As a designer, I respect both designers' and clients' rights to use sites like 99 designs but they're really exploitative and the product may look nice, but it's hardly ever rooted in anything strategic. It forces designers to burn time and energy on work that may not get paid and that's neither fair nor efficient. In the long run, it's also bad for the business because the design process itself is aimed more at winning an aesthetic contest than it is at solving a strategic communication problem. I apologize if this sounds a bit think-piecey... I'm just really not a fan of 99 designs as a concept.

Thanks, Ashley! Yes, I asked for honest feedback so I appreciate hearing your thoughts from a designer's perspective. My impression is that it's similar to Upwork which I also do use to hire for small tasks. But for more strategic, long-term hires I usually don't. Not sure if 99Designs is the same, but that is how I anticipated using it.

@@thelatashajames I think 99 designs is fine for businesses that aren't in a place where they can afford to get serious about branding but still need something pretty to identify themselves with. It's also okay for designers who just need that boost in the early phase of their careers and real-world briefs for portfolio projects (with the bonus of maybe getting paid). I don't think either Upwork or 99 designs are suitable for businesses that need to get serious about branding since the decision is either mostly financial (cheapest reasonable designer on Upwork) or purely aesthetic (99 designs). Branding is such a valuable part of any business and the choice of designer to work with and criteria for satisfactory work should be accorded a lot more gravity. But that's just my opinion, it's not meant to be prescriptive.

@@ashgandawa Sorry, to clarify when I spoke about Upwork I was speaking from my perspective as a freelancer, not a designer's. Over time, I've come to terms with the fact that an Upwork Marketing client probably isn't the ideal client for me, and that's okay. I'm confident in my offer that I don't need to get into a race to the bottom. Again, respect and appreciate your insight, had no intention to offend and am working with a (market rate, paid) non-99D designer right now on other projects.

@@ashgandawa as a long term designer in 99designs , it's very hard to say that their platform isn't quite good , they done pretty good jobs for some ways and wish more progress about the other side , i won several contest and love it all the clients who really satisfied about my designs , as contest taker is a bit harder to win to a contest specially when clients had a less info about their company , its really tricky to spot on the right direction but it's actually challenging .Being a loser makes me pursue to find a better contest suits to my specialty , being a winner is much more happier .

I just had a terrible experience with them. I started my contest with the top prize offered. Designers started signing non disclosure agreements and we were ready to go. 99 Designs, shut my contest down because it was in the wrong heading! They immediately locked me out of the account and I couldn't message the designers to let them know what happened. Wasted everyone's time.

What was wrong with your heading that caused them to block you and did they refund you?

Thank you for the review! I've been looking into a good & fair platform to submit freelance contracts on.
I love how in depth the questionnaire is when submitting a contest.

I think it's only good for beginners to learn with the chance of earning money and building portfolio. Once you're past that, I'd say move on for further growth.
