  • Todays project was a Intex Pump that came from my Walmart pool. Ive had the pump for only 2 seasons and it broke. I locate the issue and complete the repair. The motor balancing rod was broken. 1 hour and zero dollars later I saved 90 bucks.

    Mine was a 637R. I couldn't find any diagrams showing how the spindle actually worked. With being able to see your plastic spindle, I was able to take mine apart and insert a metal spindle I made by sawing off a 2 6/8 inch piece of a pants hanger rod. Getting out the botton plastic piece was difficult because mine broke at the base. Using needle nose pliers I took out thre little rubber end with the broken stub still in it. Then I put the rubber end on my metal spindle, and pushed the rubber back into place. Then the impeller on the rod, the top piece with the other rubber cap embedded, and voila! It works again! We can keep our pool, and saved time and money. Thank you!

    Thank you so much for making this video, had the same thing happen to us. Could not even find a new pump to purchase because of shortage at factory. I went to Lowe's and purchased a brass rod that worked excellent. The pump is up and running, and the kids are thrilled .Thanks again

      @@behanner Hi Brent, I used a piece of 1/8"diameter by 3"long, purchased it at Lowe's, item #364221 it comes 6" long, I cut it in half. for the future repair i think I am going to get Stainless steel, 304 or 316 series because I believe it will hold up longer against chlorine. Pump is still running great.

    Thank you very much for the video. I was going to toss mine also and glad I found your video. I also sound a small rod myself in my shed and did the same things as you had performed. Was able to save my motor from being part of a landfill. Much appreciated the video and step by steps. Thanks!

    You saved my sanity. We'd only been using our pump for 2 months and it stopped working. Intex is out of replacement units and parts and won't even answer the phones or emails anymore (maybe due to Covid). I had taken ours apart and didn't even notice the small piece of the broken shaft before viewing your video! You just saved me hundreds of dollars, and many hours of cursing! Thank you thank you!

    I just tore apart two bad units to make a good unit. I did not about the screw on the timer knob. I was able to take apart both units without removing those screws and not break anything.
    Now that I know about the screw, I can finish putting the good unit together.
    Thank you!!!

    Hey WS
    I had taken my pump apart years ago and couldn’t remember how to get that cover off-probably because I never thought about that knob screw. So I searched for quite some time in French, cause that’s where I live and there was nothing. So I checked in English. Enjoyed your video cause you sound just like somebody I went to school with. Well if anybody is reading this and needs that shaft I got one. My problem is that the magnetic shaft rusted and has split open. As a matter of fact the motor will still run for about a second or two when I turn it opposite that split.

    I have the 638rm pump and I replace the broken ceramic shaft with an Allan key from IKEA that I had a bunch laying round... straigten it with a hammer till it was flat, replaced the old and it worked. It was the perfect size too, no need to cut it 👍

    Thanks for making this video!!! The same thing happened to my Intex above ground pool pump. My pump is the smaller one that comes with the 10-foot metal frame pool. I opened it up and took out that magnetized spinner and sure enough, that plastic rod had snapped. It's July 29, 2020, and I started using this pump brand new June 6th of 2020. It didn't even last a season from that standpoint. In mine I ended up using an 8D x 2 1/2" nail cut to size and deburred. I tried looking for something aluminum but couldn't find anything that small and thin. Again, thanks for the informative video.

      Us too. We received ours the first week in June and it died on July 29th. Maybe a batch problem? Glad this video helped you too!

    • @dortizjr1

      So two weeks later the pump stopped working again. The nail I used as a replacement rod was worn down in two spots -top and bottonm - and nearly snapped through in the exact same spot that the original plastic rod was. There are two metal washers, one at the top and bottom of the magnetic spinning thing. I placed them back in with a new rod I cut down but in two weeks if this one also breaks/corrodes I'm going to try running the pump without the washers. The washers are causing that wear on the rods.

    There are a few pieces of infomation that I can offer:
    1. That shaft is made of ceramic, as are the inner bushings of the impeller.
    2. The notch is not a design component, it is how the impeller has worn the shaft.
    3. A metal shaft will work, for a day, a week, a month, but water, chlorine, and the aforementioned ceramic will increase wear.
    4. Lubrication will be washed away within minutes of operating, as the water surrounds the impeller.
    5. Intex does not offer a replacement shaft or impeller that I can find. If someone were to find a proper Fluval (aquarium pump) shaft and impeller for these Intex products, they would be making 1,000's of people happy. The shaft is 1/16" by 3" by my measurements.

