I almost choked when i realized that Thresh wasn't even actually half-naked but that they *outlined his abs over his clothes* that's so ridiculous I can't believe they did it.
I was actually drawn him thinking "man hes so sexy and cool, why is he a support?" And after playing him enough, i realized how support oddly fits his character.
And for the few who do wish he were just sexy instead, they already have Spirit Blossom, aka Dream Daddy Thresh, which works for that version of the character.

The event really did feel badly written. most characters just were done wrong, like Regar was basically a cat that can talk, Pyke was a kid with ADHD and a knife, Graves jsut felt out of place, too much focus on comic releif and no mention of twisted fate atall, or any explination why TF wasn't with him? It was jsut bad.. a cool concept but bad writing ruined it all.
Not only that, that thresh isn't evil or want to inflict pain. He is monstrous but actually a protective and fearsome of his spirits. The ones he hold to him. He wants them safe, they're his children. So having a thresh that's not evil and is sexy is actually good... A new light on a character
True that. I always imagined thresh as like a 40+ year old guy. He can be clean shaven but Riot seems to have a tendency nowadays to avoid making characters with normal aging, it always has to be silky smooth and appealing
I actually really love the “human” unbound Thresh you guys made. That is not a being who cares about how he looks, that is a being who just stole someone’s throne and decided to do a royal makeover to fit the new job.

Congrats, that description of how Thresh wasn’t changed at all by the effect of the Ruination actually made me think of him as an intimidating force, as opposed to how I sometimes see him… as the Spirit Halloween version of Skeletor. Don’t get me wrong, I like Thresh a lot, but I never really considered how unfeeling and monstrous he’d be were he a real force in the world.
The artist is amazing the designs are perfect, they could replace the base thresh with the first one and it wouldn't mess up anything, or use that for unbound and the scepter one for like "ruined king thresh"

The second design is so perfectly aligned to my aesthetic sensibilities it'd actually make me play thresh. I'm a sucker for the paladiny, holy order, gold trim order-aligned look, and managing to fit that very specific vibe into the spooky shadow isles theme truly feels like the culmination of Thresh's Lawful Evil BastardTM potential. hats off to you and the artist.
Ngl the second design you propose still made me feel like "oh ho tehee~ daddy dont hurt me" HAHAHHAHAHHA but for reals tho, when you mentioned the smile was similar to Hannibal Lector, that second design gave off a feeling that his looking at you as its prey, analyzing the ways he would make you despair, the stare and smile was so creepy and perfect to its character, it reminds me of meeting the 1991 Hannibal from silence of the lamb! And i love how ya keep the same face and clothes design from the human thresh and just ruin-fied it, it may seem lazy to others, but to me it just makes the more sense in terms of showing a story with the characters design. The character designs should shows its story and personality and it perfectly did that! (Sorry for long rant, I was just so happy with the design)

I do love both skins, particularly skin 2, simply because it shows a way to make a human character without making them look like a fucking anime fashion model.

Even if they did hire Skyen to critique their designs they'd just end up ignoring everything he has to say because, as they have shown time and time again, good design is not something they are interested in when there's MONEY to be made. All hail our corporate overlords Riot, Tencent and the massively influential Chinese demographic (which has shown overwhelmingly in market research to prefer the design trends that Riot are currently gunning for: sexy, bland and 'appealing'). The far more tragic reality is that Riot *already* has tonnes of artists a lot like Skyen already working for them, doing their best to rail against the creatively bankrupt waifu/husbando generating machine that Riot has become without losing their jobs.
I am sure that artists and designers at riot are perfectly capable at their jobs. Remember that characters like jhin and kindred exist. If only they could work without restraints...
Im actually digging the second design because it feels so much more uncomfortable, it plays into the idea that he's your boss and loves to make you suffer. Also when I look at that face I actually get shivers down my spine. Not to say I don't like the first one because it's undoubtedly a good design it just doesn't make me want to hide in my house dreading the days where I will have to see him

There's so much wrong with Kai'Sa, especially from a canon point, that hid video is either gonna be SUPER long because he's going in depth with issues of female represantation in video games and their "need" to be hot at all times or SUPER short because he's just gonna say "Kai'sa sucks, here's why. I actually kinda like the second "more appealing" redesign of Unbound Thresh. If it is the official unbound skin, I'd totally admit that Riot has won my heart by this human form and throw my money for it.

wow I really love these redesigns, they convey his character in a great way, at the same time enhancing the experience and actually putting his story forward I'm still sad that Riot decised to throw out Thresh's lore to make him a hot eboy just like that
The 1st version you showed sell the unhinged monstrous side that he was trying to conceal as warden during the days in the Blessed Isles and i really like it that claiming his humanity made him more of a monster than a human. 10/10 would definitely be a banger of a skin if was released and ties up well too for the lore.

