    I'm glad to see there are still plenty of people outside of China who can appreciate these types of forms. So many people, especially in the USA are all about MMA, or how effective certain techniques are in a real fight. Even if these forms look like dances, I can definitely see how they can cultivate your body and mind. To be able to perform these forms well, require skill and some athleticism.

      I totally agree... martial arts is not just one thing. There's lots of different interpretations and that's okay. A lot of the traditional guys though will claim their style is good for self defense but won't put in any effort to cultivate their style for real combat. They're ultimately lying to themselves and the people who they train

But, looking for another Sifu (after mine left the area) gave me a sampling of many Chinese MA schools and, invariably, they were all about forms, supposed "chi power", too deadly to spar yada yada, so, even though I train it, I'm also bad mouthing Chinese arts along with the rest.

    I like how they really kind of represent the animals.
    The mantis one is quick, small movements and nimble, being small forces it to defend itself, but it will not fall without fighting.
    The dragon one is moving in one direction with big steps, almost like its showing off, it shows greatness and power, thinking nothing will step on his way, but he wouldn’t have claws if that was the case.
    And the snake keeps it low, only coming up when its cornered, moving side to side as quick as possible, it might not be the strongest, but its also not the weakest.

      @@TheBrendon67 Quite true! Master Yuan Xiu Gang, who is the master of the school I'm showing here says just that. He has trained MMA fighters, not to go in the ring, they train that at their own MMA gym, but to be more well rounded. They work on the things that Wudang culture and martial arts are good at, flexibility, coordination, balance. Not only physically, but mental balance, focus and discipline too. They do sparring every day at the school, but they are not doing groundwork or training for MMA competitions. The MMA and Wudang don't have to be mutually exclusive, they can be trained together to round a person out if they would like to fight in the ring/cage.

      Learn martial arts, not to fight? I’m sorry, but what’s the point of learning how to kick someone in the face if you’re not trying to learn how to... get this... kick someone in the face?
      If you want to exercise, then there are ways to exercise that don’t give you a false sense of confidence in your ability to fight someone who’s seriously trying to hurt you. If you want balance and inner peace, there are ways to achieve that without learning ineffectual ways of thrusting your hands in someone’s face in the middle of a fight.

      These are from Wudang. Shaolin and Wudang are two of the major types of martial arts in China. Shaolin is based in Buddhism and Zen, and Wudang is based in Taoism (Daoism) and the concepts of the iChing and Dao De Jing. Shaolin and Wudang have a certain amount of animal styles. Tai Chi is based on a legend of Zhang San Feng seeing a snake a and crane fighting and it inspired him in his martial arts. So, it has some animal based movements, but isn't a specific animal style. I'm not as familiar with bagua, but I don't think it has the same basis in animal movements. It's main feature is circularity, the iChing and yin and yang concepts.

    Can any of these dancers actually fight?

    • @DaWeiGongfu
      @DaWeiGongfu 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, they practice sparring daily and fight in competitions. I'm in the process of making a video with the first demonstrator fighting two people in a sparring match, back to back (not at the same time).
      The forms (dance) helps with balance, speed, and technique. A lot like bag work (which they also do) and shadow boxing in western boxing.

  • @TheUnclefester13
    @TheUnclefester13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The forms were not meant to be a way of fighting, but rather a way of remembering. A moving encyclopedia. In my study of karate, I found out most of what was called “blocks” could be used as strikes, and what I considered strikes could be used as blocks. Then later I found out the strikes and blocks were the basic movements for escapes, locks, and throws. And also cataloged pressure points placements and angles they were to be attacked. My style has hundreds of katas. But with the layers of information each kata contained you could study the basics for a year and still not glean all the info they contained.
