Homer | The Iliad - bk.10 - Night Operations

In Book 10, the Greeks, demoralized by their losses, hold a council during the night to strategize. Nestor proposes a reconnaissance mission to gather intelligence on the Trojan camp. Diomedes volunteers for the task and selects Odysseus as his companion. Armed and determined, the two Greek warriors set out under the cover of darkness.
Meanwhile, in the Trojan camp, Hector sends a spy, Dolon, to infiltrate the Greek lines. Diomedes and Odysseus encounter Dolon, capture him, and extract valuable information about the Trojan positions and their allies. After learning what they need, they kill Dolon and proceed to the camp of the Thracians, a Trojan ally. There, they slay the Thracian king, Rhesus, and several of his men before stealing his prized horses. The pair returns to the Greek camp victorious, bringing both the horses and critical intelligence, providing a morale boost to the beleaguered Achaeans.
The Iliad is one of the oldest and most celebrated works of Western literature, attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer. Composed around the 8th century BCE, this epic poem is set during the final year of the Trojan War, a legendary conflict between the Greeks (Achaeans) and Trojans over the abduction of Helen. Rich in poetic imagery and timeless themes, The Iliad explores the wrath of Achilles, the futility of war, and the pursuit of honor and glory amidst the horrors of battle.
