I've been a finish carpenter for over 35 years, you cannot possibly use just one brand, there are many tools that are better than others, for years Bosch jigsaws were and are still the best, Milwaukee Sawzall's are the best, Senco had the best pneumatic guns, don't put all your eggs in one basket. I've looked at the festool miter but it felt cheap! My thoughts that it would be okay in a shop but not getting thrown in and out of a truck every day and extensive use. I will be watching on how it holds up
It holds up just fine. After 10 years, I’ve left it in the shop and now use the 60 for site work. Getting too old to lug the 120 around 😂 Festool tools are a lot more robust than they are given credit for. 25 years and still a happy fan.
I too had a hard time with Festools cost, however after other brands broke down or just did not give me the butter cut I switched! You may pay up front, but I never worry about the quality any more and todate have never had a tool go out of spec. For cabinet making I use my MFT3 for assembly, however I have moved to the Dashboard bench to do my sheet good cutting, whilst using all of my festool tools. I find it works better with my workflow and gives me the capability to cut down full 4X8 sheets with one setup. It is also portable! The KAPEX does put off some dust, however it is minor and easy to clean up when sawing inside a home.
As a guy who has been doing carpentry work for over 50 years, your work is good. You have to be fussy to be successful. What I really like is your honest assessment of tools. Most companies make a good product. And there are a few who make a great product. And when it comes to tools you get what you pay for, if you can afford it,lol. Love the Festool and there are a few products they make that are second to no one. However, there are some they make that are really no better than others. Thx for your honest opinion.
Pistol grip could be some minor inconvenience, but I got used to it no problem. It has one real advantage, it is ambidextrous. My girlfriend is a lefty and it's much easier for her to use it. I'm not a wood worker, but I'm building a house and decided to make furniture myself. I liked Festool, but I thought I can't justify the price. I finally bought a track saw, sander and dust extractor. Suddenly, everything was a bit easer and much cleaner. I also liked the Domino, but, again, the price. My friend has it and I borrowed it for a few days. I went and bought one. I'm not even half way done, but it already paid itself, it saved me a bunch of time. My miter saw is on it's last legs and, fortunately, the friend has a Kapex, too, so I was able to test it for a good week and I'm going to get one next week. Pricy? Yes. Worth it? For a regular DIY-er probably no, but if you have a big project, I would say, yes.
Less flashy, but very, very nice tool is the CSX drill. I think the new version has batteries that work on certain other festool tools, but I love the original, despite the batteries for it being exclusively useable on the CSX drill.
I just bought two of the new CXS 12v drills, great little drills. I actually only bought one at first, but after using it, I bought a second--one for my screw bits, and the other for my drill bits.
As a European, my former DeWalt (Old Elu’s) and Bosch had pistol grips. Still I found the Kapex 120 some getting used to. A tip: Point your pointy finger forward and on the side of the saw and pull the trigger with the long finger - it makes somehow the movement feeling much more natural and controlled. The KS 120 is just a joy to use.
I can’t blame you one bit. When I first saw Festool prices I thought one would have to be crazy to spend so much more on their tools. Fast forward a couple of years and I came across a midi dust extractor for 130$. I added a cyclone (not theirs) to the top and was blown away how well it worked. I recently bought their orbital 6” 150 sander and again I’m amazed. If I were doing this for a living I would use their line for sure. The quality is far beyond anything out there.
I’ve been a contractor for 43 years. I’m licensed, bonded, insured....legit. I think anyone who would send a “ demand letter” over your humorous “t’s” and hoodies....that company is a “ little bitch”. Just one man’s opinion. I consider the best performing business owners in the world of contracting building/carpentry to be some of the last of the real men in this world of sensitive feelings, wokeness, those easily triggered. It’s so hard to run a business like ours....only the strong and honest survive. That said, there are weak, crooked, whiney bitches out there. Said tool manufacturer is one of them. Dave Heitman in Omaha dba Dave the Carpenter. Semper P.s. love your content and relaxed demeanor. Your skills are off the chart.
Smart man. I have started to convert over to festool getting rid of all my Milwaukee crap. All the red tools started to fall apart or fail after a couple of years.
