I think the time constraints were too low. Something of this magnitude, if you REALLY want to get creative with it AND be able to finish... Should be done over 2 days, perhaps 2, 4-6 hour sessions. Maybe 20 minute breaks half way through to eat and drink. You need time to think in order to properly design freestyle. It will end up creating much nicer and unique pieces. The finishing aspect is a large part of wood working and there's never enough time to even try sanding, etc.
on Avery's I would have lined the 6x6 on top right over the post so there could be a 45-degree support in both directions. I believe that would have made it strong in both directions... Or I
I'd love to se your design made with 6x6 for every board instead of the 2x6, and then cap the whole top off with 2x2 4 inches on center across the top and down the back.
Can we take a second to appreciate that Wood bully put together TV worthy quality competition challenge content likely for 1/100th if the budget and crew those TV shows have.
2nd video I’ve watched on this channel and really enjoying the friendly competition & creativity so far. Definitely a much needed break from normal woodworking channels 👍
Good on ya Bully, way to take the loss like a champ. While I did personally prefer Avery's design, I can appreciate the unique approach you chose as well as the quality of work you both managed to put out in such a short amount of time. This series even after just two videos is fantastic, be sure to keep em coming.
Love the channel. My one gripe is the editing. Much like Chopped it's meant to create anxiety by splicing in clips of hurried movement and a timer winding down. Some of us would rather see it chronologically with no filler. 👍
Agreed. Also, the music is annoying after a while. All together, it seems like a show that one would see on TV--but if I wanted that, I'd be watching TV, not TH-cam. :)
I would love to see one of these vs a "forgotten more than you'll ever know" type old head. My great uncle has built so many houses from the foundation up that basically any challenge would just be something he's already done on that same time frame dozens of times. I think everyone has an uncle like that, and I'd love to see them represented.
Something that would take these videos to the next level and add some content would be a breakdown of the features used and a breakdown of the builds of how you would do it differently. An in-depth 10 minute video would help coach a LOT of people. The entertainment is awesome - I would love 1 or 2 key takeaways. In addition, I would love to see people do a little more of an intro of who they work with etc so they can do a little more advertising of their business if they win.
This was really fun to watch! I agree with the judges as well. Gord's just didn't look like a pergola should, and as the judges stated, a pergolas job is to partially block out the sun somewhat, ad Gord's just didn't do that from what I could see.
I would have liked if you had more shots of the pergolas panned out. If the whole picture of the projects was shown fairly for the viewers to see, then I must have blinked.
If I ever get time and you're still doing these or just want to do a build off for fun I will absolutely come up there and give it a shot. I'll be prepared and come to win of course but mostly just for the heck of it. These are great videos.
I agree on the winner selection, I did not think as a consumer the fancy pergola was functional and I would not buy. Thank you this challenge was fun to watch.
Going off what you said at the end "I'd use a few more fasteners, more wood, and a lot more time"... perhaps after the judging, give yourselves a few hours to fix those mistakes, add some design, a bit more wood, and whatever else. Then follow up with 10 min of footage of how it "would have" turned out if given the chance. Might be a cool add to the video on something like this. Perhaps not so much on the 4x4 deck and stairs, but with this, yes I'd love to watch more on how each person would have finished (if given more time, material, and thought).
1. Curtain or some kind of visual separation between the two projects so you don’t see each other’s work until the end of the competition. 2. More shots of the project panned out 3. More time so we can see finishing touches. Enjoyed your video challenges. Just subscribed. Thanks!
Not close at all, gords just looks completely unfinished, looks as if they’re waiting on materials to finish the back wall. Creative design but completely missed the mark for sure
I thought the back wall looked like an interior stud wall. And I did not like the mitered corners. There’s a reason traditional design stick around for a long time because they look and function great.
Incredibly impressed with the quality of the video, audio mixing aside. It felt like I was watching something from Amazon/Hulu/Netflix with the production quality and pacing. Now if I could just get the design docs for that guest pergola so I can slap it in my backyard, that would be great ;)
My experience with outdoor builds coming from the northwest and building with cedar all my designs are based on but cuts with some kind of celebration of end details, much like craftsmen style. I also use kiln dried materials that have been pre finished and cuts finished as build progresses. Nice video!
Subbed for these videos. Going to check out your others but I’m loving the challenge aspect. Very very cool stuff. My wife loves watching cook offs but I found my favorite type 😅😅
I was very scared that the judges were about to give it to the bully and I feel like that would have been 100% wrong. I would love to have anything from either of them in my yard, but quite honestly the bully didn't just get beat in this one, he got smoked. Everything from design to execution was better on the guest's. The back wall on the bully's just looked like a stud wall that was waiting for sheetrock. There was nothing about that design that was appealing. I did like the front header on the bully's better, but like the judges said it did need some dressing up. This is only my second episode and I am really liking the series. The first one I watched was the deck landing and stairs. On that one the bully was definitely the winner. I would love to see about 1 additional hour in all of the challenges. I understand being pressed for time makes for good content, but you can still edit it to make it look stressful and that additional hour would make a huge difference in the final product.
Digging the series and you got good sportsmanship Wood bully. I've been a Carpenter 15 years and these are definitely crazy timelines for what you guys are producing!! Mad props, I'd be at least a day, probably 2, to accomplish averys purgala and would have never thought of anything like yours pretty creative man. Keep on bullying sir.
My second comment on this channel 😂 I do like it and no disrespect at all!! I’ve built a thousand pergolas actually got hired to build them for Lowe’s all over Texas and their design was trash that they wanted but I honestly think there’s a big difference in a framer and other things I do it all decks patios a ton of fences over 5000 jobs in Austin but these are the weirdest looking pergolas I’ve ever seen we do 10x16 in 4 hours by meaning we me and a guy. Not dogging man not trying to but I would definitely do a pergola challenge w you any day of the week.never seen 45s on top like that I do notch my posts love your videos man no disrespect at all I’m just fast or can you do a fence challenge I’d love that😂 please lmk on that. Rock dirt solid concrete anything I’ll bring my tools? It’s my first year so be easy lol 😂..
I would love to see a full modern design. Basically complete the thought. But that back wall looked like fire blocking to me and was super distracting to my eye. Would you leave that as-is in a full design?
If I was ten years younger, I totally would love to challenge you, great builds, but the judges were right. Yours wouldn’t stand the test of time, maybe incorporate steel tubes in the top and side, painted black?
Hey Wood Bully!! I just found your channel. I must say it is quite enjoyable. I grew up around a bunch of bullies. You are the nicest bully I have watched to date. Toughen up cupcake! Great idea!! You got me hooked! I subscribed!!
I live in Saskatchewan, I was on the Handyman Challenge years ago and lost pretty badly lol pay my flights and I’ll build any outdoor structure. Just don’t get Scott McGillivry to be the judge!
These are fun to watch. If I’d say one thing. I watched the other video. If you spread the challenges like this out in your feed, I’d probably watch more of them. I watch too much TH-cam. This is just something I noticed when I went to your channel. I think if you spread these out between other uploads you may drive more traffic. What do I know though? Just telling you what it felt like when I went to check out the channel haha
Avery's build was hand's down a winner, Bully's was ok but missed the mark on design being compromised with lateral support across the top and termination of the vertical timbers at the front, Avery's looks more traditional / timeless design and without all those mitres will still look great in years to come.
Both of you did very well I’m quite astonished with both of your products. Also l’ve enjoyed very well watching every sec in both 1st and 2nd challenges. Great job both of you. Last but not the least we would love to watch more challenges videos like this in coming days. Immensely waiting . Lots of love from india Nagaland ❤
Here’s some in put on your already good idea for the show … you should just go to a neighborhood where it looks like they need help with a new deck or replacing the deck and just see who builds the best one but make sure there’s two houses side by each so u can do one and they can do one on the other side ..
i like those video alot keep them coming! A note if i may, show the whole finish preduct more! when they judge we can't really see what they are talking about or it too zoomed in to understand. good video eitehr way.
woody love the series watch it like 5 times. don't stop making videos market yourself! i would like to challenge you to a computer build think about it. the world wasn't build in one day. lol
The guest carpenter looks like Alex Volkanovski, I know alot of people don’t know who that is but he is a champion in the UFC. Maybe this guy can win this match.

