Who Wrote the Bible? An Overview of Divine Inspiration and Human Authorship

  • If you've ever asked your pastor or Sunday school teacher, "Who wrote the Bible?" you probably got one of two responses:
    1. "God wrote the Bible." The Holy Spirit moved prophets like Moses and apostles like Paul to write about God's relationship with the world (1 Ti 3:16; 2 Pe 1:20-21).
    2. "About 40 people wrote the Bible." The individual books were written by many authors over many years in many places to many different people groups.
    In a way, both of these answers are true, but by now you're probably looking for a little more detail about the authors of the Bible. And rightly so: when you're studying a book or passage of the Bible, it's pretty important to know who wrote it.
    But there's a lot of nuance that goes into answering this question. The Bible didn't fall out of heaven, and it was a long time in the making.

    1. See the whiteboard still names of the 40 (traditional) biblical authors here: overviewbible.com/authors-who...

Please get a microphone and get it fast. Lol that is your only missing piece that'll take your quality to the top and it's easier for ppl to listen to in a moving car. I will buy you one brother if I have to. Maybe start with a nice codenser mic and have it pointing up towards you but below the camera then graduate to the mic that attaches to your shirt. One thing about how Luke pulls in Eyewitness testimony...
    They were still alive when he was writing, as it was barely 2-3 decades since the Resurrection when it's Finished being written.
    We don't generally get that in texts that were intended for recording history before the Dark Ages.
    They were generally speaking, written down some 2-4 Centuries after the events described.

    I never understood how you can trust 40 men specifically when some of them are unknown to write the bible and then consider it as a holy book. Not mentioning the different versions, the different translations... The bible we have today is book but can't be holy book...

    • @pw2738
      @pw2738 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I understand what you're saying, however, as you really further your knowledge of the bible you will come to understand that it truly is a remarkable book. First of all, you're right that men wrote the bible BUT they were inspired to write the bible by an Almighty God. There is only one original manuscript of the bible and you're also right that many translations have been created. However, the essence of the original manuscript has not been altered. Maybe worded in such a way as to have one interpret a scripture incorrectly but as that same one does further bible research they will come to the correct interpretation.
      Moreover, EVERY bible verse from Genesis to Revelations is connected to minimally one other scripture in the bible but can be connected to several scriptures in the bible. In short, all the scriptures in the bible are inter-connected and most of the writers didn't even know each other. That was done by a Divine Author.
      In addition, God's name was mentioned in the original bible manuscripts 7,218 in the form of a tetragrammaton. When it was translated, the translators thought that God's name was too Holy to mention, so it was replaced with the title," LORD". In EVERY bible translation and version if you look at the scriptures where God's name was replaced by "LORD' all versions and translations uppercase LORD or mention His name. EXAMPLES: Genesis 2:4 Exodus 3:2 Leviticus 1:1 Joshua :1 Matthew 1:20 John 1:231 Corinthians 1:31 Galatians 3:6 Hebrews 2:13 Jude 5 revelations 1:8. Every bible books have literally hundreds of these examples (keep in mind that God's name was written 7,218 times in the original manuscripts). [if you put a scripture in bible hub online it will give you countless versions at one time]
      Lastly, the bible is about 40% prophecy, and every version and translation write the prophecies exactly as the original manuscripts. The year Jesus was born was prophesied by Daniel centuries in advance that all versions and translations reveal. The bible also prophesized, in Daniel, the exact date in which Jesus would finally assume the crown of King in His Heavenly Father's kingdom-which was 1914, centuries in advance. The bible is truly an AMAZING book and the more you learn about it and search out the countless treasures in it, you will clearly understand that its Author is definitely Divine in Nature.

    To answer this question you should've mentioned names of all the authors and explained who the authors were, what they did, and why what they said would hold credibility. Is the bible we have now the same as it was when revealed? Did all the authors meet Jesus? How long after Jesus was it written down? How do we reconcile with contradictions In the bible? if God had fully inspired the Bible, why are there contradictions and mistakes in the bible, when God can never make any mistakes.