If unbound thresh was a handsome mature man I would have been on board, at least it is a clear contrast with Viego's young sexiness. Like the evil uncle that lost the throne to his brother's son. Riot's design team need to study the otome isekai genre and its archetypes.

I'm really interested how this'll turn out, since I cannot imagine a palatable unbound Thresh design... at least one that would be canon I mean "Flesh is a prison" is one of his most iconic lines
@@skkadoot9533 I like them both especially the first choice - the part about souls practically bursting out of him, although I still prefer skeletor Thresh. Maybe cause I've played the game for so long... and if they wanted a "non-scary" child friendly version, that still gives off "psychopath" vibes the adults can pick up - then the second option is much better than what we have in the game now.
I wonder what's the next thing they'd do with the other characters? A canon rek'sai skin that look like kai'sa? A human-looking cho'gath rework, who has abs and pretty hair? An incredibly good-looking tahm kench with abs? Wukong skin that looks like rakan, which is also canon? Are they gonna rework all the yordles to look more like models? Add vastayans with more abs? More human-looking demons that aren't even considered as demons? Or maybe when the watchers break free, they'd look like Leonardo DiCaprio?
I'm two years late for this but oh god, this first redesign looks genuinely terrifying to a degree I don't think any champion really gets to. It's still not horror movie material, but his face really sells it to me, just the barely human face of a monster.
We should appreciate how skyen (and/or his editor) puts in the work to constantly pick the appropriate league emotes for every emotive word said…. my god.
Oh man... I cannot wait how they will mess up Moderkaiser when his turn to be "THE" villain arrives... (hopefully big metal armor should not be censored anywhere)
@@swan-cloud that’s an easy fix though, just make his armor cover his ribs like real armor typically does unlike fantasy boob plate. They might have the issue that he’s a ghost, but they could just make him flesh and maintain his character easily
I don't think he really needs to be censored tbh. Maybe they will have to erase the ghost body from his pc model and make a him just an empty suit of armor that glows from the inside.
I just really loved that bit about replacing "sex appeal" with "the appeal of power", you've UNDERSTOOD the underlying thing, and just... gah I can't words it, but I love it.
Maybe the skin is actually so incomprehensibly big brain by Riot because they knew people wouldn't like it. Just like Thresh loves the misery he gives to other people. Riot gives people misery for this skin.
We can hope that it's just 200iq PR play and after predictable hate they would be like "oh we noticed that you do not like this skin so here's a better one bcs we care about players so much
Personally I really like the 2nd design more. It keeps him... relatable for lack of a better word. It goes back to that idea you put forth, "You probably have met a person like Thresh in real life". It keeps in mind that above all of the monster that Thresh has become he started as a man. By seeing what he was and has become it kinda makes you want to strive to be a better person.
Guys big brain time: what if thresh looks like that because we would all be annoyed and suffering in agony yelling "oh god another hot skin this is not thresh" and thresh loves the agony of others 🤔🤔🤔
I personally really like the cool "skeletor look", as you call it, that the ruination gave him, so seeing the max power unbound Thresh while keeping his original design in mind and basically enhancing it, would have been pretty cool to see in my opinion. Other than that though, you make really good points in this, and the human Unbound Thresh that you made I think looks pretty good.
My opinion to unbound Thresh is that its mostly looks boring less interessting than the Base. Also it feels borderline scamy that they sell a Lore Book that they choose to ignore anyway. But your and Lauras designs look so much more interessting. The Mounstrous design looks like a Proper Update to Thresh an Monster in Humanoid Shape. The Human Side looks dark regal and menacing scary. It has a certain Vlad the Impaler Vibe to it and it looks like Human Thresh. I especialy like the Latern Staff and Crown Design. Atleast in my Headcanon one of those two will be the true Unbound Thresh depending on how the story continues. It was a great video. Thank you Skyen :)
How are you so incredibly descriptive? Just the way you speak, it just has such power and charisma to it, every word has emphasis, some more than others but with the images it just gets everything across from the info to the feelings, its amazing, im in awe. As a writer, I wish I could be this commanding and controlling with exactly what I want to get across. Do you maybe have any tips or anything?
Every time I watch ur "build a better ...." videos I get sad and mad at the same time because of how thoughtful and gorgeous these designs are! And how it should be already in the game! After Following Riot's Lore literally since the beginning and plunging into deep depression after all the shit we went through in "Ruination" event (the name now surely states its purpose) I can clearly say that all you've said in your video I truly respect/agree and in another universe really hope that THAT was cannon instead of all we've got in the past 2 months
Nope, every single Humanoid male champion from 2017 onwards have this same design Sylas, Kayn, Sett Akshan, Viego Yone, Aphelios and Pyke. All of them are "Sexy Boy with weapon, and Abs". This is a Chinese market standard, making male characters Manly and Sexy, while making Female Characters look like they came from Tanacon. It's lame, Character Design is dead in this game, saddly. Now we can just hope they won't start doing this crap with other monsters.
Your human version of this skin looks absolutely amazing and I would definetely pay for it. But I prefer it over your first redesign, which is good too btw, but it just looks too similar to basic Thresh for me. Nevertheless you did a fantastic job!
I think that's to recreate his stave from his life... but as a thresh main myself, I don't like what they did with it... and they even changed the filter on his voice, made it more high pitched ;-; And the design... why the gold accents? Isn't ruination about silver and black?
Something I wish they had done with the lore for thresh is imply that he’s bound to the shadow isles… like… the black mist/the first ruination bound him there and he’s using Viego to siphon enough power to “break his chains” and escape. This would also work into the animation where he’s found in Noxus. this is a glamour he wears in Noxus so he doesn’t get caught by the Noxian government or the Black Rose and he can feast as much as he wants. So he’s “unbound” in the sense that he’s no long held there and can harvest souls wherever he wants without being caught. Almost a “false hydra” from D&D but alluring and then hiding in plain sight rather than underground. It would work with his lore, and it would give him another layer of villainy in addition to wanting to become king of the shadow isles

