Cub Cadet lawn tractor won't start - Electrical Fix

  • It's that time of year again. Winter hibernation is over for the good old Cub Cadet 2086 lawn tractor, but all is not well upon revival. No start signal at starter forces Matt to pull out his multi-meter to get this old gal ready for its 20th season.
    The culprit, the notorious PTO switch, will require some quick thinking to get the Kohler 18hp twin up and running. Will Matt succeed, or will the Cub Cadet get the best of him???

    I'm gonna add a tip here if you don't mind. If after you work on your cub cadet for 3 days and you get her running and mash on your forward and reverse pedals and it won't move , check that your transmission lever is pushed in or engaged , LOL. That happened to me last night. Immediately I thought , what have I bypassed !
    Good thing it was bed time so I was forced to go inside. Then it hit me , The trans lever may be disengaged. I ran back out and that was it. Keep your videos coming.

      Great point! Same thing happened to me a few years back. Stored the tractor in my father-in-law’s barn and had to push it around, so I disengaged the trans. When spring came around, forgot about the lever and couldn’t understand why forward/reverse didn’t work! Those are fun fixes when you finally figure them out!!!

    Mine is doing the exact same thing. No 12v to that small blue wire at solenoid with brake actuated.I have pulled my hair out. Im gonna put a jumper on that pto switch to eliminate that. Of course I trashed the ign switch by taking it apart and have one ordered. If its not the pto switch, It may be my brake switch (or reverse switch ? if there is one) that is hard to get to underneath. I bypassed the seat switch and a previous owner has bypassed another switch underneath (brake or reverse switch , not sure which one , its hanging under the dash). Appreciate the video. I would have never figured that out. Catalytic convertors and safety switches need to be outlawed. Thanks again!

      Hi Lego! Glad the video helped! On mine, the start signal goes through the key, the PTO switch and then the brake switch (no reverse switch on my model). I got the hint from a wiring diagram from another Cubcadet model I found online that showed start going through PTO switch. Now we know!! Thanks for watching!!

    I have the same model as you. I bought it from a friend and I've never started it yet but, I went ahead and changed the oil and plugs and now when i try to start it the low oil light is on and it won't crank? I thought I would see if it's getting the 12v to the blue wire like you did. I will also check that seat switch and make sure i'm holding down on the brake. Any other ideas? Thanks for your very informative video.

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m no cub cadet expert, but in general, a low oil light when key is on without engine running is normal because there is in fact no oil pressure. Once the engine starts, and starts making oil pressure, the light should turn off. As for the no start situation, yes check to make sure you have voltage at the starter like in the video. Another trick (that I have to do on mine sometimes) is knock on the starter lightly with a light hammer while trying to start. Sometimes the starter sticks…. Let us know how things work out and thanks for watching!!!

    Thank you kindly for this video. Have hills to climb and love my 2135’s direct drive (like the 2186). Mine clicked couple starts ago. Ok since. Google results point toward solenoid. Others small and seem simple to replace. But 2135/2186 has one large and attached to starter. Any advice on replacing it?

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe you can find just the solenoid at a starter rebuild shop, but usually you replace the whole starter…. I saw a video online where they said that if you hook up a solenoid before the starter (the new solenoid powers the old one) it fixes the clicking problem that these starters are known for. I haven’t tried it myself though….

    I have 3 fuses (inline) could they be bypass? Verey heiful gives me hope of a start

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually fuses wont cause issues unless they are blown. If you change one and it doesn’t blow again, you are good to go. If it blows right away, you have to find the shorted wire or component and fix. Fuses are your friend! 😉

  • @richardnesbitt8368

    I found my problem. The safety switch for the parking brake was not being depressed. My eyesight is not very good but evidently a tab had broke off that comes in contact with the safety switch. Had to remove the deck to find it. I sure didn't worry about fixing it back. I was more concerned about routing the switch to where you could inspect it without tearing the mower apart. I screwed a small plate over the top of the button and black taped it. Now I'm safety switch bypassed all over. Hopefully it won't kill me.
    Thanks for the troubleshooting video. That will come in handy in the future. I have never used a multimeter to trouble shoot anything.

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad you found your issue!!! Like I always say, it’s usually the safety circuit that is causing the problem! Lol! Take care!

    • @zack6892
      @zack6892 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really thought this would be my fix. It was having the same issue but still no start unless I bypass the harness. Are there any other safety’s besides the seat and brake?

    • @richardnesbitt8368
      @richardnesbitt8368 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zack6892 Mine had 3 safety switches. I bypassed the seat and I had to remove the deck to get to the second one. I believe it was the brake. The third one was bypassed by a previous owner and I'm not sure where it was mounted. When I bought the mower I noticed it was hanging from the dash. So I believe there should be 3. My mower is a 2206 about a 2001 model I think.

    • @richardnesbitt8368
      @richardnesbitt8368 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The switch that the previous owner bypassed on mine was probably the reverse safety switch.

      @zack6892 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardnesbitt8368 I found it finally there are two under the deck area the brake and the reverse. What a pain in the butt haha seems the brake no longer was applying pressure to the switch.

    Mine is acting like the engine is froze up, I need it to put my boat in the water. I thought it was the battery, but put new one in it, the started in tries to turn the engine but it is so tight it will not move it, tried putting the plug and turning the engine by hand and it will not move at all.

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah… if you pulled the plugs and it still doesn’t turn over, you might be in trouble… Maybe put some light oil in the cylinder and let it soak a couple days. I revived a couple engines that way in the past…

    What is the relay for? How do you trbl shoot it? continuity?

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The relay is because I couldn’t find a mechanical switch that could handle 200A, so I used a relay instead. Yes, most of the troubleshooting was done by checking continuity. When current does flow where it should be, you are closing in on the problem! Thanks for watching!