    • @OverviewBible
      @OverviewBible  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is impossible to list the names of all the documents' authors (even if we assume traditional authorship, which is … janky at best).
      But to answer your questions:
      *"Is the bible we have now the same as it was when revealed?"* No, because "the Bible" was never "revealed." A few authors describe revelatory visions, but the text of the Bible was composed and edited over long periods of time. There is no moment when God says, "These 66-81 documents are my authorized words."
      Furthermore, the documents themselves have undergone changes. You don't need to look any further than the last chapter of Mark or the beginning of John chapter 8.
      *"Did all the authors meet Jesus?"* Absolutely not. This would be impossible, as the majority of the text in the Bible we have today was composed long before Jesus lived.
      *"How long after Jesus was it written down?"* Most of the New Testament were composed between 50 C.E. and 100 C.E., and I think most scholars accept a range of 50 C.E.-150 C.E. for the writing of the whole New Testament.
      *"How do we reconcile with contradictions In the bible?"* Accept that a collection of religious works written by different people with different rhetorical goals in different social settings and different time periods are going to address some concepts and issues differently. The Bible wasn't written to be a history textbook.
      *"If God had fully inspired the Bible, why are there contradictions and mistakes in the bible, when God can never make any mistakes?"* The Bible is filled with stories of God working through (imperfectly executed) human action. I don't see why we would expect the Bible to be the one thing humans executed perfectly.
      I hope this helps! =)

      @@OverviewBible thank you so much! You have been amazing!!!!! Since Jesus never said he was God and clearly denied being God, do you leave a possibility that he's a man sent by God and not God, I.e. a prophet of God. I Love Jesus and believe he's a prophet of God and God is one, there is no God besides the one God and God can not be imagined, and seeing God through Jesus only means the messenger of God with his amazing qualities is a testimony to the truth of the one God. I'm very curious to know what you think :)

    • @OverviewBible
      @OverviewBible  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a lot to unpack here. First, there's plenty of New Testament material on Jesus and his Father being distinct persons. However, the authors of the New Testament are quite keen on pointing out that Jesus fully represents God-sometimes within the same story.
      For example, before Jesus' arrest, the Gospel of John quotes him telling his disciples to "believe in God, believe also in Me (John 14:1). In the same conversation, Jesus claims that anyone who has seen him has also seen the Father (John 14:9).
      Another example: The resurrected Christ tells Mary Magdalene that he will ascend to "my Father and your Father, to my God and your God" (John 20:17). However, just a few verses later in the story of Jesus making his rounds of post-resurrection appearances, Thomas declares that Christ is both his Lord and his God-and rather than clearly denying this, Jesus does not correct him, but blesses those who can reach the same conclusion without needing the physical evidence that Thomas did (John 20:28-29).
      The authors of the New Testament believed that Jesus Christ was the exact representation of God's nature in a way that was distinct from previous messengers (Hebrews 1:1-3), that Jesus had been given all authority in heaven and on earth-including authority over angels (Matthew 28:18; 1 Peter 3:22), that Jesus was the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end (Revelation 22:12-16), that Jesus was in very nature God (Philippians 2:6), that Jesus was raised from the dead and ascended to the right hand of God (Matthew 26:64; Luke 22:69; Acts 7:55-56), and that Jesus is appointed by God to judge the living and the dead (Acts 10:42). That's one heck of a prophet. ;-)
      Here's my (maybe) hot take: What you think about Jesus isn't as important as what you do about Jesus. Whether he was an eternal God incarnate or simply a faithful messenger of one eternal God, he still made it clear what he wanted his listeners to do. "This is my command: Love each other." (John 15:17)

    • @PR-cq4zc
      @PR-cq4zc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is NOT what the bible says. Jesus Himself testified that Moses wrote the Torah. Read John 5, Luke 24, and other similar passages. God inspired approx. 40 men to write what He intended us to read. (2 Tim 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20)