Awesome Saw I am 65 years old and have been working in the trade since I was 14 years old and just retired this month and the tools that are now available are amazing Your work is incredible and very professional keep up the good job and thanks for keeping the trade alive
Richard got a cease and desist letter to stop making tshirts using a copyrighted logo. Every company in the world will do the same thing because if you don’t protect it other companies can start using it. That being said he might be able to get away with it saying it’s fair use and parody. But that’s a legal battle against a major corporation and probably isn’t worth the hassle.
Who was on the grassy knoll in Dallas that day? Festool. Where was the moon landing faked? The Festool warehouse, obviously. It was all part of their evil plot to sell green tools.
Nah the only only thing is now that he’s being paid n sponsored by them n now he need to talk great things about their tools he used to talk shit about them money can buy anything specially if it a fat check by them
@@mikelmar5723You're right, Festool killed Kennedy and faked the moon landing too, just to sell more green tools. And who do you think planted the explosives in building 7 and invented coronavirus? That's right, Festool. It was just part of their evil plan to sell green tools.
I remember watching a video of yours three years ago titled "DeWalt guy tries Festool for the first time (not good)". I refrained from commenting on it at the time because you just didn't have enough time to understand and appreciate Festool tools. Damn, you have come a long way since then. 😎 I'm a hobbyist woodworker with a fairly decent skill set and I really enjoy my Festool tools. I just bought a Castle 110 like the first Castle pocket hole cutter you bought. I drove over to Petaluma and picked it up at Castle USA. They are just the best people there. 👍 All the Best, Chuck.
Oh wow, you have come a long way. In your first review, you had trouble activating the laser on the miter saw and now you own one, have so many systainers and keep on doing such awesome work.
Nice video, Richard~! I too have started drifting over to the "lime green" side after 30+ years as a woodworking, having said that I'd never do it. I kept hearing so much about how much better the sanding experience is with Festool. After seeing a LOT of demos at local stores and viewing dozens of others' experiences on TH-cam (and doing a lot of soul searching), I picked up their ETS 125 (5") random orbital sander and CT36 dust extractor. Such a difference~!! That was last Christmas. About a month ago, I took another plunge and picked up the DF 500 Domino. Know anyone looking for a slightly used biscuit joiner?? LOL I don't know what's next, but I'd like a track saw and I'm seesawing between Kreg ($$) and Festool ($$$$). And then, there's my 12-year old Dewalt compound (non-sliding) miter saw. You're right, it's a total rabbit hole~!! Looking forward to more video from you using the Kapex.
Been adding more festool myself. I'm on the Metabo HPT platform now expanding their products. Especially the 10 inch miter that I know most people wouldn't like. But just as you stated there are some things that you benefit. For me one thing I really like is the hybrid feature, that works better than the dewalt one. Front adjustable controls and things like that. What I'm wanting is better intgration with dust control, and those integrations with the wings like that because man what a pain. So I'm glad you did a quick overview because it's looking like if I do get to the point of changing, i may go that route. Only thing for me is that saw stand is big, and I don't have space for a big stand like that on the center of the miter saw, maybe a collapsible stand would be great. additionally, what willyou be doing with that big stand that you had before?
