the most important thing for me that gave the original track so much athmosphere was the miis looking at you drive and the soundscape. When youre driving through the track in 8 Deluxe its just the song in the brackground, but driving through it on the Wii, you heard People talking when youre in the Mall and you heard the cars making sounds outside of it in the Background. This sort of audio is so important for making the Tracks feel alive.
Thanks for pointing this out! This kind of environmental sound design is often overlooked, but very important. Shy Guy Falls wouldn't be the same without the singing Shy Guys you drive past.
That's what made Mario Kart Wii such a masterpiece was the small details for environment sound cues to make it feel almost realistic. One of my favorites would have to be Moonview Highway where as soon as you enter the city area, sounds of the city take place. Police and ambulance sirens, air planes next to an airport and much much more
It sucks that Nintendo decided to go the cheap route and give us the Tour version in the Booster Course Pack. This video did a fantastic job at showcasing what we are missing out on, it looks great!
Coconut Mall will always be open. The Mushroom Kingdom don’t really have internet in the conventional sense, so most residents would need shopping centres to get what they need.
Oh my God this is exactly how I remembered coconut mall. All it needs is a high quality version of the wii's music and crowd sound effects. I cannot wait for someone to mod this in and I truly hope you find the time to remake all of the tracks in the booster pass!
I see you're trying a track that's already in MK8DX this time, nice. You could just apply new textures and lighting, but I know you'll go above and beyond for this project.

Wow he did it again. This definitely looks way better than the BCP version. Although I'm not quite sure how I feel about the blue aesthetic on the outside of the building. Give me more of a public pool or spa vibe 😅 But besides that little detail, everything looks like what the original Wii one could've been. Excited to see who's gonna be the quick one to implement it into the game, so we can see how it feels like playing it.
Something I thought of with the clothing stores, in Splatoon 3 you can customize a locker. The shirts put in are on a hanger, so that could be used if you could find the models. Also, some hats are on head models, which could also be used.
MAAAAAAN! I kinda wish this is what the BCP version looked like. This is genuinely so cool, and I like how faithful you tried to make this to the original.
35:51 that's because of the normals, if you go to Edit Mode and do Alt + N > Set from Faces it will fix it. generally it bugs out whenever you join because it gets the normals from the other object, and might fuck up other meshes like here
That could work, but it's not the best solution. Set from Faces aggressively sets normals to average of surrounding selected normals, so it's highly biased towards smoothness and doesn't work well on models that have smooth and sharp edges. If you want a true reset of normals back to their default state, use reset vectors instead.
@iminumst7827 mk8/tour models on import have seperated edges when it's supposed to be a sharp edge, so unless you merged by distance (which I don't think he did, or at least he didn't mention it), it will roughly give out the same result, but I forgot one thing is that you can also do Alt + N > Average > Face Area which is how mk8 recalculates their normals for every mesh in the game, iirc tour/bcp does it differently so actually this is the best solution to make it fit even more with 8's base game
I like to imagine that because people had so much fun racing and watching those races through the mall, that they shut down the actual mall part, and it’s just a race track now. Which would explain the removed escalators, the different half pipe stair things, and all of the shops being empty. This bit of head lore makes the bcp version _slightly_ more acceptable.
The amount of effort and dedication you put into this rendition of Wii Coconut Mall is astounding, especially when you put the ivy on top of the halls. You should really do Wii DK Summit next.

I think my main issue with the BCP Coconut Mall was that it felt dead. Because none of the MK8 tracks have Miis in the audience, there were no crowds on the balconies or in the shops watching. Guess it must’ve been Tuesday at the mall

Great job on fixing Mario Kart 8's Coconut Mall! While I'm not a fan of the default text for Delfino Dream, it doesn't detract from the overall fantastic work you've done on the project. Keep up the good work!
I think one issue I personally had with the Booster Course version of CM... was the sign at the front of the store. The font and everything's fine, and honestly I love the way you made it all 3D in this new model... but it does _not_ look right to have a cool Purple text on an also-cool Cyan backing! I've made of an edit of the sign already, where the Purple is replaced by a warmer Yellow colour... and honestly, not only does it look better than the Booster Course version of the sign, but it also gave me a vibe closer to the original sign! So yeah! I think that's only real change I would make to this model! Everything else looks _super_ good, and a vast improvement over the Booster Course version! I loved watching you create all the stores, because yeah! It felt like you were actually passionate and wanted to create something that actually exists in this universe! Which is something that I _loved_ with the MK8 tracks, and something that I always felt was missing with the Booster Course tracks. So yeah, overall? Wonderful work on this!
