      I feel like Kaisa is attempting to recreate the magic of Zero Suit Samus but fails in the backstory execution. Instead of her being stuck in the void for 10 years, have her get out significantly sooner but have her be infected with some void disease. It explains her solitude while not being hideous. Make her Suit a venom thing where it is slowly killing her but she uses its powers for good.

    The juxtaposition between Kai'sa's lore and her current visuals is truly HILARIOUS:
    "I grew up in an otherworldly hellscape and in order to survive I had to give up a part of my humanity. Now the people I try to protect can only recognize me as a monster!"
    She turns around, and it is a gorgeous lady in a bodysuit with a phat azz and deep cleavage. Oh, and immaculate hair and makeup of course.

    Kaisa definitely feels like an attempt to create their version of Zero Suit Samus but the backstory makes it incongruous. If you want to keep her current design make her escape the void roughly a year after, but make her infected with some void disease. That explains why she lives in solitude and uses void powers.

      The other thing that i like they said about telling the viewer throigh scars et is because samus is free for the most part. She takes breaks etc and while traumaed its been awhileee since then (plus the girl loves cute stuff and probably does keep herself) compared to Kaisa who doesnt have the luxory yet to be free, being locked in the void for 10 years? In my opinion, "gap moe" is a criminally under appreciated piece of popular design. Y'all are nerds so you probably already know what that is, but for those who don't it's (in part) the idea that your character's appearance and personality are opposites in such a way that it makes the character more appealing. Think a sweet bulldog or an aggressive little girl with an otherwise cherubic appearance.
    I think having Kai'sa have this strict, creepy, alien appearance, but a compassionate nature would make her more popular than sex appeal ever could

  • @Shaiyo5
    @Shaiyo5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +124

    The scarred, glowing eye is a very nice change. One of the issues with Kaisa's design is that they took the "second skin" idea a little too far. As stated, she looks like she's just wearing a catsuit over her slim thicc body (which makes NO sense). I find it hard to believe that someone who has been living in deeply Void infested territory alone for 10 years would only have some pale skin to show for it. Having the Void carapace infiltrating her body, replacing her skin rather than just tightly adhering to it, changing how her scars heal, etc, is a much better choice.

    • @MohamedRamadan-qi4hl
      @MohamedRamadan-qi4hl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Technically it's the void. Like there is no sun there so the pale skin would. make sense

    I fucking love Claire’s first and third design and her second design’s head. I wish they could’ve just fused those, they really nailed the themes for me. Jack’s felt too mechanical in some areas. The infection, the fungus, the insectoid nature really shone through in Claire’s iterations. I did like the halfhazard bob and insane eyes that Jack portrayed in his first head, the corrupted eye in the final design could had a close general shape to those insane eyes. The blade designs in Jack’s third design are also very nice.

  • @ashb712
    @ashb712 2 ปีที่แล้ว +333

    Kerrigan is everything kai'sa's design should have been. Incredibly monstrous and grotesque looking, but also still manages to incorporate sexiness in a way that's not disruptive of Kerrigan's design. Funnily enough your guys' redesign ended up looking a lot more like kerrigan at several stages, esp with the wings. Personally I think her asymmetrical eye is fucking awesome, but I feel like the helmet with the one eye in the middle looks better than the sort of "mummy wrapping" look you gave to the final design's helmet.

    • @RamonSpirits
      @RamonSpirits 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Being a fan from Starcraft since i was a kid,Kerrigan and the zerg are living proof that looking overly human is not required to identify or to find a character interesting.The whole "beast within" concept is great during puberty and when you´re in a bad part of your life and due to the zerg´s animal nature and Kerrigan controlling them while still trying to be human,though looking super alien is just amazing.

    19:40 the thing that's often missed when people talk about Kai'Sa is that she went missing when she was 10, and she spent half her life with 0 social interaction. She's a hunter and a survivor, but when faced with people she hangs in this balance of Void Hunter and that 10 year old girl. She knows how she's supposed to act around people, was raised to be kind and grew to be violent.
    It's nice to see you talking about that aspect of her instead of fully focusing on the Daughter of the Void aspect.