I use DeWalt in my industrial electrician trade. I have tried the Milwaukee because all the hype they push at electricians. For me and my experience the Milwaukee does not tolerate the abuse and the grueling nature of the industrial environment. I wore them out often in months, and even in weeks. The batteries needed to be charged a lot. It was funny because I thought if Milwaukee is the best I never want anything to do with the others. Then I got a DeWalt kit for Christmas. I gave it a try. Wow. Hands down the DeWalt is my go to in the industrial environment now. All the crap people told me about the Milwaukee was just that; crap. I packed up what was left of my Milwaukee stuff at work and brought it all home. That was eight years ago. The DeWalts I bought after that drill kit and that drill kit are still being used. I have not replaced one of them. I still have the Milwaukees I brought home. The Milwaukees make good wood working homeowner type tools. They feel good in me hands; ergonomically satisfying. None of that makes me money though. DeWalt all the way for grueling industrial work environments; the batteries last for years and I have not replaced a cordless tool in over 8 years. Talk feces all you want. I know what I know and I don’t buy crap because people tell me I should. I am glad that I got that drill driver kit and I am stupid happy with it yet today. And you should have seen me face when I got that DeWalt stuff the first time. I was all about, yeah, thank you, while I wondered how to re-gift it. Glad I kept it. 😊
I was shocked that it took this long for DeWalt, Milwaukee, or Makita to try to stop you from selling those shirts. When I first started watching your videos I saw the DeWakee and thought, This guy has balls. Trade Mark and Branding laws are so critical and even if the company cannot win in court a multimillion-dollar company can run you through the legal process and bankrupt you in a blink of an eye. It is a good choice to get out of the business of selling that stuff. In a Court of Law, it is not always the court's decision that causes a person to lose it is the cost of the ongoing process. However, I do like the concept of the logo you created because many of us are not brand loyal with all of our tools. I own no Milwaukee, my wife is a Lowes Manager, I am Big Blue brand loyal. Good luck with the Team Green upgrades I am going through the same process currently.
I had the same reaction the first time I saw it! They're doing it because they don't want to allow a precedent or let it get out of control, not because they feel threatened.
You don't have to copy a trademark exactly for you to be in violation of it. When you look at what he did it is instantly recognizable. That's why it doesn't look like gibberish you can tell what it is. Even if he had enough money for them to not bankrupt him, I think he would lose in court.
I have been a dewalt guy for the past 20 years. Over these past few years I have noticed the quality of their product diminishing. As tools wear out I am replacing them with Festool.
It folds up like origami and the footprint is extremely small ! For portable mitre work, especially up stairs, there is no other option. Had to carry my dewalt 780 with extensions up 3 flights of stairs... wasnt fun on me back
I used to laugh at festool prices too. The domino is what started me down the Festool systainer collection path as well 😅 I love how many accessories you can use with the track saws. They really work hard to engineer these tools with maximum convenience and usability. I'm always impressed with festool and I get the hype now.
Damn It!!! Every serious wood worker is into Festool / SawStop. It makes sense they are actually innovating while every one else is doing something equal to 50 years ago.
My son bought the same setup with the companion vacuum. You can set that up in a finished house and it is CLEAN, just amazing. The saw has the most exact laser system I've ever used. It isn't cheap, but it is good. Also, that stand is great, well engineered and easy to use.
The miter saw stand is nice (I own one as well), but the thing I don't like about it is the one leg just doesn't keep the end of the extensions stable enough. They should have put two legs on it at angles which would have locked it in place better.
We can guess at which "brand" sent you the C&D letter. And that brand is slowly losing because of their ridiculous behavior not valuing guys like you who have a HUGE amount of influence on what many of us go and buy. I would have never considered Festool before but that's the brand I'll be looking at first. Buy once, cry once.
What ticks me off about Festool? You know when you're using any other tool brand and you think "why didn't they make it x way" or "why doesn't this work well with this"? All their stuff plays nice together. I've been slowly changing out myself.
I also use my kapex wings on my mft, you just need to purchase some extra fittings and modify the head so it clears when your clamping it up to the table
Be careful on copyright and trademark infringment and slander issues the fact that you received a cease and desist letter says in capital letters you are on their radar, get advice from your counsel ASAP especially about continuing to sell or give away materials that you have in inventory that could be found to infringe. Just the legal costs for this type of litigation can drive even medium sized companies that have corporate limits to what can be taken into insolvency if you are not a corporation ask your advisers if you should incorporate best wishes hope this goes away. New sub. Ray
I don’t mind the vertical handle on a miter saw, but what’s anointing on my Kapex, is the safety button on the top. It’s awkward. What I did, is engage the button and tape it in that position. Now I don’t need to use my thumb.
4:55 Your attitude from before would keep me from subscribing. Your acknowledgment of other possibilities and your desire to expand your capabilities, will make me a subscriber. Well done young man! Keep it coming. 👍
Kapex Tip: After you press the button under your thumb and release the saw lock mechanism, you can let up and reposition your thumb for a more natural grip while operating the saw.
