so happy for you! I'm an underwriter, too (in that my zero drafts are always short and in each new draft I add more details), but I don't really have a preference for dialogue, my zero drafts are kinda like stream of consciousness. Act 2 is most challenging for me, too, but when I get it right, it's so rewarding! This video motivated me, thank you for sharing! 💓
I'm actually blown away because I've never heard of a dialogue-first approach! That's really cool. A lot of us tend to come up with snippets of dialogue before sitting down to write a scene, so maybe that can be a way to keep the gems that pop up in our heads instead of losing them to forgetfulness. I'm also coming to the end of Act 1 (fell behind this month bc my last year of college has me *busy*) but I think I'm more excited for Act 2. The setup is fun to write, but with my WIP the shenanigans only start in Act 2 and I want to be writing about the whole gang already (as they don't come together until the end of Act 1).
I'm so interested in your dialogue-first technique!!! I think it might be very helpful for people who get easily stuck when something doesn't go exactly as planned!
Yayyy! I only just recently found you, but I'm so happy nano is going great so far. Alsoooo, not to pry, but the line from your novel that you so _graciously_ blessed my eyes with is so beautiful 😭 I agree, I agree, I agreeeee
i was so happy to see another video dropped today. currently went down to see my mom so, hopefully, a new setting (not really) will bring inspiration. I started my book at my mom's place ( I get what you mean about home but not *home* lol). happy to see you finished Act 1though, still figuring out the structure of my book. Learning Acts and other such things. Still new to writing but it's been a great journey so far.
When I see a character of mine having more than four self insert characteristics I like to give one of those to a different character and substitute in the opposite characteristic in its place. Does my character love dogs? Short, extrovert, artistic, deviant dreamer? Now they are a tall introvert who loves cats and is an artistic, deviant dreamer. I used to make my character's physical traits be completely random. Just spin the wheel. Green hair and black eyes, who cares. But I try to think of where they came from and who they are as being important to THAT story. Why them? Why their story and am I the right person to write it? Who should they be and how can I make them the MOST interesting? It helps to watch those random street interviews on YT. Why does she have a shaved head? She let her little niece double bleach her hair as practice and burnt it all off. There's a story behind every trait.
Hot take but every character should be a little bit of a self insert. That way they all get to shine in their roles and you can beat yourself up if needed and still come out the winner lmao

dialogue really first helps me start writing a scene, i guess because it feels the most dramatic, or maybe because its easier than description?
26K words by now is terrific. Proud of you, Kris.