I absolutely loved watching this because I could tell how much passion went into this. The dedication is crazy, and it works so well in the end, because you *get it.* You get what it felt like to race through the original coconut mall. And you were able to replicate that really well :)
So, there is a feature called 'tris to quads' that you can use in edit mode. It could have made some of your unwrapping work a little less extremely horrible.
All sorts of TH-camrs get comments like "Why aren't you already working for Nintendo?". Well, my good sir, you have truly earned that comment. Your work is of great quality. You would be at home with any game development team.
I actually don't mind the Tour/8DX version as much as other people, however your version undeniably blows it out of the water. Even the original in some areas. All the texture work, as well as little details like the shops and flowers, really give this track more character (which was kinda lacking in the 8DX original).
With the auto smooth issues: the way it makes some faces flat is by automatically marking edges as being sharp. To undo this, go into edit mode, then edge selection mode, select any cyan edges that are supposed to be smooth, right click or Ctrl+E and select "clear sharp"
Your channel is straight up a gold mine for me, also a 3D artist and I love this sort of stuff but no one else seems to be doing it, or at least making these kinds of polished videos on it.
ok charlie look i love the effort that went into this and it looks really really cool but change the delfino dream sign PLEASE!!!! putting aside the blatant usage of the default blender font (you can select different ones!!), using booleans like this is really unoptimized and i feel it'd function much better if the letters were just conveyed as a normal map lol
I know its to late for this video, but hopefully this helps in the future. If you go into Edit mode, select all of the faces you want to reset, hit "Mesh" at the top, go to "Normals" and hit "Reset Normals" and Blender will recalculate the normals for the mesh. The one downside is that it also automatically updates (and locks) auto smooth settings, but you can remove that by going to the "Geometry Data" in the Object Data Properties and click "Clear Custom Split Normals Data."
Doing gods work out here 😭 This is honestly incredible beyond belief!! Amazing work 🙌🏻 if you choose to do another I would nominate maple Treeway cause my fav wii tracks (coconut mall too) got slaughtered in the bcp and it’s so sad!
If I were a woman, this right here is how a guy would win my heart I never liked the fact that they watered down the Wii maps with the pretty bland Tour ones, so I'm glad to see this
The lack of ambient occlusion textures pained me, because those can make any texture that is not flat look HD even if it's from the wii era. I've literally grabbed textures from PS1 games and added AO textures to fantastic results. You simply multiply the AO texture with the color texture and it just looks so nice~ 2nd tip: Photoshop has an offset filter that lets you move textures like they are patterns, this means you can ofset the texture so the broken seams lie in the center, and then you can fix them up without issue.
I just started messing with ambient occlusion after reading your comment and yeah I wish I used it in this Coconut Mall project. It really adds a grounded sense of space to the scene! Thank you! (I'll also keep the offset filter in mind next time I'm trying to do something like that).
As somebody who absolutely DESPISES MK8DX's Coconut Mall, you did a very good job and it brings back the feeling I had when I used to boot up my Wii just to play a 16 track GP of just Coconut Mall. Thank you
Still watching the video; you should merge vertices by distance. This will make selecting linked way easier, and then once you do that you can convert triangles to quads which is way easier to uv unwrap and add more detail to the geometry. Finally, id suggest being more liberal in replacing chunks of the model. Some tour models are absurdly inefficient or just look bad, like the rocks, so remaking them probably wouldve been better than reunwrapping the icosphere they used. Edit: i think merging vertices by distance would also fix the weird shading issues you were having
Haven’t even finished the video yet but I can already tell the quality the course will reach but if each course really was receiving this intricate care if not moreso than I would have been so much happier with the Booster Course Pass and if they increased it to $30 that’s perfectly fine
You should try and get in contact with the guys making CTGP Deluxe for mario kart 8 deluxe and maybe the custom version could be implemented into the game as a replacement for the original, or as an option.