Festool isn’t a bad brand, but it’s out of the reach of most tradespeople. You need to have a strong income/customer base to afford them. Also, you would need to dedicate yourself to buying these “higher end” tools. Eventually I’ll get what I need from the lime green brand, especially if you do trim and set up in your client’s houses. You need to price your jobs and dedicate your budgets properly to get these tools. Don’t hate them, just don’t overdo it when you start putting money into the tools. Get what you need.
I think we all suspect it must be the big D taking him on. Speaking of them, did you even try the new DCS781B? I bought that saw this time last year when it first came out and what a BEAST of a miter saw that runs on batteries ONLY. I only use it with a minimum 9 aH 60V battery and it nearly lasts all day. I do have 3 to rotate but I don’t think I ever had to. My longest days were cutting 16-20 stairs that I made from LVP along with cutting baseboards and 1/4 round. The saw went all day 9+ hours of heavy use and still had juice left. The dust collection is also improved over previous generations as the dust boot is a heavier rubber and is a three piece until to flex over and around certain cuts. It’s not as good as the Kapex as that saws shroud covers much more of the blade to channel more dust, but if you ever find yourself needing a cordless miter saw, for half the price of the Kapex, I highly recommend the DCS781.
Dcs781 is a great miter saw, I've been using it since January. I picked up the 15ah flexvolt battery to pair with it and I don't think I've had to charge it since. Heavy saw, big footprint for sure but overall totally impressed. My dws780 stays at my house now
I originally was going to say their dust extractor is the gateway drug, but I think any of them could be considered so. They have a level of precision that’s above the competition. No so much that you need to trade everything in and not so much that beginners or anyone really needs them. It’s just really nice and most woodworkers that have been doing this for a while can appreciate it. In their defense though, you can not beat Festools efficiency to extract dust from the tools, specially routers, track saws and miter saws to the dust extractor. And of course the domino does well extracting dust, but Festool also enjoys being the only game in town with a domino.
I think that my initial knee jerk opposition to Festool was what seemed like an Idolatrous and Clubby Relationship that users seemed to have with this brand rather than the merits of the tools. Then I considered how I felt about my Lie Nielsen Tools and I realized that this was not Idolatry but an acknowledgment of what quality is……
For a pro festool makes sense. As a hobbyist there is no way I can justify the cost. Sorry to hear about the lawsuit threat. If anything they get free publicity out of it 🤷♂️
I do remember your video of not liking the Kapex Grip but I had hopes you would see the light. Now, if you buy the NEW TSV 60 KEB-F-Plus that has the scoring blade you will have switched to the Lime Green light.
Surprising. I remember the first review of this and it was pretty much complete opposite. Got to say though the kapex is good but my 250mm dewalt flex volt is accurate and has decent dust collection. I also built a extension and shed out of reach of main power
I am downsizing no not my estate ... The miter saw, currently use 12" DeWalt, that I calibrated for precise cuts. With fast adjust material clamp. After considering 7.25 cordless like the Makita first choice, metabo second. Both have large cutting capacity, Makita better dust collection also lighter. Metabo is pricey at $1300. Metabo has an adjust similar to the festool a rack and pinion like adjustments. In case the Makita disappoints talked to Hilti ,the rep listened, as finish carpenter, asked for certain features. He made notes even asked if variable speed be of any use? Hilton will listen to customer request unlike Milwaukee.
Well they tend to drag things out in court til you cease to exist financially, thus how they generally win since they have deeper pockets…. Not because it’s legit copywrite infringement. The letter is just a lawyer trying to bully him.
also on leveling the winds you can unscrew the extra extensions on the end of the wings. Then use the clamp that comes with the saw and you can level on the ends of the wings with mitersaw.
I have the 8.5in cordless Kapex and though I like it, I prefer my 8.5in 40v Makita. I had to use a piece of metal to make the safety button stay pressed in and I used a piece of tape to hold the top button down so all I have to do is pull down and press the trigger which makes the saw much nicer to use. I also removed the guard and the shadow line is much nicer, and cuts are easier not having the guard get in the way. But even after all the mods I did, I still like using my Makita more. The pistol grip handle just isn't as comfortable to use as the flat handles are. I have a ton of Festool though, and tend to love them. I recently purchased two of the new CXS 12v drills and those little things are amazing.