      Do you believe Psalm 80 is inspired how do you interpret that?
      Might I insist on determining authorship based on what the evidence points to? The evidence, in this case, points towards multiple authors of the Torah just to be clear: the Torah itself is as if someone decided to combine Mark, John, and the Gospel of Thomas into a big book. The Torah was written by one non-priest and two priests, one of those priests was a Levite naturally he supported the interests of the Levites by raising Levi and denigrating Moses, he makes claims such as only Levites can be priests (Numbers 18:7 while Duet.18:1-3) says all Levites can be priests. The source P shows Levites being in a good relationship with the royal family, as well as supporting centralization. Something else that is unique to the P source is the similarities between P and Ezekial (ask for details), I could go on for some time about the Torah. Another thing to notice is that 4 sources based on the linguistic features date before the year 1000, not 1300 when Moses was supposed to live.
      READ IT BELIEVE IT
      I would like to say a few things about the verses you just sighted firstly, John is the latest and most unreliable document about the life of Jesus. It robs what all the other gospels have to say about Jesus, John changes the original teachings of Jesus found in the gospel of Mark (where Jesus does not call himself God (that is places in red) and over proclaims the coming kingdom) the gospel of John which changes Jesus's message to that of a more greek speaking people (proclaiming to be God and no longer worried about the coming kingdom)
      The Epistles were not written by Paul himself their writing is vastly different from the rest of Paul's letters, they are addressed to a leader of the church instead of the elders of the church (which is the reason the made into the bible read orthodoxy and heresy in early Christianity) and differ significantly of their view about women (Paul says no one should get married 1 Cor. 7:18, and that we are saved through grace Ephesians 2:8-9. The Epistles, on the other hand, teach a vastly different message (woman are saved through childbearing 1 Tim 2:16, that you ought to be married 1 Timothy 5:14)
      Don't get me started on Luke or Peter

    I think that the issue of who wrote the bible is irrelevant. There is a very high chance that many of the stories in the bible came about through hearsay I think that Jesus customized his teachings for his audience - judging by his parables. Also, teaching through parables would be less likely to be adulterated by the effects of Chinese whispers.Stories about the actions of Jesus may well have been distorted as it they were passed from person to person via word of mouth most likely at farmer's markets in the area. I also think that Jesus may have suffered the same fate as The Stig (from Top Gear - some say he knows only two facts about ducks and both of them are wrong). That is, he was a man of some mystery who, according to Josephus was known as a wise teacher.His miracles were reported from person to person. Did people at the time believe in him or in the stories they heard?

So conclusion none of the gospel authors are who the bible claims they are thats why all of them according to a apostle and not by an apostle

      Believe on Jesus as your savior today: He died, was buried, and rose again on the third day for your sins. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
      God wants a relationship with you! Call out to Jesus today and tell him that you believe in what he did for you on the cross.
      Also, start reading the Bible. A great place to begin is the book of John.

    So the prophets THEMSELVES wrote the books? No , I dont think so, because most of the books in the bibles old testamony,ALL books in the old testamony , its concluded that all books has at least two or three , sometimes more scribes , and that the bible scholars that do this kind of research, can conclude that because, the style and emphasis are changed through out the different books, the testamonies of the new testamonies are somewhat diffrent ( they have a one author snd Luke is probably written by one person)but the considred first testamony of Mark , and hes testamony ended and the women at the grave run away and did not tell anyone what they had heard or seen ( an angel in the grave telling them to tell the apostels that Jesus is going to meet them at Genesarets lake, )but that was added to , 8 new versus were someone elaborates upon Marks testamony.

    Let's talk about some of the contradictions in the bible.
    1.)Does god want everyone to go to hell?
    God wants everyone to go to heaven.
    "God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved." 1 Timothy 2:3-4
    "The Lord is ... not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
    God wants some to go to hell.
    "The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil." Proverbs 16:4
    "He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them." John 12:40
    "Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth". Romans 9:18
    "God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned." 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12
    This is a contradiction. Your god does not exist.
    2.) From what were the animals created?
    From water
    "And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven." Genesis 1:20
    From out of the ground
    "And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air." Genesis 2:19
    This is a contradiction. Your god does not exist.
    You can take a look at all 492 contradictions in the bible here.
    www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/contra/by_name.html
    To anyone reading this, you can live a good moral life without a god. Live your life like it is the only life you will have. We atheists believe that human experience and rational thinking provide the only source of both knowledge and a moral code to live by. We reject the idea of knowledge 'revealed' to human beings by gods, or in special books filled with contradictions.
    "Humanity has believed in 4000 different gods throughout our history. Your religion says 3999 of those gods don't exist. Atheists believe 4000 of those gods don't exist."

