- In this clip my teacher Zhou Zhen Dong breaks down some common uses and strategies of the Mantis Hook hand that is the characteristic of our style. This clip is taken from an interview I conducted with him a couple of years ago, but now I've invested in new editing software I wanted to redo it.

Such an underrated style. I love the thought behind the movements as he explains them. The concepts are great for combat and can be seen in several styles, not just Chinese Kung Fu. Very interesting.
The Mantis is renown for its speed and explosive power. Master Zhou is really good, a true "Master".
Love to see northern mantis being explained. It takes the moves beyond the forms.
Even so you see clearly his hooking hands, the characteristic of how he moves his arms reminds me more on monkey fist. But I think monkey fist is also a part of Tang Lang.
Monkey is indeed one of the 18 “ancestors” that Mantis is comprised of.
In northern praying mantis styles the footwork used is based on the movement of the monkey. But I have to admit after seeing this amazing high level master in action that his arm movements do look and share a lot in common with the monkey-style hand techniques that are used in traditional monkey styles.
I enjoyed this. As someone who once practiced 7* religiously, I’d never known of striking the eyes during the “catches cicada” movement. That seems way more dynamic, and you get a strike in rather than just giving up two hands for one limb (y)
This guy can move! Thanks for the awesome video !
Love the combative understanding and application☯️☸️🙏🏽
what an awesome master
Powerful, explosive and deceptive...definitely Mantis 💜
A lot of the sweeping moves are similar to the tai chi I learnt. You am see the focus and intent in this old guy. An inspiration for sure
1:39 Waist chop
1:50 Jade ring Hands
3:45 Mantis Double Seal
This form is the birth of the Okinawa karate kata Naihanchi? Looks remarkably similar.
theres a hong kong documentary series that traced the origins of karate to the crane style... think the series was called kung fu oddysey or martial arts oddysey or somehing like that it was an awesome series.... i think its on youtube... theres also a great japanese channel on yt, obi kurobi or something thats sort of reverse and its the japanese masters tracing martial arts... and theres a japanese wushu or kung fu master who is awesome... i dont understand japanese but its fascinating how he shows his fellow country men how moves have evolved or different
There’s also my own series with Jesse Enkamp
Karate is a descendant of gung fu, so it would make sense that it looks similar.
Descendant of southern Kung fu styles from Fujian province, nothing to do with northern stuff like Mantis
@@MonkeyStealsPeach there's a southern mantis too though. For example there's a studio in Queensland, Australia, that does southern mantis.

Tres bon ça
Love it!
Fantastic demonstration. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome stuff!
Taiji Mantis is interesting, very different from Hong Kong's 7 star I learned. I feel a bit of Tongbei in your shenfa, do they have any connection?
As a style moves away from its place of origin its only natural it will undergo changes. Both Mantis and Tongbei are popular styles in the region, so its only natural they would have a similar flavour.
You put excellent content, keep on going
Love this stuff 🙏👌thanks as always Will
mantis is so underrated man, i love to watch it, no wonder that we have the bam boo kuen form in our hunggar style as well, some technoques i even made working in sparing😅
A structural break down of the adversary by controlling and striking makes sense.
Superb
How generous this Chinese demonstrate. So generous
Good flow of hand movements. Great Sifu
thanks for the teaching
This was really cool man. Great vid 🤙🏽
Great explanation!!!!
Thank you for this gift. ♾✌🏽❤️
Very useful technique! Thank you!
Love, love, love
Correction, it's called *Stealing* hands, not "sealing" hands.
No, stealing hand is a different movement. This is sealing hands - 封手 feng shou
Very cool applications
Exellent teknique! Thanks!
Very interested how you move
Siper j'aime
thanks
He’s still very fast despite being a senior! If he in his 60s?
he looks like 70s 80s... its in the genes lol... if youve had the pleasure to meet masters then you will understand what a master means in the east... they are ancient and you know old man strength and speed.... the caricatures of little old yoda guy is all true... it makes sense in the east anyway that a master is wisened and ancient by definition... i would be sceptical if he master was a 20 yr old heck even 40yr old
Expert
Hao Gung Fu!!!!
So fast, he is good.
real kung fu
How young is he?
Nearly 70
@@MonkeyStealsPeach the legs are the first to go but not yet for him.
Does tai chi mantis have the same internal principals as tai chi?
No
Thumbs for the Sifu.
Thumbs up for the Sifu.
Muaythai clinching is the best
Возможно, он даже победит чхарька

Fingers are much much harmful than fists.
No they’re not
I would have expected a demonstration of the application of this technique to be done at actual speed with an aggressive attacker. Slow motion is not the real world.
In combat, the situation is unpredictable, if you apply this to your opponent, it is going to be useless
I doubt
But you know all that stuff is theoretisch. He'd get knocked out in the ring in under a minute.
Why are people still posting arcane martial arts forms?
Because they are part of what is called Intangible Cultural Treasures and because of that they need to be respected and understood for what they are. Fighting in a ring is of course another matter.

Dude just let them be. If you don’t like it don’t watch it, simple
You forgot that Martial Arts like Muay Thai and Wushu Sanda are based on traditional martial arts
