Envisioning Aliens: Is the Kardashev Scale Obsolete?

  • An exploration of whether the venerable Kardashev scale is obsolete. Used since 1965 to envision both the far human future and alien civilizations, the scale is a product of its times and may be superseded by one of several alternative methods of classifying futurism and technological alien life.

      It's a terrible idea, in reality. Extremely low quality, and deeply flawed on many levels. Dumber than a Hyperloop, even!
      Because imagining that advanced civilisations would rely on solar power is flat out wrong. It's functionally the same as people in 1800 thinking that in the year 10,000 everything will run on coal. Or whale oil.
      Here's the rule about Dyson Spheres: IF YOU CAN BUILD A DYSON SPHERE, YOU DON'T NEED A DYSON SPHERE.

    It's all very much influenced by the time we live in. In Kardashev's time it was all about energy, but now someone may make a scale based on how much information is processed. What's next, a scale based on how many (and the types of) A.I.s a civilization is running?

    • @KlaasDeforche
      @KlaasDeforche 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hmm maybe. A super intelligent AI that is light-years away is probably not very useful though :)
      My point was only that the way we think about more advanced civilizations is very much influenced by how "advanced" we currently are.
      That is also the message of the video I guess :).

      I'm good! I just have a lot of ideas and material to work with right now. That's usually the bottleneck because otherwise I really enjoy making videos. I'd do it every day if I had the material and was able keep up the quality bar. Right now, I can do it every couple of days, and that's probably going to last through the end of the year, but when good topics become scarce then it will slow back down.

    Fun fact there's a metal band called @kardashev and their first two albums are fully based on a sci-fi story using the scale with humanity at a tier 2 civilization. The album Exipio is a masterpiece with humanity primarily living in dyson spheres being given a progress block and the final song being out ascension to tier 3. They invented a genre called Death Gaze and the atmosphere is incredible.

    Obsolete? It never made sense in the first place. The need to control all that energy belies a civilization's technological advancement into hyper efficiencies past levels of physics unknown to us now, which would make controlling all of the energy of a star system or galaxy unnecessary... not to mention impossible.

    Image a species that has progressed past the need for civilizations or infrastructure? A species that has a semi infinite source of power can move through almost any medium(including rock) and in any gravity well. Has no need for individual expression or legacies. With no limiting space, resources, or life span. This kind of species could be right under our feet, and we would never know it(even harder to prove if people actively hide it too).

    The type one described earlier in this video, the one where they live near their homeworld but left it pristine, pair that with the zoo hypothesis. They could be waiting for the next wave of civilization from their homeworld to join them. This could explain some of the UAP incidents throughout history. Or maybe the ones from our system, out there in trans-neptune orbit came from Mars or Venus instead, but still interested in what Earth might produce.

    John Michael "The Murderous" God-Tier!!! Haha! Keep kicking ass! Your stuff is always thought provoking. You and Isaac Arthur are the two people I like listening to about futurology.

    A great synopsis about Kardashev. I've held the opinion for years that it isn't "the quantity of energy extraction and waste" that determines the sophistication and technical capabilities of a species; it is access to certain technologies that may even reduce their need for noisy low-tech energy exploitation ...
    A civilization that gains access to fusion technology, that replaces rocket-gas-expelation with ionic type propulsion to explore its solar system, that can engineer essential and durable materials without plumbing them from their home planet or orbiting satellites, that can build compute systems that do work from a miniscule size and energy profile -- so, has developed high temperature superconductors -- or that has replaced electron/positron communications with photon/crystalline modalities... A species that has moved beyond its host planet, which it would become more of a caretaker of... ALL OF THESE technologies would indicate to me, an observer outside the civilization, that a species has moved from cataclysm-survivalist to a highly durable species with the capacity to survive even the complete destruction of its home world ... from Type 0 ... to Type 1.
    But an obvious consequence of this evolutionary model is -- that it would become infinitely more difficult for a distant observer to detect the existence of such a species, except perhaps optically, as quantum communications is so discrete a process there is no waste scatter for radio telescopes to pick up. So it may be COMMON for sophisticated species to reach Type 1, but the payoff of this level of sophistication is that it becomes nearly impossible for anybody else to detect it, unless it wishes to be. The Great Silence may simply be evidence of that.
