Thank you Debbie, I'm looking at this 3years late, but information is very much still relevant. I've always been a bit afraid of over wintering Cannas, but after watching this video I'm going to give it a go. My Geraniums I over wintered ok for the last two winters using a similar method. Thank you for your great information a pleasure to watch your videos. Love from England 🤗
Love watching your videos. I live in Michigan in zone five and our winter is too cold to over winter cannas in the garage. What we have to do here is dig the rhizomes up in the fall and we place them in a open cardboard box and put them in the basement. By the time May comes the bulbs will be sprouting in the box and ready to plant. They'll break through the soil by Memorial Day, and that's the weekend it's safe to plant our annuals here in Michigan.
Ultimate info video for three of my top colorful plants. The wind was brutal during the recording but you pulled through beautifully. Thanks for helping the novice amongest us to be better gardeners.
O my goodness! Finally a great video on overwintering plants without any light and it makes sense totally! Can you please let me know how your plant finally did and which other plants can be overwinter like this?
Thank you so much for the wonderful information! I have retired and love to garden. The geraniums I have this year have been beautiful and I will try to winterize them following your directions!
Susan thank you for this great tip. I will be trying this for sure . I have this same one's as yours. So until next time God Bless you and your family and have a Blessed Week and Stay Safe my Friend.
Thanks you I grew some small cannas in a large pot this summer. I live in SW Indiana, and the winters are no longer super cold. I may simply bring the pot into my garage and try your tips for over wintering.
Great tips! Thank you so much. I’ve actually saved amaryllis and poinsettias for the following season and they did well for me. I’ll try these plants too.
I am subscribing today because this was so informative. I am in zone 5 but I never thought about bringing the cannas in the pot. I would dig them out and put them in peat.
Thank you for sharing . I learned a lot about my Canna's . I never knew you could plant them in a pot in the ground . So until next time God Bless you .
Such great advise! I've been wondering what to do with my canals and yes I overwintered my geraniums in the greenhouse and they did mold.. I will try this with them!
Thanks for all that great information about geraniums and begonias. This year I am going to overwinter both of them. I live in a tiny cottage but have access to a shed to let them sleep thru the winter...
I enjoy watching your videos. I have a question about the cannas. I have mind in the ground do I dig then up and put them in the basement. Also do I knock the dirt off the store them for the winter.
Depends on how cold it gets in your zone. If you dig them up then yes knock the dirt off and store in a cool dry place inside a box with sawdust or paper to wick excess moisture. :)
thank you so much for this video, i have been waiting for you to make this video, your cannas always look so nice and i love cannas, one of my favorites..thanks for sharing the knowledge, happy gardening!!
I have a lot of cuttings geraniums can I store them the same way as big ones or am I better taking them in side for winter thank you I watch your video from Ireland
Thank you for the video. What should I do when the roots gets too dry during the winter? our humidity levels around 30%. The zone is between 5 and 6. How do I know when and how much to mist?
Hello Casey! Love your videos they are awesome 👌 I have a mop head hydrangea which only gets a few blooms. Should I continue fertilizing for next year's blooms or stop? Thanks for your time
I live in zone 5. My Cannas are on the south side of our home. They are next to the foundation. In the fall cut them to the ground. pile grass clipping and leaves on top. Then I place a bag of mulch on top. In the spring take the mulch and grass and leaves off. I have been doing this now for 12 years. I tried in pots in the garage didn't work. Maybe because did not check to see about how dry they were.
Hi Debbie, just watched this video which is very timely as I have cannas and pelargoniums to overwinter, but I couldn’t hear everything you said about the pelargoniums because of the wind. Do you put the flower end in a paper bag, leaving roots outside, and hang it upside down in the garage? I think that’s what you said. Thank you!
I think hardy cannas you can yea. I’ve kept cannas outside in Pennsylvania next to my previous home similar to how I do with my banana trees with a mulch method. It’s all about experimenting.
I started canas from seed (now about 10") and they are in individual pots inside. Should I set them outside and let them get zapped by the cold weather and then cut them back and put them in the garage until Spring? Or, should I keep them alive inside and then transplant outside in the Spring?
Hi Debbie! You are a goldmine of information! I also live in zone 8 in Vancouver, BC so your info is so helpful! Quick question? What variety is the red banana tree? And where could I get one? I haven't seen any in my area so far. Thank you!
With cannas, I've always left the foliage on to die back. Doesn't it help feed the bulb for the following year? I take the pots and put them in the basement and let them dry out and die back until the following spring.
Brilliant advice. I have a cold greenhouse here in the UK and it's very hot and miss whether my pelargoniums survive or not. I will definitely try your paper bag method. Just wondering what the temperature in your garage is?
Debbie, have you ever stored dormant fuchsias? I’ve only come across videos of gardeners in the UK doing it. I’m giving it a shot this year. Certainly can’t hurt!
I am still so very impressed. Le Terrain is definitely a beautiful spot, looking forward to the next video. And what a beautiful dog you have, Steven. What breed is it?
Since I live in the South of NYC, the coldest that we get here is 10 degrees, for only one or twice per year. The rest of the winter is twenties to thirties until end of March. Then the forties come in......
Excellent advice: video didn't always show what you were doing while you spoke (out of range), and times around 7:00 min mark when wind unfortunately made it impossible to hear your words. Will def tune in again though!
I'm on the edge of zone 6, but sometimes we get a zone 5 freeze. Would leaving the canna's in the pot work for my zone. My attached garage is around 40-50 In winter. My detached garage mirrors the temp outside but without the frost. I've always heard I should remove the bulbs, but that's a lot of trouble.
Very informative, well put video and a pleasure to watch. Awesomely lovely lady.
Loved watching your video. I’m across the pond on Vancouver Island very informative and you’ve given me the courage to start growing cannas!