    • @OverviewBible
      @OverviewBible  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These verses don't say what you say they're saying, Renzo. For the first "contradiction," you talk about God wanting people to go to heaven and/or hell-but the verses you've referenced don't mention either. You might be surprised by the levels of nuance when it comes to how people of faith interpret these texts.
      There's plenty of room to discuss contradictions in the Bible. But if you want to effectively dismantle the Christian faith, you'll need to develop a stronger understanding of what you're working against. ;-)

    • @OverviewBible
      @OverviewBible  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@renzovallejos6129 Thanks for the video recommendation. Again, not denying the idea of contradictory thoughts in the Bible-that's a rich discussion topic, one that I might take on in a future video. But just like cherry-picking Scripture isn't a very convincing tactic when arguing in FAVOR of the Bible, a rapid-fire list of juxtaposed (and cherry-picked) quotes from Scripture isn't very convincing when it comes to dismantling it. It could be a really interesting video series working through these juxtapositions one by one. There's a wealth of (ancient) context and discussion that gets lost when you're rattling through these one after the other.
      But perhaps one of the most important things to consider here is that there are many, many approaches to Scripture that orthodox Christians take. I'm not familiar with Barker's theological background-but while I could see these arguments being devastating to some who might hold a fundamentalist view of Scripture, they're old news to those who view it from a more critical standpoint.

    "When we say…Jesus Christ…was produced without sexual union, and was crucified and died, and rose again, and ascended to heaven, ***we propound nothing new or different*** *from what you believe regarding those whom you call Sons of God. [In fact]…if anybody objects that [Jesus] was crucified, this is in* ***common*** *with the sons of Zeus (as you call them) who suffered, as previously listed [he listed Dionysus, Hercules, and Asclepius].* Since their fatal sufferings are all narrated as not similar but different, so his unique passion should not seem to be any worse."
    *Note how Justin (Martyr) is less of a fool than modern Christian apologists. He admits that differences don’t matter.* Since each and every one of the suffering and dying gods are slain by different means, one cannot argue the mytheme requires exactly the same means of death. “But Osiris can’t have inspired the Jesus myth because Osiris wasn’t nailed to a cross” is a stupid argument. The mytheme is simply death. Being killed. Suffering and dying. The exact mode of death can vary freely. It makes no difference to the existence and influence of the mytheme. It’s simply the particular instantiation of a generic abstraction. *And Justin’s argument (that Satan invented these fake religions to confuse people) entails Justin agreed the mytheme existed: indeed, it was demonically promulgated, multiple times. Intentionally.*
    *Likewise, Justin notices the mytheme is not virgin birth, but sexless conception. Of which many examples had already been popularized in pagan mythology (there just happens to also have been examples of actual virgin born gods as well). And by his argument (that the Devil was deliberately emulating the Jesus mytheme, in advance), Justin clearly accepted the same principle for “rising again” after death:* the particular exact metaphysics of the resurrection could, like the exact method of death or conception, vary freely. The mytheme consists solely of the abstraction: returning to life. Somehow. Some way. We will say bodily, at the very least. But what sort of body (the same one, a new one, a mortal one, an immortal one), didn’t matter. *If it had, Justin would have made the argument that “those gods” weren’t really resurrected. But that argument, never occurs to him. Nor did it to any other apologist of the first three centuries.*
    *Ancient Christians well knew there was nothing new about their dying-and-rising god. Not in respect to the mytheme.* Their claims were solely that his particular instantiation of it was better, and the only one that actually happened. *They didn’t make up the stupid modern arguments that dying-and-rising god myths didn’t exist or weren’t part of a common mytheme everyone knew about. For example, in the same century, Tertullian, in Prescription against Heretics 40, makes exactly the same argument as Justin. Funny that. They had better access to the evidence than we do. They knew what was really and widely the case. We should listen to them.*

      Hey, I'm right here: you can use second person pronouns. ;-)
      I'm not sure how helpful it is to throw around concepts like "reliable" or "unreliable" unless you're willing to share what you'd be relying on them for.
      For example, my coffee table was reliable for supporting a few books and mugs, but very, very unreliable when it came to supporting the weight of my body when I tripped and fell (RIP, coffee table).
      If we're relying on something to fulfill a purpose for which it was not intended, it's going to seem pretty unreliable. But that has just as much to do with the expectations we bring to the object as it does with the object itself--perhaps more so. ;-)