The only thing you can criticize is not buying the right tools for the job. At the end of the day time is money, cleaning up is time, setting up is time, tearing down is time & call-backs are time.
Love your detailed explanations on tools. I spent half of my life in Germany and the assumption that your tools should pretty much "last a lifetime" was very common over there. Europe is a densly populated place with enormous competition - especially Germany. On top of that people are willing to spend good money on quality tools that last. From time to time I'm really missing that crazily intense striving for perfection. But that's what you're getting in those tools. Keep your wonderful videos coming.
Festool is expensive because it is all made in Germany and the USA. They refuse to export their jobs to China and that is something I can respect. Even if it is mostly out of my budget for the type of work I do.
I'm of the same opinion on cordless vs corded miter saws. I love my cordless saw...when batteries make sense. However, if I'm gonna be within 100' of an outlet, I'll lug out my corded saw any day. No spool up, no bogging when the batteries start to run down, no dead saw in the middle of a critical cut. My truck is full of cordless tools but my corded miter saw and table saw are still the top dogs.

I think the new version has batteries that work on certain other festool tools, but I love the original, despite the batteries for it being exclusively useable on the CSX drill.
i had the old cxs and i now have the new one and man the new one kicks ass it's one of my favorite tools to use. makes doing kitchens a dream
I just bought two of the new CXS 12v drills, great little drills. I actually only bought one at first, but after using it, I bought a second--one for my screw bits, and the other for my drill bits.
Glad to see you come around . Festool is so worth it !
As a german and festool fan I like your choices, used to hate on them too but once you use it there is no going back (former makita guy)
And if you’re doing it for a living, the three year all inclusive warranty helps
Picked up the KSC 60 and it’s way better than the last 6 miter saws I’ve owned.
Semper
P.s. love your content and relaxed demeanor. Your skills are off the chart.
I had the Kapex for 15 years now, mostly do interior finishing and install , I mostly like it but it does have a few things I don't like
Smart man. I have started to convert over to festool getting rid of all my Milwaukee crap. All the red tools started to fall apart or fail after a couple of years.
Awesome Saw
I am 65 years old and have been working in the trade since I was 14 years old and just retired this month and the tools that are now available are amazing
Your work is incredible and very professional keep up the good job and thanks for keeping the trade alive
Is the Festool REALLY that much better than the Makita ????? Not so sure about that --------
TH-cam channels have to change things up for clicks.
👍👍
Just think about the three year all inclusive warranty alone
This guy made a video on how the kapex was a wack saw, and how festool wasn't the brand for him, amd now he's all festool. Strange
Who was on the grassy knoll in Dallas that day? Festool. Where was the moon landing faked? The Festool warehouse, obviously. It was all part of their evil plot to sell green tools.
Richard admitted he was already biased against Festool at the time
@@robhaydnsei they obviously captured his family to get him to shill for their tool brand. there is no other explanation!
Wow he finally drank the Kool-Aid. The lime green monster has won.
Nah the only only thing is now that he’s being paid n sponsored by them n now he need to talk great things about their tools he used to talk shit about them money can buy anything specially if it a fat check by them
I love it!
Sure can. I remember him years ago and he convinced me through a review of his not to get the kapex and went with dewalt. @@mikelmar5723
@@chuckgrumble5440Richard admitted he was prejudiced then but after using Domino and TS 75 he took a more serious look
All the Best, Chuck.
LOL
I don't know what's next, but I'd like a track saw and I'm seesawing between Kreg ($$) and Festool ($$$$).
6:56 You will come to realize that that clamp is the best one on the market. It's the quickest one to adjust to different thicknesses. 👍
it is the best ive ever used. So good
I use DeWalt in my industrial electrician trade.
Your logo does not infringe on their brand. It is your artwork…original artwork…your idea. Tell them to go pound sand.
I have been a dewalt guy for the past 20 years.
Over these past few years I have noticed the quality of their product diminishing.
As tools wear out I am replacing them with Festool.