  • @dragonicdoom3772
    @dragonicdoom3772 2 ปีที่แล้ว +70

    Such an improvement, I love that you kept the spiral design from Cho'Gath's redesign. Giving her the scarred void eye also helps to show how she literally sees the world in a different light than before she fell into the Void and now is dealing with 2 different outlooks on life: one human and one void. The core over her heart is also a nice touch and could lend itself to a slight rework of the story, where both Kai'sa and the void creature landed fatal blows on each other, with Kai'sa being stabbed through the heart. In that brief moment before death, they both focussed on the purest instinct of the Void: Consume. They consume each other and become one being, sharing memories and instincts.

    im gonna paraphrase something i said on twitter, i think a quick hot fix to kai sas design would just be to make her makeup/face markings be the same openings as the gill looking things on the chest and rib cage area, it has her being corrupted in the body parts she has exposed and then she is actually kinda monstrous

    The new splash art is sick, I love how it gets across the idea of Kai'sa keeping the void at bay and acting as a protector. The framing of the shot, with the warm glow highlighting the city in the background, really does wonders to communicate that.

  • @RaguPastaSauce
    @RaguPastaSauce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    33:33 I really like the idea of a one eye mask
    In nature, prey tend to have eyes on the sides of their heads. This is so they have a better field of view and can be better alerted to any potential danger in the area (Think pigeons)
    However, predators have eyes on the front of their face so they can better focus in on their target (Think birds of prey)
    Humans obviously have eyes on the front of the face, but the one singular eye on the mask to me is like a next level to this (thematically) and implies her human face is the prey. But when the suit covers her face, she is in her "predator" mode as the Big singular eye moves her FOV even more to the front of the face
    If they add in some sort of indication that she can use Rek'sai's tremor sense to a certain degree (in the lore, doesn't necessarily need to be reflected in the gameplay) to make up for her lack of depth perception, she'd made a perfect predator.

    • @DaShikuXI
      @DaShikuXI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A single eye is not the next level. Predators have two eyes so they can see depth. It is absolutely integral to hunting. Especially for someone like Kai'Sa, who basically uses guns, her depth perception is integral. If anything a third eye would make a whole lot more sense than her just having a single one. Having one eye would just end up hurting her hunting capabilities.

    • @Stolanis
      @Stolanis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DaShikuXI Yeah, I was thinking exactly the same thing. In fact, in terms of depth perception it would make a lot more sense (and look a lot more creepy) if she also had eyes on those big shoulder-pods of hers and the suit was somehow feeding that visual data directly to her, possibly through the ocular nerve of her lost eye (yay body horror!). Depth perception works via triangulation, so the farther away the target is the harder it becomes to accurately tell the distance because the relative angles become too narrow; the farther apart the eyes are the wider the angle becomes and the more accurate triangulation becomes over long distances, so the pods would work perfectly for that.

    I do enjoy how you broke up the more purposeless points of symmetry, however the chevron approach the designers mentioned seems to have gotten lost in the chest and in some of the plate shapes at the knee and elbow. I think some of the tapered shapes could have remained. All things considered, this is much further in the right direction than her release design

    The only thing i didnt liked was she having only one eye on the last form. i think she having 3 eyes instead would look more monstrous and would look more like a "upgrade" than losing a eye.

  • @BuoyB
    @BuoyB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    I honestly thought the markings on her face meant to imitate the eyes of void creatures. I always thought they were either lights actually set into her skin or naturally forming markings from her mask trying to consume her or something. Didn’t know she was drawing them on with a fine tipped sharpie and a mirror.
    While I do think Kai’sa should’ve been more corrupted like her father or Malzahar, they do a really good job at making excuses for her. She’s fit because she’s always running. She’s meaty because she’s so good at hunting. She’s not corrupted because she’s wearing a void creature. Etc etc. but there’s still things that aren’t accounted for. There’s no reason for cleavage, there’s no reason for so much butt crack. Her suits exoskeleton doesn’t cover her vital organs. Her hair should not look that silky. There’s no way she’s perfectly sane after 10-ish years of little to no sleep and constant killing and consuming. She barely evolves even after hunting so much. She still remembers how to speak perfectly. Her skin and eyes haven’t seen the sun in a decade. Can’t even tell where her crystal guns come from or how her jet packs float with her. Is it the same creature as her suit?
    The design just screams “play it safe and keep it broad so she can wear anything” like most female champ designs

    I'm sure someone already pedantically commented this, but just in case: In Frankenstein, the monster is not at all described as being sewn up patches with the two bolts lol, he's actually described as being quite beautiful but with "unnerving eyes". I really like the final design, and it's absolutely a marked improvement over what we have in-game. I especially love the void distorted eye. My only wish is that some of that distortion went even further. Like in your madness of the void designs, Kai'sa face was even more alien, and I think that would have gone a long way in selling the idea that she's holding on to the last gasps of her humanity, and would really push the narrative that the humans she protects see her as a monster. Still, great job.

