The Gioconda Smile is a rare piece of drama written by Aldous Huxley and published in 1957. in 1964 it was turned into an Australian television play.
Henry Hutton is a wealthy man who lives in an English country house with his crippled wife, Emily, who is looked after by Nurse Braddock. Their neighbour is Janet Spence, an unmarried woman who looks after her crippled father and is in love with Henry. When Emily dies, Janet declares her love, but Henry is going to marry a younger woman. Then Nurse Braddock thinks the death might not be natural and demands an autopsy.

What does Aldoux mean when he says: "She was implying a compliment to her own Taste and Penetration?" Taste and penetration?
Hi Ana. I have looked into it further and this is what I think. But first here is a bit more of the quote for context:
“She made you feel that part of his glory had entered into Janet Spence when she tendered him that half-crown for the copy of the oleograph. She was implying a compliment to her own taste and penetration. A genuine Old Master for half a crown.”
An Oleograph is a type of painting, so it seems that she is buying a painting for half a crown and that painting compliments her style. I don’t understand the word penetration in this context, but Aldous Huxley is far better at wielding the English language than I am.
