooth,I find the treble extension on that a little too much that it is somewhat distracting.
    Deciding between these or the HD600 mainly for female voacals (house music/ mainstream pop/ Kpop :) ). I fear the HD600 would be too laid back for me similar to the HD555/595, but these would just sound like the sony xba 4's.

  • @VeitLehmann
    @VeitLehmann 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review, Lachlan! You don't need to cut, you really manage to focus on the essence, even in one take!
    Why I like video reviews like this? First, I get a better feel of how the headphones are built. Second, the sound of headphones is a highly subjective thing and thus are better presented subjectively. I can better interpret what you're meaning by certain sound descriptions than on a written review, simply by how you're saying it.
    I plan on buying a DT 880. But I'm unsure if I should go for 32 or 250 Ohms. I will also compare it once more to the DT 990 Pro, which is really a bargain these days. And maybe the Philips Fidelio X1 which I also really liked in my recent comparison session in the stores. Compared to these, Sennheiser HD 598, AKG K 701 and K 242 are out. The HD 600 is on par, but I liked the Beyer sound signature better. I haven't had a chance to listen to the ATH AD 900 or 1000, or to the Sony MA 900, but from what you told, I think I like the Beyers better.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Velt! I'd go for the 250 ohm :) If you preferred the DT880 over the HD600 I very much doubt you will like the MA900, but you might find the AD1000X interesting.

    They're good, but I wouldn't use them as a primary headphone. They exceed most alternatives in spaciousness and a certain realistic reverberation, but their clarity is mediocre (grainy and tinny) and they are a bit sharp in the highs. I've plaid Bioshock Infinite with them where they provided the necessary airiness and a grandeur which was quite something, but in most instances I can't listen to them for long, but I don't have them anymore anyway...

    Since you like relaxed headphones, have you thought to audition a Sennheiser HD600? Oh, and while the O2 is an excellent amp, if you like warmth, tube amps could take you "there".
    Anyways, you are probably very informed on those things, but i'd just like to hear your opinion on the HD600, which i have and found to solve all my needs(this is someone who found the MDR 1-R sibilant).

    I would prefer the full review, including sound quality and comparisons to be on the VIDEO. For me, at least, you don't have to spend quite so much time on the build quality. Thanks!

    I was pleasantly surprised by these headphones when I heard them. I have a pair of T70Ps that I really dislike as they have absolutely no bass and are way too bright and analytically for my taste. Unfortunately even though they are "Semi-Open" they are still open... People can hear the music and you can hear people... The idea is great but not the best. Have you heard the T770 Pro 32ohm Limited Editions? How would they compare? Anyway I suggest you do the written reviews as well on a site!

  • @colvinscorner
    @colvinscorner 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Laclan, I have a really important question. I'm looking for a new set of headphones and have narrowed my selection down to three choices. I'm looking at the Audiotechnica ath ad1000x, beyerdynamic dt 880, and the beyerdynamic dt 990. I'm unsure as which one would suit me best and would really appreciate your opinion. I pretty much only listen all styles of rock and I want these for gaming too. I already have a dac/amp to power whichever one I end up choosing. I would really be happy for your opinion and keep up the great the videos!

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joey Sendzik The DT880 is probably the most balanced of all three. The AD1000X has great female vocals but and a airy sound but it doesn't have a great deal of bass if that's important. The DT990 can get a little ear piercing because of its V-shaped sound and strong treble emphasis. The DT880 is less extreme than both.

      +laclanlikesathing Thanks for the feed back! And I've never used a semi open set of headphones like the 880's and I was looking for an open set. Does that mean I should get the audiotechnica headphones I was talking about or is there little difference between open and semi open designs?

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joey Sendzik The 880 is for all intents and purposes an open headphone.

      Wich is better, the 770 or the 880 pro version? how much sound leak does it has? There is difference in the quality of the sound between the 32 Ohm and the 250 Ohm version? Could you please do a sound leake test in the 880 pro? (Maybe maybe... :P)
      Please help me guys!

    Man, I just put the Linsoul ZS10 IEMs up against my Fostex TH7s and Pioneer X7 DJ pro headphones: the Linsouls sound 10000x better than either of the over the ear headphones.
    This is a sad reflection on headphones. I mean they fucking BLOW THEM BOTH AWAY. In every category. I may never buy headphones again. And the Linsouls only cost $55 US.
    Have you reviewed the Linsoul Tapes electrostatic hybrid IEMs yet? I cannot wait to hear those. I'm buying them sight unseen. So many headphones I audition either lack bass,
    are too tinny, shouty, or have a brash high end. Or have bass but no refinement. It really is amazing. The Linsouls however sound like the best bookshelf speakers you've ever heard,
    coupled with the best subwoofer you've ever heard. I'd stake my fucking life on it.

    Hello Laclan, I have a question. I really like bright sounding headphones. How would these compare to the AKG K550 and the MSR7 or M70x? Which would you recommend more, when knowing I really like bright sounding headphones with lots of treble?

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The K550 and the M70x are the best bets, choose between them based on practicality - the K550 is much larger.

    • @iCupboard
      @iCupboard 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Hi! Thanks for your answer. And would the AKG K550 and the M70x be the same soundwise? How do these compare?

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid I haven't heard them side by side and no longer own the K550. They should be quite different in character. But honestly I would choose between them first based on usage. The K550 is really too large to use outside the house. The M70x maybe isn't as comfortable for long term home use. So the decision is easier. If you want something quite bright sounding, also look at open Audio Technica cans.

    Can I run these with the Blue Yeti. Here is the stats for the amplifier on the unit: Headphone Amplifier
    Impedance:16 ohms
    Power Output (RMS): 130 mW
    THD: 0.009%
    Frequency Response: 15 Hz - 22 kHz
    Signal to Noise: 100dB
    Cheers

      +Drakthiron I did it. Sounds absolutely wonderful. I had some bzz sound, but installing Equalizer APO and dampening the DB by -6 removed it completely. They sound freaking awesome, nice to see the bzz sound go away with high notes. :) Equalizer apo = my hero!! Still have enough juice to power them with the build in amp of my yeti. I tried SMSL SD793-II dac/amp. But it sound too harsh with these neutral headphones, I actually prefer my Yeti dampening the harshness. Weird I enjoy Yeti dac/amp more then a dedicated one. ^^

    Hello Laclan, i'm in the market for a pair of open headphone for comfort, sound stage, and less fatigue (i'm using M50). how would you compare AD900x to DT880?
    thanks.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryan Yong The DT880 may be just as fatiguing as the M50 because of the treble. The AD900X is safer. You could also consider the Sennheiser HD650 or the Sony MDR-MA900; those are pretty smooth and will sound bassier than the AD900X - which you might be more used to coming from the M50.