Congratulations to you! 👍
Ive had this saw for six years its a great saw. You should have shown how easy it is to fold up and lift into van.Enjoy Richard/
It folds up like origami and the footprint is extremely small ! For portable mitre work, especially up stairs, there is no other option. Had to carry my dewalt 780 with extensions up 3 flights of stairs... wasnt fun on me back
You are getting what you deserve! DO NOT MESS with big box companies, they have $$$$ hope you learned your lesson.
i have a kapex and after 10 years of use framing and finish work ... it still cuts beautiful today
I knew you’d go full on Festool at some point. It’s only a matter of time 😎
Check out the Lamello Zeta P2. Just picked one up and I'v been blown away with how useful that tool has been.
I used to laugh at festool prices too. The domino is what started me down the Festool systainer collection path as well 😅 I love how many accessories you can use with the track saws. They really work hard to engineer these tools with maximum convenience and usability. I'm always impressed with festool and I get the hype now.
They are the best. I can't afford the full kit but I do have the track saw. It's the best.
Once you go Festool, you'll never go back 🤣
Make sure you’re using heavy gauge wire on your extension cords; more power!
Damn It!!! Every serious wood worker is into Festool / SawStop. It makes sense they are actually innovating while every one else is doing something equal to 50 years ago.
I am surprised how timid you were with the Kapex. You could slice thru 4” in one take without any issue at all!
Say goodbye to cutting 4 5/8 crown . Actually downgraded to a 10” lol
Copyright and trademark protection is real.
Where can your T shirts be purchased at? I can't find any links anywhere for merch.
People love to hate on Festool, but you really can't argue with quality and precision.
The weight vs. Cut capacity and dust extraction alone makes the kapex worth it, not to mention the other amazing features
Festool is fine in a small shop situation. Does not stand up to daily transport.
Have you watched Inside Carpentry's newest video on his new Kapex saw? Does yours have the same uneven bed his does?
A person with your skills deserves the best. Great work!!
Of course, the dust collection! Germans like me and the Festo designers are really diligent!.
4:55 Your attitude from before would keep me from subscribing. Your acknowledgment of other possibilities and your desire to expand your capabilities, will make me a subscriber. Well done young man! Keep it coming. 👍
Thanks for the great video. Colliflower makes a great zero clearance insert for that saw. I got one this year and can't believe how nice it is.
Welcome to the Festool family. I know I once said I would never own Festool. But once you buy one, you get hooked.
"Im pretty much...gonna move" That made me laugh.
My dws780 stays at my house now
I wouldn’t be surprised if I see a SawStop table saw in your garage soon 😂
I also built a extension and shed out of reach of main power
you've finally seen the light, I switched in 2017 from all dealt due to their power performance to all festool couldn't be happier
Hilton will listen to customer
request unlike Milwaukee.
If you take a look at the end of your right side extension table there is another pull out extension for longer pieces. 👍
Finish carpenter here myself. I'm from Fort Worth also. Just found your channel. Great craftsmanship Richard. Great videos too.
I'm glad you are successful enough to afford Festool.
A carpenter rolling up in a tall Mercedes Sprinter full of Festool... Very unlikely they don't deserve it.
2:20 "Cease to exist" 😆 That's a bit harsh. How about a 'cease and desist' ?
I'm still gonna wear it! 😆 🤣
They have to send cease and desist to protect copyright logo
Your right. They would never use.
If it's what you need to move your work to the next level, then enjoy.
Are you all so concidering getting the new FESTOOL cordless table saw
I'm telling it seems sweet to have it
The most common mitre saw I see on building sites in Ireland is Dewalt, Festool is closing the gap though.
If you’re gonna go full Euro, gonna need to go metric too! 😂
Ahh man that would be hard to do at this point!
One millimetre at a time lol
@@FinishCarpentryTVMetric is a game changer.
It’s just a meter of time 🧐😆
Metric is so much easier to use.
What about the Makita set-uP ? With the matching makita blue window casing ?!🥺
Congratulations on your new saw!!
That green kool-aid is gaining more traction in the US all the time!
My son in law has one of those miter saws. He has a track saw as well. Awesome!