    The comparison of Kai’Sa to “if Warwick had the same body, but then he just had a normal dog’s head on top” was actually a really good analogy for the kind of visual disparity that is going on with her. The disconnect between what the story makes you think of, and then what she actually looks like. Good comparison there, I think it illustrated the point very well.

  • @Spooky_Magooky
    @Spooky_Magooky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Interestingly I think that because Kai'sa needed more subtle changes compared to a full overhaul like some of the other earlier champions that it seems like it may have been a more challenging process. Always a joy to see what you come up with in the end and I agree with all your points on how her current design just doesn't fully make the cut.
    I find the fact that she after having to survive the void that she is still a hopeful and compassionate person is quite inspiring and I liker her personality and character, but her design is just too clean. Living in the void for such a long time and having to fight for survival and she just looks like a model about to put on a photo shoot? Quite incongruous.

The short haircut fit even more with her speed-based thematic and gameplay than does the current Scarlett Johansson we have.

    I like Jack's character designs more but Claire's Splash art is always phenomenal, her technique and attention to every minut aspect of her work is always a joy to watch as well as how she interprets Jack's work when they collaborate. Another thing I would like to state is that I think that this redesign exudes so much personality and character depth, which, among other things makes me honestly find this design a lot more attractive than her conventionally attractive portrayal in game which as you said before trades the aforementioned traits for sex appeal.

  • @xSkyWeix
    @xSkyWeix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wasn't sold on your final design, but holy crap. The splash art approached perfection! She doesn't look sexy per se but still is fuckable. It isn't the first thing that comes to mind rather that she's dangerous. Predatory. This corruption of the left side of her head gives the vibe that she is struggling against monsterization. But more importantly that the void influences her emotions, but the right side. The decision-making side is still human. She's still human. The only thing that doesn't get through is her kindness but that seems appropriate considering that others think of her as a monster. But I would like her to be more in line with the new Void style. More mono-color dark gray and spiral. Especially I miss these swirling scars of a thumbnail sketch.
    Also, I very much liked Claire's rundown of the project at the beginning. The best intro so far. More needed structure instead of a disorganized mass of ideas.

    Kai'sa is so much wasted potential when it comes to her design in League!
    I feel like even in her base design, if the make up lines in her face were actual scars that, the more she evolves, overtake more of her face to the point of looking like her actual toggle, it'd make her design 100 times better and it'd justify the evolve mecanic more aesthetically.

      That wouldn't work. You have to keep in mind that these designs have to be visualized in game. When you're zoomed out in league and constantly moving and fighting, the lines on her face are way too small of a detail to give any form of clarity about anything. You need to work with bigger assets and shapes to clarify that.

    My only critique would be the side of the hair you have represented as shaven off to create more of that rugged grungy warrior effect. If someone is in the void, it would be realistic for her to have more of this untamed and jagged hair over the course of her time fighting beasts and spawn. Having a side of her head grazed off to me deters from the realism of this void-raised champion that’s nothing but wild and untamed.

      36:47 they mentioned that part of the head isn't "shaven" off, her hair stopped growing on that side because of the void corruption and void skin that extended on that side of her head (LE: I see now that in the splash art it does look a lot like it's shaved hair)

It just makes me believe riot designs something and then puts thought into lore and gameplay afterwards.

    • @Stolanis
      @Stolanis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kai'sa (at least before she meets Taliyah in the lore story Hollowspun) isn't so much there to help humans as she is to hunt Void monsters. That's what she's been doing her whole life thus far, after all. Saving humans is a nice bonus, but she's been surviving on her own for so long that she views attachments as a liability; not to mention she's so used to people being scared of her that she thinks it's best they don't get too close in case they attack and she's forced to retaliate. While reading Hollowspun gives one the sense that Kai'sa definitely *wants* to help, she's still a long way from being friendly, approachable or in any way charismatic; that's much more Taliyah's thing, which is why they work so well as foils for each other: one bright and optimistic, the other cold and pragmatic.

