Its good to be a king! Anyway... This was a character who did not lust for power for powers sake, but because he genuinely believed that he was right and that him being in charge would make things better. thus well - he in the end employed his superior knowledge to make lives of people who became his charges better.
@@petermirtitsch1235 always thought it was a great couple. As well as when sheppard said that bout woolsey for the good dr. "John Sheppard, are you defending my honour?"
I think he was a special treat for us fans to see come back from time to time, similar to MacGyver's archnemesis Murdoc (who was only in SEVEN episodes!). You don't want to overuse your special rogue characters too much for fear of altering their arcs heavily; its entirely possible that he could have gotten worse as a nemesis to Jack had he been in more. I always felt he was used just right, maybe once a year for an episode or two once his rogue operation was over. His appearance in the Russian freezer was a shocker and awesome; then his opportunity to retire to another planet, then his kingly turn, and even his redemption in the end!
He is one of my favorite characters in the show, from villain to redemption he was an excellent character excellently played. Hopefully we will get to see him again in another series.
Every time I rewatch an episode with Maybourne, I just automatically knee-jerk a "You RAT BASTARD!" Harry is one of the best characters in the series, honestly; an episode with him and Jack is pure gold
You should Interview The Doctor - Robert Picardo(Richard Woolsey) He was another character that was hated at first but became a good guy towards the end.
And yet I would say he was the same guy in the beginning as he was in the end. Simply someone who believed he should be in charge since his knowledge was superior to many. A person who does not lust for power for powers sake, but actually because he believes he would make things better for everyone. He always wanted to make things better... but he enjoyed some benefits. He just wanted to help those who would appreciate putting him in charge.
I didn't know what arugula was until that episode where Maybourne says he hates arugula. Now I grow it in my garden. I'm healthier because of Maybourne.
Always loved how Maybourne was portrayed, from a weasily shady govt type to his eventual full on redemption. Well done Tom, you made one of the best 'villains' on TV :D
Well there was no redeptition you have a guy who genuinly believes its good for others when he is in charge... because he thinks his superior knowledge would make their lives better if he leads... he just needed to find a group where that would work out for benefits of everyone.
He was such a great addition to the deep character pool! Stargate is one of the only series that had so many small parts that were cast and portrayed so fantastic. There are too many forgettable characters today on new series. Not Stargate!
They also had their missteps. There are a bunch of Tok'ra they wanted to turn into regular guests but the majority fan reaction was "I wish it was Jacob instead".
Absolutely! Love what happened with Harry in SG1. He was fabulous & one of my faves. Best scene ever is when he threw the fish at Jack. So glad he had a happy ending as King. It would be nice to see him pop up in the next SG series that Joseph Mallozi is talking about.. I'm still a huge fan & rewatch his episodes lots!
Maybourne had great character development, it was great to see even a random bad guy develop so much over the course of the series, man I miss stargate
Maybourne was one of my favorite characters on Stargate SG1. Tom McBeath played a great bad guy but when they let his humanness come through like in It's good to be King I thought they really hit a home run. Tom is an interesting, fun and likeable actor and I wish the very best for him. I go back and watch Stargate episodes over and over again and the episodes with Tom are the most enjoyable. Paradise Lost is another example of Tom's versatility, again it showed us his human side. I watched Tom play an escaped convict in the movie, Firestorm, he as an excellent supporting cast member and again, played a great bad guy. Tom has had a long career as an actor starting in 1984, so many movies and TV roles, he's definitely been busy! Tom McBeath, Live long and prosper!
thats because he's a three dimensional character. Its really only something you can do with side characters when you have the 20+ episode format. That way you can have a guy show up 2-3 times a season and develop without hijacking the show from the mains. I think this is one of the biggest tragedies with new shows all going to 10 or less episodes a season.
Amoung my favorite episodes, all with Maybourne in them. His personality was such you just couldn't not like him. McBeath always had an excellent knowledge of the character, even his body language. Always a good foil for the SG team.
I have the Stargate SG1 complete 10 seasons on DVD and look forward to watching this wonderful character come forward as the show progressed. Thanks for posting this interview. The scenes with O'Neill always kept me laughing. Great talent, great writing made this series shine. I loved Maybourne.
Great to see Tom again! I'm rewatching SG1 again and I saw the episode when Maybourne takes Jack for his team to steal technology from other civilizations just yesterday, near the end of season 3. I love Stargate SG1 and Atlantis. I'm a little sad that MGM didn't made the movies they wanted to do. Congratulations for all the cast of the three series and all the staff from Euskadi, in north Spain for the fantastic work they did!!
SG1, A show with great main and side characters. Maybourne, he should have been in more episodes, but looking back, you can’t mess with near perfection.
Man I am so glad Maybourne redeemed himself. I am so glad the writters did that. Tom was great in SG-1 and I loved the transformation. Also great work from Tom portraying this character.
Ah Colonel Maybourne. Not a fan of him at first but as he developed I grew to love his character. He became one of my favorites. Thank you sir for all that you have done. Many, many hours of enjoyment watching and re watching the series, my favorite of them all.
Really enjoyed the character, glad they turned him from an idiot into a super spy on the run. The relationship between he and Jack was hilarious. Really wanted him to come back as a Tokra tbh.
Oh man, Maybourne is one of my favorite characters, my favorite scene is when he confesses to his subjects that he's not a prophet and doesn't deserve to be king, only to be told by them that no, he really did help them and they really do love him as their ruler. He has value outside of the lies he told
LOVED this actor in his role. Knowing there is a new Stargate project coming out... and the tendency to do a couple of nods to previous series whenever they start a new one.. I would be hella stoked if they did a Maybourne cameo in the new series to give us a little tease as to what happened to his character over the years. His chemistry with the character of Jack , was legendary.
Ahhhh!!! Maybourne was my favorite character/actor from my favorite show!! By the way Tom, nice roll in "Boys! Raise Giant Mushrooms In Your Cellar" in rbt. All your work really stuck with me, even the little things~
Maybourne is by an extremely wide margin, my favorite side character in the entire series. His growth as a character was fantastically done, in my opinion. I don't think it would be possible to not despise him, the first few episodes he appeared in, but the more and more he appeared, the more and more I began to love him. Last episode he appeared in was one of my favorite episodes ever. It was funny seeing him rule over an entire civilization AND he had a happy ending.. oh, and we can't forget Wayne Brady was in the episode! He's such a self-serving insufferable asshole, but in such an endearing way.. he was almost always self-serving, but he had a heart.
Mayborn had such a great story arch. I have read this other places but his character was not evil. The writers did good with him and the actor killed it.. great job man you really brought something to show.
