In my country, Canada, at school, music lessons are limited to playing beige plastic flute. But in Japan, music lessons at school are serious: guitar, bass, drum, violin, and a whole bunch of instruments. And after school the young Japanese gather at Karaoke to take turns singing. So it's no surprise that thousands of bands are swarming in the dark concert halls throughout Japan.
Fellow Canadian here and I couldn’t agree more, Highschool music programs aren’t even enough to meet the minimum requirements for University music programs and private (expensive) lesson are required and it’s really sad because I see a lot of lost talent because of this.
I am very happy that you got to experience the live version of Black Pentagram. I believe this live video is much better than the official music video. Jill on the violin is simply amazing when she cuts loose. The drummer is a beast that always impresses me. The guitarists are world class (although not Lovebites level). Even with all that talent, if I ever get the chance to see them live, I am not sure I would be able to take my eyes off of Fuki. If you want to see another live video of Jill cutting loose, you have to watch her cover EVH's Eruption. In the video is also a cover of Dream Theater's The Dance of Eternity. Four members of Unlucky Morpheus - Jill, Fumiya (drums), Ogawa (bass) and Jinya (guitar) - have an instrumental side project called Quadratum (which unfortunately means no Fuki). I'm a child of the early 1960s, so my musical education is from the 1970s and '80s, and, retrospectively, the '60s. So, some of the most phenomenal popular music ever released. When I discovered Unlucky Morpheus in 2021 (thank you, Covid lockdowns!), I instantly felt they were an amazing band -- probably the best I'd come across in over 20 years. Personally I think they're one of the best live bands in the world. The music is outstanding. Fuki not only has a great voice but a real stage presence -- she reminds me of old-time music hall performers with how she interacts with the audience. Shiren and Jinya are excellent complementary guitarists. Ogawa is an excellent jazz bassist. Fumiya is a beast on the drums, but also has a wide range of styles, including jazz. And then there's the cherry on top, their virtuoso violinist, Jill. Her playing adds the "it" factor that completes their sound. If I could see only one band perform live it would be UM. Definitely check out the cover of Eruption and Dance of Eternity. It provides a glimpse of Ogawa's prowess on the bass that otherwise doesn't come through on most UM songs, and also showcases a different style for Fumiya on drums.
The reason why the violin solo sounds like something you'd play on a guitar, is because it was written and originally played by the guitar. Shiren used to play it, but after his wrist injury he used to take a rest when they played this live and Jill took over his part. Now he is play more she has kept that part of the solo. Well, the violin and guitar are actually much more similar than you might think. The four strings of a violin are the same as the first four on the guitar, just in reverse order; G D A E vs. E A D G. The style of that solo is Neo-Classical and to me, it's the opposite; While yes, the solo was originally written for guitar, it works extremely well on violin because it was written in a style that is reminiscent of Baroque era orchestral string music a la Vivaldi of Bach. Really in many, many ways, Classical/Baroque music and metal are so very similar compared to other modern pop music. That's way they work so well together.
Being someone who has studied music for years as well as schooling like music theory and music history I have found that there is a lot of metal today that shares more then just similarities with orchestral music. A lot of these bands are writing compositions that could be performed by an orchestra and in a lot of cases have done so. The writing shares the same format so to speak so when you bring a lot of these elements into the music it fits in and is right at home
@@TheKillogicEffect Absolutely. I'm both a metal guitarist and orchestral composer myself and been playing music since about age 11. Actually my all-time favorite band is Versailles, also from Japan. I think they are the best Neo-Classical metal band out there. I don't think I've ever heard a band with as complex songwriting for a metal band, except maybe Tool, but they write very much in a classical sense with lots of key changes and complex harmonies and melodic themes. It's too bad that more people don't check them out, many seen to not get past either their thematic French Rococo style costumes (they are an original visual kei band) or singer Kamijo's very pretty-boy vampire manly voice. If you feel inclined, check out their songs, "Aristocrat's Symphony" or "Ascendead Master" They are two parts of a three-part story line in song/video.
Just an FYI. This was from their encore set. They are all wearing their tour t-shirts over their regular set attires. It's to silently say 'please support us by buying our t-shirts'. Many Japanese bands do this. Oh, and by the way, UM is an unbelievably outrageously talented band and Fuki (v) is probably the best female metal singer from Japan. Yes, I believe she is better than Asami of Lovebites.