    Ultimately it was The Father that had The Bible written. Through a selection of Holy/ righteous Israelite men. They were so righteous that they were able to have holy angels to deliver to them The Word of God. Each time in the old Testament a Holy angel showed up they came in the presence of The Lord bearing the same record that came from The Father. They always spoke the words of The Father because the very words within The Bible are His. In fact, it is Jesus Christ that gives The Word to the holy angels after The Father gives it to Jesus Christ. He was God before He descended to the body that was prepared for Him by The Father. The Father put in the hands of Jesus Christ in the beginning to create everything in Genesis. The spiritual order of things is: God The Father bears record to The Son, God The Son bears record to the holy angels and the holy angels delivers it to the Israelites to take and teach to the other people groups for them to become spiritual Israel since they aren't physically Israelites. Israel is the representation of how The Lord wants ALL people to live. There's nothing mysterious about who wrote it or had it written. Truth be told Moses or any of the righteous men that had parts in writing the words wouldn't take credit for it because they wrote in The Bible exactly what The Lord wanted in The Bible. All the prophets and apostles bear the same record. And being that man is flesh beings with a dense mind. It was necessary for The Lord to have things wrote within The Bible more than once for a reason by different servants of Him. Once the new Testament was being wrote and Jesus Christ was born there was no need for holy angels to deliver The Word of God to man because you could get it straight from Jesus Christ up close in person. After He died then ascended to where NO MAN can go(which is in the 3rd heaven where The Father is) then the holy spirit came in the form of The Bible. So when you read The Bible with the understanding and wisdom that can only come from The Lord, then you are full of The Holy spirit. No holy entity will enter into you. If that's the case everyone would be consistently living righteously.

      Regarding your "moral obligation" comment:
      1. You might want to check out my about page to see what the purpose of this channel is. I started this channel specifically so that there would be a resource that _doesn't_ presuppose what people do or should believe about the Bible, and instead focuses on what can be observed. My goal is to raise literacy about the Bible-it's where my strengths lie.
      2. The scope of my subscriber base and readership is pretty broad in terms of what people believe, and that's on purpose. I'm not perfect in my execution, but I make resources that should be just as useful in a Sunday school classroom as they would be in an atheist discussion group. I don't serve a unified audience, and deconstructing every possible (or even every common) culturally-held belief is, quite frankly, beyond my capacity at this point.
      3. Much of the material I write _is_ in conflict with some folks' pre-held suppositions about the Bible-this video included. (For example, many Christians believe that the words of the Bible were directly given to humans from God, and the idea of scribes and scholars editing documents over time is an offensive one.) It could be that I'm mistakenly reading bad faith into your comments (if so, I apologize), but it seems like you mean to imply that I refrain from challenging commonly held assumptions about the Bible. If that's the case, I don't think this critique holds up against my body of work.
      4. A word from one creator to another: when you reach a given level of exposure, there will always be people criticizing your content because it doesn't say or show what _they_ think it should. I make this content in my spare time because I love it. You can take moral issue with the fact that this channel is encyclopedic in nature and not apologetic, but if I were to hold myself to the obligations that every commenter foisted upon me, I wouldn't get anything done. From my perspective, there are plenty of people doing a great job making deconstruction resources for people questioning their beliefs, and even more people pressing the kinds of questions that people would benefit from asking themselves. I saw an under-met need in this space for faith-agnostic biblical literacy content, and that's the need I'm trying to help meet. =)
      I hope you have a fine day, and I hope you're able to get back into making music content soon!

      @@OverviewBible Just checked out your about page.
      I really like your concept of erasing beliefs and getting down to pure knowledge.
      I guess my complaint/suggestion is to be more clear about presenting your "What you should know (about the Bible)" vs. "What you should believe (about the Bible)" in each video.
      As in: reinforce the importance of "knowing" and the importance of questioning "believing" as a clear thread in every video. Sometimes it comes across as multiple possible "believings" and then your viewer can choose which version to "believe." So no net progress.
      There are millions upon millions of people who have only beliefs and do not even realize that believing is not knowledge. Preachers and teachers have been presenting their beliefs "as if" they were unquestionable knowledge for centuries and this has to stop.
      Whether believer, agnostic, atheist, Christian, non-Christian religion or philosophy, everyone needs to take a step back and strip away the overlays of beliefs and assumptions.
      We need to become spiritual archeologists with no preconceptions.
      To the extent you can point out preconceptions and mere beliefs and remind people to clean off the sludge and get down to pure knowledge you can be a powerful force in the world.