I thought more about your design, I think you could have got the same look with half-lapped joints instead of miters. could improve the life.
Love this new series!! Such a fun way to challenge the keyboard warriors 😂
The guests skill was SUPER impressive
He's a pro who trained with a pro. Best way to learn. Apprentice then experience.
I worked on a site where Avery and his crew were also on and they are a great bunch and hard working. 613 carpentry is incredible.
Can we take a second to appreciate that Wood bully put together TV worthy quality competition challenge content likely for 1/100th if the budget and crew those TV shows have.
Note to the mixer: turn the music down. A lot of times I couldn’t understand what they were saying.
Note taken
Came here to say this
Came just for that as well! Great editing but when they’re talking tone the background music a few notches
These "VS" videos are a lot of fun. I think you're onto something here. I'll watch. Thanks.
More in the works!
@@woodbullyltd Any update?
@@woodbullyltd When?
Nothing in the works 😅
I am so glad I found this Bully guys channel! This is probably the greatest “face-off” series or the idea of it ever!
Construction Olympics is an even better idea
Great sportsmanship on the wood bully’s part agreeing with the judges
Excellent video. I’m very impressed by Avery. Oddly enough I like his design more. But then again, I love simplicity
That’s because it looked way better .
@@joebly5641 I thought so
Sometimes a simple design is hard to beat. Especially if it's done with finesse.
yeah the other one is unique but it looked like a framed wall with blocking
Definitely looked better and was more functional.
2nd video I’ve watched on this channel and really enjoying the friendly competition & creativity so far. Definitely a much needed break from normal woodworking channels 👍
Glad to have you here! More episodes are in the works