    really love how this came out, although i gotta admit i kinda preferred your previous designs where the suit looked a lot more organic, and her ''wing-jetpack-thingy's'' felt more like actual muscle. Like, the limb connecting it to her body almost looked like a bicep, while the final one looks more like armor platings. The previous concept also really made it feel like she can't take it off, like she and the suit are one, while the one in-game feels like she can un-zip the suit at any time, and that feeling of almost biosynthesis(?) is somewhat lost as well in the latest one. Another thing i really found interesting about the first one is how her corrupted eye gave an almost spiral/uzumaki-inspired design, which is a great way of depicting the impact her experience on the void had on her psychosis

    i love EVERY single part of the redesign, your early concepts, i love how you went over through all of the things i got in my head when it comes to redesigning her, like when i thought about "just make her figure more skinny so she looks malnourished" you said that in the video a few minutes later, and how i kept thinking "and also make one corrupted eye so when she comes to the surface, people think she is monstrous. She needs to retain her humanity but show at least one thing that makes other people struggle to read her as a human" and YOU JUST DID THAT in your concepts which came through the final design. The only thing i would change, but that's a real nitpick from me, i would manipulate the light source to make Kai'sa's face more visible in the splash art. The fact it's really dark is okay, since the main light source comes from the back, but i feel like in League, faces are important in splash arts since you need to recognize the champion from the icons in game. Maybe using the pink bouncing light that comes from her weapon to lighlight facial features a little bit more would help. Other than that, i love the video, i went through entirety of this, i love long commentaries, especially about league of legends, and about art and character design. I love the technique you use to create character concepts, i love the attention to details you put in the splash art, the tiniest little elements of "void armor" added to make it crisp and shiny and give it the texture it needs.

    The only real thing that has bothered me about Kai'sa's design is simply the fact that her helmet comes off. If she was covered head to toe in void monster suit it makes much more sense and we wouldn't know what she looks like underneath anyway. It seems like her perfect gorgeous face is the root of most people's criticisms. Plus having your face exposed in the void seems kinda dangerous anyway. There's nothing wrong with having a sexy female character design and have them be a badass. Absolutely nothing. I fucking love Evelynn and Ahri. But it really, really frustrates me when the game is already full, and I mean almost every humanoid female champion is a sexy model. And then they have this cool concept for a female-becoming-monster character and they make her one of the sexiest designs. WHY?! They didn't even bother giving Samira some battle scars from all the battling she has done in her backstory. Scars are fucking hot. God damnit. RekSai is female, but with her design they might as well not given her a gender because it's the most "monster" looking monster in League to the point where her gender is irrelevant. ChoGath at least has an emoting face and VelKoz is a super intelligent being and they both talk making them a bit more relatable. Kaisa being like "oh no I'm a monster, nobody likes me" is like Kim Kardashian complaining if she got a bad haircut. Sooo relatable.
    It's come to the point where I have given up and accepted that League is really favouring good looking humanoid characters which isn't a bad thing... But could we really not have gotten a cool monster in these FOUR years? Not a single one???
    At least Renata Glasc is a great new character design. An older, handsome woman who isn't completely defeminised. Again, still kind of a model, and the splash artist did a really effective job of highlighting her huge chest... but it's a step forward.
    Edit: WAIT KAISA'S MODEL CHANGES WITH ABLITIES????????? I literally cannot see a change on her prestige and I swear I'm fucking trying.

    Her suit and the jet pack thing started taking on a more technological feel to me as well.
    I'm no expert here, but maybe you can look up eyes from crustaceans, prawns etc, as an inspiration for a weird void eye.
    As for the suit, I think removing some of the gold would be good.
    A small gripe I have with the hair is that it can look like a normal buzzcut to me, so perhaps if she had some hair sticking out the scarred area, it could bring out more of that damaged feeling, rather than just a haircut.

That might just be the void connection but it makes sense for her to be visually marked by her experiences, rather than, say being a supermodel with a few stripes painted on her face.

      @@nrnrn999 and I think that could be conveyed through a more organic looking armor, no sane person would care about your face when the rest of your body looks like it came from the void. It also comes down to a tendency they have to make female faces less conventionally attractive when trying to undo over sexualization, pretty doesn't mean over sexualized. Not to mention that the contrast between the monster and the 20 years old woman that happened to be an innocent child when she got in contact with the void (canon age) gets a bit lost in this design.