I love your input. I think it’s valid and above and beyond. I think the fundamental issue that I’m becoming more aware of after watching your videos is that RIOT is operating two projects at the same time, one where they create champions with a deep lore and world building for players who care for that, and one where they appeal to players who just want cool looking, and easy to digest characters which not much depth, and they have no interest in bridging the two for financial reasons. The only way i see them making the effort two connect the dots is if players demanded that they do exactly that and keep vocalizing that they want rich world building and cohesive characters to boot, not just one with disregard for the other.
With the second redesign Thresh was made into Jafar in look and in lore hahaha Seriously though I do like both designs (prefer the first :) ) and agree across the board with why the original skin was poorly executed!! Great job to both you and Laura Galliano!!
The first, fully monstrous one is absolutely amazing and I'd love to see it as a real skin (Maybe the only thing I would change is that I would put his head a little lower because it looks more odd than scary ^^')
The human unbound version of Thresh reminds me a lot of the leader of the Drukhari (the Dark Elves) in Warhammer 40,000: Asdrubael Vect. They both start as nobodies, and both have risen to the point where they can employ the dark attraction of absolute power wielded by the absolutely corrupt. Vect and Thresh also share a common power source: human suffering. Definitely worth a look!
That Must-Be human Thresh has the Jafar vibes I wish the official one had. I love it. And I mean... Riot don't know some people find Jafar sexy, do they? Urf...
I really like your second design for him. Making him a creepily smiling human really sells that he is motivated by sadistic joy and hunger for power; very human emotions.
24:10 I would propose exactly that. Legendary skin of Thresh, throwing the staff like a spear or a javelin would be so epic. Then at the target location, it would be jabbed under a sharp angle in the ground and green ruination-like cracks would spread from the centre to the edges. A green mist would come out of those cracks as an indicator of its range.
But what would he throw it for? In his kit nothing would make sense with a staff. Maybe he can slam his staff into the ground to cast his ult but that's about all I could imagine the staff being useful for.
@@ziedyee The staff would be a carrier for his lantern. It would hover just above his staff and pulsing with power (the entire concept of "unbound" thresh is the fact that he has more power than what he knows to do with after all). To me, throwing the whole staff instead of just the lantern makes more sense anyway as the champion picking the lantern up has a way to actually hold on to it. The basic concept of his lantern transporting champions across small distances is questionable in the first place from the lore perspective as Thresh does not have the kind of personality to help out others. The lantern itself is pretty much an extremely simplified black hole for souls. The staff's effects would be amplifying the idea of Thresh putting his power level on display and could be an excuse for him helping his teammates out. The "look how much power I have" and "you need my assistance" kind of intimidating move.
I love the second design the most. Something about it was just so incredibly pleasing to me, and I think giving thresh a crown instead of floaty dreadlocks was a particularly big improvement. Thresh to me is someone who grabs at symbols of power and holds them just as close as he holds the tortured souls in his lantern. Would he paint himself in a mask of attractiveness with a shallow f**kboy face and silly abs that look like one of those 'manly chefs aprons' on him? Actually yes, I could picture him doing that. But if there was a crown up for grabs? You can be damn sure that crown would be the first thing he put his claws on.
My god this 2nd design kinda gives the vibes of a ghost king version of little finger to me, which honestly fits him perfectly. He really looks like someone who reached the top by backstabbing and betraying everyone who trusted him and who is overall a really petty monster.