The worst part about this video is now my girlfriend is asking if I can build a pergola like Avery’s in a few hours. Thanks guys. 😂
I would love to see one of these vs a "forgotten more than you'll ever know" type old head. My great uncle has built so many houses from the foundation up that basically any challenge would just be something he's already done on that same time frame dozens of times. I think everyone has an uncle like that, and I'd love to see them represented.
I already forgot things you haven’t learned yet.😂😂😂😂

“Kyle forgot to remind me” 😂
Hes always doing that.
Good ol throwing someone else under the bus 😂
Are you even a foreman if you don’t say these types of things 😂😂😂
Damn man I wish there was more stuff out like this, the VS is a sick idea. Keep it up brother 🔥
It was good it teaches others not to be scared to build stuff.
Good on you for that part.
And showing some extra techniques.
Cheers 🍻
I respect the speed you build the pergolas, there’s a lot to learn
🙏

Agreed. Could barely take in the designs.
One looks like a pergola the other looks like he’s framing a shed!
Do more of these challenges if you can Wood Bully. I know it’s easier said than done, but if you can would definitely tune in.
Theses challenges are a lot fun to watch. Please more of this.
Avery is a master craftsman!!
This series needs to continue
We are starting to film a full season next month
If I ever get time and you're still doing these or just want to do a build off for fun I will absolutely come up there and give it a shot. I'll be prepared and come to win of course but mostly just for the heck of it. These are great videos.
Love the competition series !
What a great idea !!Thanks
Thank you!
Needs to be once a month, so 12 vids a year, the deck one was great, keep this up!
Amazing, all from scratch in three hours. I can’t even get my truck inspection done in that time!

When people are talking, TURN DOWN THE MUSIC
@@ninetytwo6397 I was thinking the same thing - this looks like the open stud wall of a 1950's detached garage of a house I once owned.
There's beauty in simplicity wood bully definitely lost that round he gets an e for effort and a c for creativity and an l for looser this time

I suck at working with wood so this is really fascinating to see.
Please do more of these kind of videos love them
Awesome content. Reminds me of early Forged im fire. Carpentry is a lot more relatable though.
The second pergola back wall looks like they’re ready for the electrician to run wire, then drywall.

Great content!
Definitely!
That back wall of Gords looks like my unfinished/Sheetrock garage walls
i think the judge in the black hat made the overall right decision but he isn't very familiar with structural design, but definitely 2 great builds.
I have watched several episodes and like the way the bully loses. a very skilled class act
🍻
Bryan really got yo ass stretching 🫠🙃😉🤐 great show!
Great video, but why put such time constraints and not give it 6hours? I don't get it
We want more build offs!!!!
They’re on the way!
Kyle didn’t forget it was you
😳
Agreed 🤣🤣
Great video. I’d suggest making them around 50 minutes and a little more detailed, but this was awesome bully
🤙
not to be that guy thinking about monetization and viewer retention, but Patreon with longer uncut videos probably makes more sense on both counts.
I would love to see a full modern design. Basically complete the thought. But that back wall looked like fire blocking to me and was super distracting to my eye. Would you leave that as-is in a full design?

I liked the traditional one in every aspect. The design of the other looked very. . . . emaciated.
Really enjoying the last couple videos put out 💯 if I did this challenge in 3 hours it might not have gotten done🤣
Great to hear! Definitely not enough time to build something like this.
I am loving this series , Gord i would love to challenge but i happen to be the slowest woodworker on the planet , keep up the great work
This makes me want to try build a pergola. Which would be a stupid idea because I have no idea what I am doing

I think if you spread these out between other uploads you may drive more traffic.
What do I know though? Just telling you what it felt like when I went to check out the channel haha
Future episodes will be spread out for sure
You can almost always tell a good carpenter by his toll bags. If a guy has Occidental bags that are well used I’ll usually trust him
There has to be a rematch!!!
Avery's build was hand's down a winner, Bully's was ok but missed the mark on design being compromised with lateral support across the top and termination of the vertical timbers at the front, Avery's looks more traditional / timeless design and without all those mitres will still look great in years to come.

23:55 what a nice boss teaching him how to K.I.S.S
I’ve never understood the fascination with pergolas.
Digging the jams on this video..
what do y’all do with the structures?
I agree that the one pergola did not provide much shade. Also the climbing risk.
Hahahaha the speech before the loss was the real bully move
No kidding lol
Guest wins hands down
woody love the series watch it like 5 times. don't stop making videos market yourself! i would like to challenge you to a computer build think about it. the world wasn't build in one day. lol
Nice!
Anyone knows any kind of wood working cometition show. Or steel... someting in this genre.
Really enjoyed this.
This is the one
Need more competition episodes
More on the way
The guest carpenter looks like Alex Volkanovski, I know alot of people don’t know who that is but he is a champion in the UFC. Maybe this guy can win this match.
Is it not him?
Side to same side = center to center 🔨
This is an old video reposted. Was this a mistake?
No. Just retooling the series
