      You are currently traveling forward through time at the speed of light actually. You are always traveling at the speed of light, everything does. The more you would accelerate to move through space, the less you would move through time, and vice versa.

    If a person could time travel backwards. What happens to all the matter and energy already occupying that space you entered into? Ignoring that you don't just materialize into the side of a mountain, even empty space isn't truly empty. The atoms that constitute you would emerge and collide with atoms (particles of all sizes) in that space. Seems like time traveler would always result in a large explosion of energy as particles instantly collide and occupy the same space with other particles. Could be the cause of big bang events for all we know. Time colliding could be the "singularity" event.

    • @NeovanGoth
      @NeovanGoth ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Even more problematic: The probability to find any of the particles you are made of somewhere in the universe would add up to 200%. This totally would break the Schrödinger equation that is a function of t. It simply can't have two results for the same t.

    • @discardmyfriends

      I think the simple answer is time travel is impossible, it would throw the universe off balance.

    • @avedic
      @avedic ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Well, I think you could hypothesize around that by arguing that you're traveling from point a to point b. You're NOT blinking out in one reality and "popping" into another. But yeah, if you literally had to "pop" into that reality in a discrete quantized way, the issues you raised would be a problem lol. It would probably set off a chain reaction akin to a supernova hyper localized to one small area and expanding outward like an atomic blast. Obviously, all this is conjecture ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @kadewilliams7925
      @kadewilliams7925 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      While its an assumption that there would be any kind of teleporting or popping into existence, even if you did, what would happen on a quantum scale would be what is always happening. The forces that keep atoms from touching are incredibly powerful, and the very act of teleporting would be something happening on the quantum level anyway where stuff pop in and out of existence all the time, particles can teleport and be in two places at once. As Hollywood cool as exploding atoms because the were forced to touch would be, i just don't really see that being an issue with any kind of teleportation i can imagine as being functionally real.

    The challenge with time travel is that it’s not just time, but space. Where earth is , or any city on it, is different at a future time. So you would have to get past the magic of traveling backwards, but additionally overcome traveling distances.

    • @Kelnx
      @Kelnx ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Yep. That's rarely ever discussed in sci-fi depictions of time travel. I think only Dr. Who explicitly states that machine used on the show travels through time AND space to get to wherever they're going. Even then, I do wonder if backwards time travel is possible but travel through space over reasonable time frames is a hard problem that will never have a solution, making the whole idea of going back in time to a specific place completely pointless.

    My favourite form of 'time travel' is where you travel to an almost identical alternate universe that just happens to be X days in the past.
    This would, of course, involve a lot of taste testing of alternate universes by the time traveling device until you find one that fits and even then there could be minor differences that go unnoticed.

Assuming aliens and time travelers will exist, combining both kinds of isolation is even less likely, but someone is guaranteed to have that experience. It could be us.

      I would like to think so. There’s two sides to the story obviously. And I truly love your thinking. But, we are a species that has no clue about even staying on a different planet for over a couple days. Time travel is video right now. We are traveling to a certain path and point in time where JMG had collectively decided to take this information and put it into a concentrated form for us to gobble up. BUT we are (if there is day other things in this universe, ) are the only ones with “the keys” to access this Time Machine of a thang called videos. Even spookier is TH-cam comments. Often times these comments are never spoken outloud. They purely exist on a digital level, so they don’t? But you have stepped into my brain essentially reading my mind. And once again hood a certain key in this world to access this at any given moment. And I was all up in your thoughts I guess? Just a wild perspective on normal everyday things. I dunno.

    I propose the idea of virtual timetravel. The universe might or might not be deterministic, but the outcome of past events is definetly determined. This opens the door to "rewind" time in simulations based on the current state of the universe. With enough data and the right mathematical tools we might some day be able to "visit the past" without causing trouble to our own existence. This might sound boring to people who want to change history but archeologists, historians and biologists would kill for this.

      It may be the same sort of concept/dilema of copying consciousness. Like if you copy your brain into a computer is it you or just a copy. What happens to the old u can u both independently exist if its you?
      I feel backwards of linear backwards time travel would be incredibly paradoxal. Like we may be able to send ourselves back to a version/space in the universe where time is earlier than your initial entry, but once there you could probably never say" return to earth and kill hitler" because of the vast distance and litteral issues of traveling space time to an exact point.
      So maybe if we make it "back" to the past the descions and probability make it unlikely that the past and future even matter to us at that point.....time may be something we evolve out of.

    well think about it.. there’s basically an infinite amount of timelines you could travel back to. for example, i want to travel back to 1993. wouldn’t you have to choose an EXACT time in 1993? what month, what day, what hour, what minute, what second.. etc. If someone wanted to travel to our current time, they would have to choose 2023, October 3, 12:25 (time of writing this comment) AM, and whatever seconds we are at.. and then like it goes into how like there’s basically an infinite amount of numbers in between whole numbers. 1.1, 1.01, 1.001 etc.. that can be translated to microseconds, nanoseconds. So basically it’s a gamble that they choose our EXACT timeline. Odds must be so low..

      There isn’t an infinitesimally small fraction of a second. There IS a smallest possible time (and distance). Think about it this way… When you land on an airport after a flight, there is a scheduled time of arrival. It is not precise into infinity. Regardless of when it lands, it DOES land at some arbitrary point of time. You can reduce it as much as you want but ultimately you DO land. The only trouble is DETERMINING at which “exact” time you land. Is it 7:32:12 pm or 7:32:12.23273639 pm? … does it matter?