What TB Skyen does a lot better than the average Internet user is that he arguments his opinions, he accepts different opinions and doesn't think he just knows better, and that he fosters constructive discussion. It's a great approach to any kind of discussion, especially art. But it's difficult, it requires effort, it's not as immediate and "fast food" consumable, and thus it's not as popular online

As a Thresh fan and main. I loved your Unbound Thresh turned up to an 11. Well done. The more human option is really really good with filling the "need" to be human for Wild Rift. Riot would do well to hire the artist of these and honestly minds like yours to their creative team.
So now my head canon is that thresh was Runeterra's prime Karen. So basically Unbound Thresh is like if Karen had the power they always wanted they would become just hot enough to get whatever they want.
As a freelance artist, I appreciate VERY much the fact that you took the time and money to commission an artist, it strengthens your vision and supports visual creators. People would just use shitty ass photoshop skills to bash together pre-existent work, while that's not necessarily good or bad per say... I don't like when people do that (unless it's for comedic reasons). My respect to you sir.
I can already imagine them re-making all his skins with this sexy boy look in the least inspired way possible. I really like Spirit Blossom Thresh because it felt like a one-time special thing where him being ridiculously handsome and sexy doesn't really matter within a different setting and the whole VN stuff going on.
As for lore reasons for why he's human I have an idea; thresh, after 1000 years of tormenting the same thousands of souls even their spirits unbound by the limits of flesh scream less and don't cry as hard as they used to due to so much time in anguish. So when demacians pure of heart and virtue invade his land he for the 1st time in so long gets a taste of untampered souls, relishing in this forgotten level of pleasure from his tortures. And with that he channels them to regenerate his bodily prison of flesh and now roams runeterra picking souls of the living like a farmer in a time if harvest Tell me whatcha think. I know it doesn't fit well with his king of the shadow isles direction but it's just my immediate idea

True that. I always imagined thresh as like a 40+ year old guy. He can be clean shaven but Riot seems to have a tendency nowadays to avoid making characters with normal aging, it always has to be silky smooth and appealing

Congrats, that description of how Thresh wasn’t changed at all by the effect of the Ruination actually made me think of him as an intimidating force, as opposed to how I sometimes see him… as the Spirit Halloween version of Skeletor. Don’t get me wrong, I like Thresh a lot, but I never really considered how unfeeling and monstrous he’d be were he a real force in the world.