    I get so mad whenever I’m reminded that riot literally said “well we’re designing more human champs because don’t seem to like playing monster champs. It must be because they don’t relate to them.” When they give monster champs all the weird abilities and the human champs the simple abilities. They ignore the outliers, like Rell who has a weird kit that no one plays, or Volibear who LOTS of people enjoy playing now because his kit is pretty simple. You can’t say you’re not designing monster champs because people don’t like playing them while turning a blind eye to the fact that you have a ghost who’s whole thing is she jumps when she autos and you’ve needed her into the ground, a Star Dragon who manages his stars who you nerf the second he goes above his .0005% play rate, and a Giant freaking cat fish you INSIST on having be a support when people clearly like playing him top. It’s not about how much people enjoy playing monster champs, it’s about how you design them. They’re making stupid excuses.
    Also I just have to include it here because a separate comment is gonna be about how much I’m gonna end up enjoying this. Diversity is not the reason why League is popular. It’s not the reason why people flock to the game and it’s not the reason why people play it either. People because while the player base is toxic and the balance is questionable, the game is fundamentally fun to play. It’s exciting, with highs and lows. The skin color or sexuality of a champ doesn’t matter on the battlefield. Do I think it’s important? Duh, of course. You gotta design people with more than just one skin color, and Runeterra is a big enough place for such peoples to develop. But do not attribute the popularity of the game to something that fundamentally is surface level. It’s also NOT a good reason for there not to be more monster champs. Black people like playing as unspeakable horrors from beneath the world as much as a white dude does. It’s not about relatability. It’s about fantasy.

      Ok, let me ask you this then. Why would you make a unique monster and then give it a very simple kit that wastes the unique appearance, when you could instead give that simple kit to a simple human and have more thematic coherence and a more relatable character? Sure, Aurelion Sol could just have Lux's abilities with a star skin, but that wastes the idea of a big space dragon bending stars to his will.

      @@leetri oh believe me I get it. I’m not saying not to give the monsters unique gameplay. What I’m getting upset about is the fact that Riot sites people relating to the monster champs as the reason, and not their gameplay. Like I said, look at Rell. She’s not popular because her gameplay is weird and hard for people to parse. She has literally been ignored as a champion. But according to riots logic, it’s just because people don’t relate to her.
      I’m not saying take away A Sol’s stars or Ornn’s fire breath. Just don’t try and gaslight me into why you’re making pretty champions. Its not even because of their American or European players either. It’s because China doesn’t like monsters.
      Oh, and one last thing. I get it, they need to make money. But come on, at least one monster per year please? I just hope that the void empress isn’t a human.

      @@thedragonknight3600 It's not because of China, monster champions are unpopular everywhere. I wish League players would stop blaming China for every single thing and pretend that they're worth more than the Chinese players. NA is one of the smallest "big" servers, why should Riot prioritize them over the vast majority of players?
      China is awful in a lot of other real-life ways, but can we stop blaming literally everything in League on them?

    I think it would be neat if her hair was kept long, I like the idea of a part of her hair basically being destroyed by the void. But if she’s someone who makes an active choice to hold on to her humanity it would make sense that she refuses to cut her hair. Making a large contrast between the Hunter and the human Girl as long hair wouldn’t really be something a quick moving constantly battling assassin should have, the all-consuming, hunting void doesn’t care for the hair but Kai’sa refuses to part with it

    Hey I'm not sure if I'm alone with this but I think there's an audio issue with Jack. His audio is coming mostly from the right and it is very distracting and far louder than the rest of the audio

    that's crazy, I love this new design, with some sort of Warframe's operators quality to it, strange body alteration, and piece of armor looking more like dwelling and lurking curves than plain geometric shapes, don't get me wrong, I love Noxus' new champions' identity, but it doesn't suit for a 10 yo girl abandonned to a certain death in this alien pit of despair.
    Great job as always you two, can't wait to see the following projects

    That video is so amazing, the only problem come from the unbalanced audio level between the two voices, and the panning at right is pretty odd too, i was constantly changing the volume here.
    Other than that, i just want you to redesign every champion! This is GREAT!

    We could justify Kai'Sa the way she is because perhaps the "fear" her appearance ellicits is not based on aesthetic but rather the association with the void. Because Void creatures come in all forms who is to say that a more humanoid thing that is reather appealing couldn't have evolved to better infiltrate and destroy Runaterra? That would make it understandable for people to distrust her even if she is sexy af... however Riot obviously didn't treat her lore that way so either a story rework or a design rework are really needed x.x

      The problem is, she doesn't even look very "void". She could be Eve sexier but have more monsterous/void design elements and then it would make sense

    This was an awesome video! I loved the redesign. I like how little was changed because y'all weren't forcing change for the sake of change, rather making modifications to the parts that desperately needed it. Great turnout, as always!
    PS: I really enjoyed this video format, it works great for these kind of videos!

    I'm one of the small percentage that would MUCH rather see more monster champions. No more anime tiddies, PLEASE RITO. I agree that the relatable, human champions do fuel the game, but... I would love to see more of a commitment to the badass, darker champions and skins. I think I may feel absolutely betrayed if the Skarner update doesn't bring him closer to the monster he was supposed to be; I remember being a teen and waiting all night for his release. I was so disappointed when I finally played him, and he was... what he is.
