  • Back in 2009, popular flight sim website AVSIM went down unexpectedly as the result of a malicious attack. The entire operation turned out to be an inside job of sorts, and here today we'll examine what happened and what the aftermath was.

I really hope this channel grows quickly. The content is absolutely top notch. Its easy to see LGR has been an inspiration to you - it's so refreshing to see and hear quality content without the theatrics on a flight simulation video. These snippets of FS history should not be forgotten.
Thank you so much for your contribution to the hobby - your FS9 retrospective was incredibly moving. It too helped me get through family tragedy in my younger years by providing a whole virtual world in which to escape. Looking forward to the next video.

Well done sir! I remember this quite clearly as I was a moderator before this hack and am now a member of the Board of Directors at AVSIM. It was indeed a very frustrating time...

Love this channel and I will recommend it on my Twitch streams. I love the history of flight simulation and these videos give great glimpses back in time, to the earlier days of the hobby. In fact, I have many DVDs full of FS2004 files, from the AVSIM library - this video here makes me wonder if I have any of those missing files just sitting on those data discs . . .

Another fantastic video - I have found my niche! One add-on that is quite obscure is the Flight1 Giants of the Sky 747 (sold also by Just Flight as Jumbo 747-400). It was originally developed for Flight Simulator 98 and later updated for Flight Simulator 2000 compatibility. There's very little information about this add-on online, but Flight1 still has the product page up though. I have the add-on but unfortunately it crashes my FS2000 shortly after taking off.

Been using Avsim since 2017 for downloading repaints and airport add-ons. Really interesting video.

Avsim now - or at least, in the buildup and initial release of FS2020, when I was using it most - just sort of seems like a den of complainers. People confidently and incorrectly claiming one thing or another, passing judgement on a product neither they nor anyone they knew had touched. Every internet forum or page has these users, but with Avsim, it seemed like that was all there was.
I'm hearing about how it was nice back in the day - a helpful place - and I can't help but think that most net positive users either moved on from the hobby, were promoted, or moved to a different place, like discord or reddit. While neither platform is necessarily free from unpleasantness - in fact, quite the opposite - compared to avsim (or at least, avsim when I used it), they're nearly heaven.
That being said, hats off to the avsim team.
The video is great, though. I like this presentation style, and I've subscribed. Please keep making content.