Ngl the second design you propose still made me feel like "oh ho tehee~ daddy dont hurt me" HAHAHHAHAHHA but for reals tho, when you mentioned the smile was similar to Hannibal Lector, that second design gave off a feeling that his looking at you as its prey, analyzing the ways he would make you despair, the stare and smile was so creepy and perfect to its character, it reminds me of meeting the 1991 Hannibal from silence of the lamb! And i love how ya keep the same face and clothes design from the human thresh and just ruin-fied it, it may seem lazy to others, but to me it just makes the more sense in terms of showing a story with the characters design. The character designs should shows its story and personality and it perfectly did that! (Sorry for long rant, I was just so happy with the design)

Even if they did hire Skyen to critique their designs they'd just end up ignoring everything he has to say because, as they have shown time and time again, good design is not something they are interested in when there's MONEY to be made. All hail our corporate overlords Riot, Tencent and the massively influential Chinese demographic (which has shown overwhelmingly in market research to prefer the design trends that Riot are currently gunning for: sexy, bland and 'appealing').
The far more tragic reality is that Riot *already* has tonnes of artists a lot like Skyen already working for them, doing their best to rail against the creatively bankrupt waifu/husbando generating machine that Riot has become without losing their jobs.

The 1st version you showed sell the unhinged monstrous side that he was trying to conceal as warden during the days in the Blessed Isles and i really like it that claiming his humanity made him more of a monster than a human. 10/10 would definitely be a banger of a skin if was released and ties up well too for the lore.

I'm two years late for this but oh god, this first redesign looks genuinely terrifying to a degree I don't think any champion really gets to. It's still not horror movie material, but his face really sells it to me, just the barely human face of a monster.

Personally I really like the 2nd design more. It keeps him... relatable for lack of a better word. It goes back to that idea you put forth, "You probably have met a person like Thresh in real life". It keeps in mind that above all of the monster that Thresh has become he started as a man. By seeing what he was and has become it kinda makes you want to strive to be a better person.

I personally really like the cool "skeletor look", as you call it, that the ruination gave him, so seeing the max power unbound Thresh while keeping his original design in mind and basically enhancing it, would have been pretty cool to see in my opinion. Other than that though, you make really good points in this, and the human Unbound Thresh that you made I think looks pretty good.
My opinion to unbound Thresh is that its mostly looks boring less interessting than the Base. Also it feels borderline scamy that they sell a Lore Book that they choose to ignore anyway.
But your and Lauras designs look so much more interessting. The Mounstrous design looks like a Proper Update to Thresh an Monster in Humanoid Shape.
The Human Side looks dark regal and menacing scary. It has a certain Vlad the Impaler Vibe to it and it looks like Human Thresh. I especialy like the Latern Staff and Crown Design.
Atleast in my Headcanon one of those two will be the true Unbound Thresh depending on how the story continues.

Your human version of this skin looks absolutely amazing and I would definetely pay for it. But I prefer it over your first redesign, which is good too btw, but it just looks too similar to basic Thresh for me. Nevertheless you did a fantastic job!

Something I wish they had done with the lore for thresh is imply that he’s bound to the shadow isles… like… the black mist/the first ruination bound him there and he’s using Viego to siphon enough power to “break his chains” and escape. This would also work into the animation where he’s found in Noxus. this is a glamour he wears in Noxus so he doesn’t get caught by the Noxian government or the Black Rose and he can feast as much as he wants. So he’s “unbound” in the sense that he’s no long held there and can harvest souls wherever he wants without being caught. Almost a “false hydra” from D&D but alluring and then hiding in plain sight rather than underground. It would work with his lore, and it would give him another layer of villainy in addition to wanting to become king of the shadow isles

I love your input. I think it’s valid and above and beyond. I think the fundamental issue that I’m becoming more aware of after watching your videos is that RIOT is operating two projects at the same time, one where they create champions with a deep lore and world building for players who care for that, and one where they appeal to players who just want cool looking, and easy to digest characters which not much depth, and they have no interest in bridging the two for financial reasons. The only way i see them making the effort two connect the dots is if players demanded that they do exactly that and keep vocalizing that they want rich world building and cohesive characters to boot, not just one with disregard for the other.
With the second redesign Thresh was made into Jafar in look and in lore hahaha

The human unbound version of Thresh reminds me a lot of the leader of the Drukhari (the Dark Elves) in Warhammer 40,000: Asdrubael Vect.
They both start as nobodies, and both have risen to the point where they can employ the dark attraction of absolute power wielded by the absolutely corrupt. Vect and Thresh also share a common power source: human suffering. Definitely worth a look!