4:58 about those normal map generations... For some textures, you should generate the normal map *before* adding any irregularities to it, what ended up happening is that the tint on the texture affected the normal maps, and not just the squares themselves.
What an improvement! Nintendo needs to hire you for your effort in these tracks. Shows clearly how the developers could have easily put more effort than just texturing the tour models. Good Job on the overall.
As an expert in Photoshop, Blender, and Texturing, your work process was hilarious. And your work ethic, attention to detail, and resourcefulness were inspiring. Great video. You should be proud, cause when Nintendo shoved mobile textures onto one of Nintendo's most visually impressive games, my texturer-side was furious. 36:27 In Blender (and rendering in general) every face has a "normal" which basically tells the light which direction the face is facing and which side of that face is the outside of the mesh. Normals are defined in the mesh not the material. If you ever encounter an issue like this again where a model just has the wrong shading, it's probably a normals problem, and there is a way to reset normals. In Blender, select all faces, then Mesh -> Normals -> Reset Vectors.
It sucks because it's a direct tour port. A lot of the booster course nitro's or adjusted tracks look akin the the base game. One positive of the remake is how colorful it is
I do what I call lazy mirroring on my mods: select 5 pixels width of an edge, duplicate, flip, paste on top of texture on the opposite side. Do the same for the bottom or the top side of the texture. Use liquify tool to ease any weird transitions and hide the obvious flip, then bam, lazy tiling that's okay for textures that aren't stared at in detail.
When you had that issue with the shading, it would likely be fixed by clicking the object, go to the green triangle tab in the bottom right, open Normals, and “Clear Custom Split Normals.” I’ve had a lot of imported models have weird shading issues for literally no reason, and then that button fixed it immediately
i am glad the vis is so detailed, i am oretty new to blender and people sometimes just say what they do but not what buttons they press. also the normal map thing is interesting, when modding textures i usually left that alone cuz idk what that does
the most important thing for me that gave the original track so much athmosphere was the miis looking at you drive and the soundscape. When youre driving through the track in 8 Deluxe its just the song in the brackground, but driving through it on the Wii, you heard People talking when youre in the Mall and you heard the cars making sounds outside of it in the Background.
Haven’t even finished the video yet but I can already tell the quality the course will reach but if each course really was receiving this intricate care if not moreso than I would have been so much happier with the Booster Course Pass and if they increased it to $30 that’s perfectly fine
btw you can just select a (everything) --> m (combine verts) --> by Distance to get rid of the separated floor parts
Good Job on the overall.
this looks soo cool! wish we could see what it looks like in-game
22:07 as a 3D artist myself that line just cracked me up XD so relatable lol
Nintendo fans do what NintenDON’T this is amazing!!! This is genuinely a work of art, props to you 👏🏼
It sucks because it's a direct tour port. A lot of the booster course nitro's or adjusted tracks look akin the the base game. One positive of the remake is how colorful it is
R.I.P. Chesse grater floors, you will be missed
I literally just ranted about this track on my own channel! What a coincidence
Well done! You did a great job on revamping the track.
A channel called JimBoat also remade the coconut mall track!
I do what I call lazy mirroring on my mods: select 5 pixels width of an edge, duplicate, flip, paste on top of texture on the opposite side. Do the same for the bottom or the top side of the texture. Use liquify tool to ease any weird transitions and hide the obvious flip, then bam, lazy tiling that's okay for textures that aren't stared at in detail.
... lazy tiling, not lazy mirroring. You said the wprd when i was typing 😆
When you had that issue with the shading, it would likely be fixed by clicking the object, go to the green triangle tab in the bottom right, open Normals, and “Clear Custom Split Normals.”
I’ve had a lot of imported models have weird shading issues for literally no reason, and then that button fixed it immediately
I hope someone mods this to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe because I would love to be able to play this updated version.
I applaud your willpower and creativity
This had to be done!
i am glad the vis is so detailed, i am oretty new to blender and people sometimes just say what they do but not what buttons they press.
also the normal map thing is interesting, when modding textures i usually left that alone cuz idk what that does
12:22 This sentence sums up most of texture work lol
I loved this video so much! The nostalgia is crazy.
That's actualy crazy how 1 person is more capable than a nintendo team☠️
Is that why Nintendo angry?
