      Hi - I did this video on November 6th - a few years ago now - so there's still time for yours to die off. Just try and do it before the first frost. I wouldn't cut them off - I would definitely break them off, you want the break to be flush with the corm itself. Wrap them up with fleece or paper and keep them dry.

Every year I always find vine weevils, after getting rid of them I sprinkle yellow sulphur on each one and wrap them individually in newspaper and then store in a cardboard box in the garage. If they are very big I wait until I’m replanting again and slice them in two, dust with sulphur and leave them for a good few hours to dry the cut parts, then plant again in the Spring. Hi Nikola, you should be ok if you have brought them inside your house, keep them in the coolest part of your house though, don't let them get too warm and dry out. When you take them outside next spring, remember to change the soil as this will give them a new feed and put them in a bigger pot as the corms will grow bigger.

Fleece is a versatile material as it can protect plants from frost, wind, hail and pests. - I hope this helps.

    Hello, I have my begonias in 2 pots. I didn't dig them out last year so maybe I should this year. How often do you have to take them out of the pot and store them for winter?

    • @AllotmentGrowHow
      @AllotmentGrowHow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Betty, Begonias are usually dug out of pots and stored every winter, if you leave them in the pots every year there's a chance that we could have a bad winter with really cold conditions that could kill the corms - although if you live in the UK we haven't had a bad winter for a few years now. Also there might be a chance of them rotting in a pot if we have a overly wet winter. Finally if they stay in the same pot with the same soil, after a couple of years they'll have used up all the nutrients in that pot and so the soil will be nutrient deficient. It's good practice to take them out every year. store them and then plant them out again in the spring using fresh soil and nutrient rich compost so they can have a good feed. I hope this helps. :-)

    • @AllotmentGrowHow
      @AllotmentGrowHow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, I've never had corms that suffered from mould or rot, also when you remove them from the soil they shouldn't be wet - the soil might be slightly damp, but just brush that off. They dry pretty quick and just need a bit of protection from the frost over the winter period which is why fleece is such a great product to wrap them in. You can also use newspaper if you like

      @@onlyhuman1954 You'll always get a few that don't come back the following year, that's normal, they were either too small or just not strong enough to make it through the winter. The medium/larger ones tend to survive better... but just overwinter as many as you can and you'll have some survivors for next year. If you just leave them in the ground or pots, you can guarantee that all of them will rot away and die or be killed by the frost. Good luck

    • @AllotmentGrowHow
      @AllotmentGrowHow  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ann, they should overwinter fine. Whenever the corms get bigger with each passing they tend to produce more plant than flower. I've never split them myself but research suggests to make sure the two halves have a shoot on them, split them and dust the wound with sulphur and let them dry out. As for which season, I'm pretty sure you do it in the spring, allow the wound to dry out and keep it warm. Then start them off in a pot on the windowsill. Sometimes the corms do die from the split. I guess it's all about the prep and a bit of luck... Cheers Adam

      @MargaretUK ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need to start them off in spring first, in a shallow tray of damp sand, wait until they have sprouted then cut with a sharp knife making sure that there is a sprout on each half. Leave to heal for a few days, no need for powder, then pot on!

    this was so easy to follow thankyou, other sites have suggested leaving the corms outside for a week but rain is forecast so is that step not necessary? Also my begonias still look full of life so I am loath to do them just yet but also worried about frost?!!!

    • @AllotmentGrowHow

      Glad you found it helpful, I don't personally dry them out but if you have a greenhouse or shed then leave them in there for a week if you like. If your begonias are still looking good then leave them a while longer. This video was filmed in November so the plants were dying back which is why I dug them up then. Check your area for the first frost dates, where I live we don't have any forecast for a while.

    • @AllotmentGrowHow
      @AllotmentGrowHow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Marina, if it's in a pot and you are keeping that pot indoors over winter then you may not have to dig it out as the frost and cold won't get to it. You need to try and protect them from the frost... Digging them out and replanting them next year is a good idea as you will be feeding them with new, fresh compost, basically replenishing the nutrients so they can have a good feed. If you keep plants in pots, year in year out and don't add new compost the soil will become nutrient deficient over time as the plant will have run out of food. I hope this helps 😀👍

      Hi Kathee, you could store them in a shed, garage, a dark, cool cupboard in your kitchen or house. They should do ok in an average winter ... but if temps drop to -10, it will kill them... but we rarely get temps like that in mainland England anymore.

      I seen a comment here. I consider it like light quilt batting that can be bought at a fabric store. He also said pillowcase, old t-shirt or newspaper. Anything that will protect from frost. It’s different weather in UK then for CN or US. I’m going to try to store in new experimental above ground root cellar made from refrigerated building panels and mounded with bark. I think as long as they are above freezing and kept cool and not dried to a frazzle they should be fine.