I really like your second design for him. Making him a creepily smiling human really sells that he is motivated by sadistic joy and hunger for power; very human emotions.
I don't play league of legends, I'm just a nerd about art and character design and this guy is great at talking about it
24:10 I would propose exactly that. Legendary skin of Thresh, throwing the staff like a spear or a javelin would be so epic. Then at the target location, it would be jabbed under a sharp angle in the ground and green ruination-like cracks would spread from the centre to the edges. A green mist would come out of those cracks as an indicator of its range.
But what would he throw it for? In his kit nothing would make sense with a staff. Maybe he can slam his staff into the ground to cast his ult but that's about all I could imagine the staff being useful for.

It would hover just above his staff and pulsing with power (the entire concept of "unbound" thresh is the fact that he has more power than what he knows to do with after all). To me, throwing the whole staff instead of just the lantern makes more sense anyway as the champion picking the lantern up has a way to actually hold on to it.
The basic concept of his lantern transporting champions across small distances is questionable in the first place from the lore perspective as Thresh does not have the kind of personality to help out others. The lantern itself is pretty much an extremely simplified black hole for souls. The staff's effects would be amplifying the idea of Thresh putting his power level on display and could be an excuse for him helping his teammates out. The "look how much power I have" and "you need my assistance" kind of intimidating move.

I love the second design the most. Something about it was just so incredibly pleasing to me, and I think giving thresh a crown instead of floaty dreadlocks was a particularly big improvement. Thresh to me is someone who grabs at symbols of power and holds them just as close as he holds the tortured souls in his lantern.
Would he paint himself in a mask of attractiveness with a shallow f**kboy face and silly abs that look like one of those 'manly chefs aprons' on him? Actually yes, I could picture him doing that. But if there was a crown up for grabs? You can be damn sure that crown would be the first thing he put his claws on.
My god this 2nd design kinda gives the vibes of a ghost king version of little finger to me, which honestly fits him perfectly. He really looks like someone who reached the top by backstabbing and betraying everyone who trusted him and who is overall a really petty monster.
Your mindset is such a breath of fresh air on TH-cam! I mean the beginning of the third segment is such a more mature way of thinking about thoughts and ideas than most media ever portray.
I agree. What TB Skyen does a lot better than the average Internet user is that he arguments his opinions, he accepts different opinions and doesn't think he just knows better, and that he fosters constructive discussion. It's a great approach to any kind of discussion, especially art. But it's difficult, it requires effort, it's not as immediate and "fast food" consumable, and thus it's not as popular online

As a Thresh fan and main. I loved your Unbound Thresh turned up to an 11. Well done. The more human option is really really good with filling the "need" to be human for Wild Rift. Riot would do well to hire the artist of these and honestly minds like yours to their creative team.
So now my head canon is that thresh was Runeterra's prime Karen.
So basically Unbound Thresh is like if Karen had the power they always wanted they would become just hot enough to get whatever they want.

As a freelance artist, I appreciate VERY much the fact that you took the time and money to commission an artist, it strengthens your vision and supports visual creators. People would just use shitty ass photoshop skills to bash together pre-existent work, while that's not necessarily good or bad per say... I don't like when people do that (unless it's for comedic reasons). My respect to you sir.

I really like Spirit Blossom Thresh because it felt like a one-time special thing where him being ridiculously handsome and sexy doesn't really matter within a different setting and the whole VN stuff going on.

I loved the first redesign, it's a great mix of captivating and horrifying.
As for lore reasons for why he's human I have an idea; thresh, after 1000 years of tormenting the same thousands of souls even their spirits unbound by the limits of flesh scream less and don't cry as hard as they used to due to so much time in anguish. So when demacians pure of heart and virtue invade his land he for the 1st time in so long gets a taste of untampered souls, relishing in this forgotten level of pleasure from his tortures. And with that he channels them to regenerate his bodily prison of flesh and now roams runeterra picking souls of the living like a farmer in a time if harvest
Tell me whatcha think. I know it doesn't fit well with his king of the shadow isles direction but it's just my immediate idea