    Thank you, John. I think the reason is because the past doesn't exist.
    Everything that exists, only exists now. Conservation of energy/mass requires nothing is left behind.
    However, in the future, there will be a way for you to pseudo-travel back in time; your virtual self will be able to project itself into your own past, or any publicly available past, for a limited time. You won't ever be able to go past your own virtualisation process, or beyond when public virtual records began.
    And of course, as a virtual human you'll always have the ability to suspend yourself for a time, so you can pop back into consciousness every few millennia, and catch up on what's been happening.
    In addition to this, there may well be people who try to simulate the past - and that's the scary scenario, because 2023 is far too interesting to not be a target for simulation... D'OH.

    • @NeovanGoth
      @NeovanGoth ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. The Schrödinger equation is a function of t, means for any value of t, the probability to find you somewhere in the universe always adds up to exactly 100%. That means of you would magically beam for now to yesterday at 12 pm, the probability to find you somewhere in the universe would suddenly jump to 200% yesterday at 12 pm, and jump back to 100% now. This would also mean that yesterday at 12, quantum information would suddenly pop into existence, while now it would disappear, which totally isn't allowed.

Meaning if you wanted to visit that exact size 100x100 square, you would have to be in the exact same spot at exactly that time when you drew it.

    One thought I've had is that whenever time travel to the past is invented, it causes paradoxes that lead to that particular universe collapsing into non-existence. This assumes that there is a multiverse. So any universe where one could exist automatically cannot have backwards time travel, since all universes with backwards time travel cease to exist.

    • @johnathanmartin1504
      @johnathanmartin1504 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That is an interesting possibility. One possibility that I favor is that when you travel back in time, you automatically spawn a new universe, so you can never go back to your original universe once you have time travelled. This would also solve various time travel paradoxes.

    • @SevenSixTwo2012
      @SevenSixTwo2012 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Or perhaps the universe has self-correcting code built in, where it will not allow for certain actions or events that would skew the future in a significant or paradoxical way. In that scenario you could not "delete your grandfather" if you went back in time, because something would happen to prevent it : maybe a tree would fall on your head or you'd get a lighting strike, etc. and you could never complete your mission. A la "Final Destination" style.
      That said, actions or events that would not impact the future significantly or create a paradox could be allowed, since not every action would have a major ripple effect in time.

      @@SevenSixTwo2012 On the contrary. There would be exponential affects because every little thing is interconnected . Everything would change and be altered and the changes would expand outwards in time to whatever the time disturbance came into contact with at any future spacepoint in time. The disturbances might vary in intensity depending on what's affected or the nature of the contact . But any slight change can multiply exponentially certain systems directions in incalculable ways. But basically you're not going back in time unless a future AI can create some kind of ghost images with energy to become visible and make sound energy and alter the direction of matter flow slightly. The past,present, and future are interconnected according to physics ,so time is like a spider web where all spacepoints exist simultaneously. Now that i think about it it might be possible to affect the particles of the future and past by what we do in the present instants as time unfolds. Communication might be more possible than time travel by people which is more likely totally impossible for backwards time travel due to the entropic nature of matter from the big bang slowly evaporating and cooling directionally as time itself. How would we go backwards if our particles are going forwards? Decaying over time. Our very sense of time moving directionally is due to matter moving towards evaporation. We sense time this way because everything we are made from is part of the process where matter is energy according to physics and Einstien. And matter is thusly a form of concentrated energy just as sound and light are forms of energy. Or water cascading off a cliff is energy and used to generate electricity from dams. Since we are all made from energy we experience entropy through the filters of our senses. Which is imperfect but part of our evolution. It might be possible to connect to the past and send information briefly in dreams but without explanations so much through our interconnectedness of past,present,and future particles interactions. If we could do it directly into somebody's mind maybe. But at this stage of evolution our development is far and away lagging by millennia and probably alot longer than that. So we don't know what's possible or what our evolution as a species will reach. We do know we have countless roadblocks all along the way though. And any of those roadblocks could be permanent stoppers to further evolution. Problems can increase in difficulty beyond what this species can handle quite easily at any point in time. Especially with global warming. We could go extinct as a species very quickly all of a sudden at any time to to a number of potential catastrophes. Like a huge asteroid. Or a runaway environmental system being pushed to the brink of elimination. And don't let anybody convince you that governments or world leaders or the wealthiest people know what they're doing and we should simply trust them. That's complete hogwash. What's really happening is you have to obtain knowledge of THE THREE BODY PROBLEM IN PHYSICS. No one is capable of calculating the orbits of three or more bodies like the orbits of planets. The financial system was created by complete morons and propogated by the lineage of morons playing confidence games with unsuspecting babes out of the womb for many centuries of tomfoolery and trickery. Seeing that depends on how intelligent you are. And if you can't figure that out that means something that defines aspects of universal behavior. In it's entirety.

Unknown to this guy (we’ll call him Kevin), his relative was schizophrenic. Kevin was the future guy and John was the current guy. Maybe he was telling the truth and having another mind in your body or telling cops you’re from the future would get diagnosed as a mental illness. Anyway he’s dead now.