    • @angelvr

      Mine lasted a day and a half. Would it help if the new metallic shaft is coated in paint?

    • @cloudconnect
      @cloudconnect 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@angelvr No. I tried 3mm (1/16") knitting needles, which are exactly that, and they wore away within a few hours. The only metals to use are brass (last a few days) and stainless steel and titanium will probably last longer, but I haven't tried them. Welding rod can be found in stainless, so it might be a good option. Its the ceramic that you really need. I think that there may be some 3mm ceramic knitting needles still around that should work, but I can't find any. Fluval 304/305 shaft may be the only hope.

    These ceramic impeller rods seem to be the weak link in Intex pumps. Our Intex PureSpa pump died at 6 months. They sent a replacement unit that lasted a year and one week. I took the unit apart to find a broken ceramic impeller rod. I replaced it with 1/8" brass rod, cut to 3 3/4" iirc.
    Our Intex 10'x30" steel frame pool, is running the 330gph pump. It has stopped working on its second season. It had the same issue with broken ceramic impeller rod; but this one was less than 1/8" diameter. I've used a clothes hanger rod (cut to 2in.) for the time being; but will keep searching for a source of replacement rods. In either ceramic, or possibly stainless/titanium.

    Thanks a bunch! I have the smaller pump (model 603) and the inner design is nearly identical. The shaft is smaller though. I was going to use a clothes hanger as the shaft but my neighbor had a stainless welding rod so I cut it to length. It sounds terrible but maybe it'll last through the summer.

    Got this pump type for free today.
    Checked the transformer voltage which is 14 V (AC).
    Cleaned the pump housing as there was slight dirt but just to be sure.
    The shaft is not broken.
    But the pump runs 'unstable' seems that sound wise 'stops' and continues.
    Don't have a pool to really test if it pumps with any power.
    But would appreciate some feedback what the 'stops' can cause.
    TIA

    Great video, I have the exact pump and expect the same issue. Only took part of it apart and the impeller rocks like yours did. Unfortunately, the screws for the cover also spin the bolt underneath that is inserted in the plastic so i can tell until I get them out (if anyone has any ideas on that). Good fix, however, hopefully, I'll have the same luck. Did it last? Thanks Neil

    I'm at my second Intex pump - smaller than that one, exact same design, that plastic shaft broken in both after a few months. At this point I believe its intentionally build to fail and break after a while... In the first one I glued back the shaft, but eventually the spinning rotor (the one with the propeller attached and the magnet that) became cracked and started to bulged so... obviously completely stuck. Almost impossible to just buy the part, so I guess the plan is to have you buy a new pump every 1-2 years?
    Still, this is a good fix for until the rotor itself breaks ^^ If you can find them, buy spare rotors and shafts...

Well that has problems so I cry not knowing what to do but I know what was wrong with the little pump same as you..I have the same stupid sign in my yard I just yanked er up. I'm going out to skip re installer n plug n swim..I have faith that we are good to go. My question is the little rubber gasket I found in the bottom were did it come from it looked like it belongs in gonna wrong it n see.. I'll be back with update in free minutes..lol 90 sec but I'm jumping in clouds n all

    Use brass for a replacement rod. Brass will not heat up like the other metal options and will not effect the water and chemicals. I found mine at the local hardware store for like $3 bucks and i was able to make 3 rods out of it. Also, don’t put grooves in it, the grooves are not supposed to be there. The impeller shaft should not have grooves. The grooves are what happens when it starts to wear down or wobble out.

    • @CookNComedy
      @CookNComedy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      do you remember the diameter of the brass?

    • @hollylarson4510
      @hollylarson4510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CookNComedy i do remember the diameter. For our pump it was 1/8” and that worked on the sfx 600, 1000 and 1500 pumps. Also, I collected some old pumps ppl in my town put on the curb and took them apart and if the shaft and impeller were in good condition i saved them. So I have several back ups now just in case :)