Great ideas I’ll try it with my geraniums for sure. I think I’ll dust the box and plants lightly with diametreous earth to prevent any creep crawly
Thank you I enjoy very much all your gardening lessons

Great info!! Thank you!

What about the crispy leaves indoors. That’s my biggest challenge.
Can you keep cannas in the ground over winter in zone 6b
No you would need to dig them up and store them. :)
@@GardenStylenw thank you for getting back to me
Can you over winter them in the pots as you described in zone 6, in a greenhouse that gets below freezing in January and February?
I think hardy cannas you can yea. I’ve kept cannas outside in Pennsylvania next to my previous home similar to how I do with my banana trees with a mulch method. It’s all about experimenting.

Do you have any winterizing tips for Boston ferms
A very informative video. Thanks for sharing.
How would you over winter them in Ohio? I normally dig them up and dry out and store in dry box in my basement.
Please any advise for purple fountain grass, mine died on my flower bed , I mulched but didn't work
Thank you!
Do you spray for bugs on anything you bring in the house?
Im in NC zone 8a, I really want to winter my gerains over, mine just have solid green leaves, is it possible to just bring them in the house?
With cannas, I've always left the foliage on to die back. Doesn't it help feed the bulb for the following year? I take the pots and put them in the basement and let them dry out and die back until the following spring.

I can’t get rid of them, I dug all mine up and then in the spring their popping up in different places.
Do you know the variety of the cannas in this video? The red leaves are so pretty!
Lori Cheatham Yes! Black knight, Tropicana and gold zebra.
Thank you so much. 👏🙏🥰😍😘❤️🌹💕👏🥰😍🙏😘❤️💕🌹👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
The whole plant per bag or can a couple plants go in each bag?
You can put more than one.
Can coleus be wintered in garden shed?
Debbie, have you ever stored dormant fuchsias? I’ve only come across videos of gardeners in the UK doing it. I’m giving it a shot this year. Certainly can’t hurt!
Is your garage heated? Won't they freeze in the garage?
Hi can you overwinter non stop begonias ??

My canna flowers flop over when they bloom. What is my problem?
What do you do about bugs on your plants you bring inside?

Cathy Carlson They should be fine as long as they stay on the dry side. It's excess moisture that hurts them. Good luck! :)
Debbie Cassidy thank you!
Do you know what zone is in Texas .? I’m sorry i just start planting; thank you
How do I care for canna Lillie’s in zone 9
