    when you started I thought you were stating the obvious but the more you talk the more charming and insightful I found the video and subscribed. I always say that the paradox of choice has paralysed us now. As a guitarist and home recordist I am bombarded by emails about new gear releases so a good idea is to block these. I got addicted to buying stomp boxes over the years but I remember I was my most creative and prolific when I had less gear. I had less gear because I had less money! Sometimes disposable income is the true enemy although with two kids it means I feel more guilty about buying myself something when I should be putting it away for them. One thing you mention is cheaper gear but an alternative way to kill gas in my view is buy more expensive gear but less of it. So rather than cluttering up with lots of cheap pieces buy the best mic you can, the best interface, the dream mixer and nothing will come close.

      “Gear Saturation Paralysis” can result when you have too many “bells and whistles”. In another way of describing it - the creative “box” is too big.
      It can help to make the “box” smaller. See if you can make something interesting with just one or two randomly chosen tools.

    Gaining fluidity and competence with my current selection of gear will serve me better than that one piece of gear I "need" next. For instance, I was looking at getting a new sequencer. I already have 4 pieces that can serve that purpose well. I need to get good at using those first before I can decide if I need something else.

    I certainly made lots more music when my only means of doing so was a piano and an old Amiga tracker. In the late 90s, I switched to the MC505 groovebox and a Roland D50. I learned it and still know all functions by heart. It has become second nature. In that period, I also made lots of music. Now I have lots of stuff but I only find myself trying to keep things synchronised. I must admit that I don't know my instruments as good anymore as I used to know my MC505.

    When I went modular, I had two primary rules: If I can build it, I won't buy it beyond the PCB and Panel. If It's built, I'm not paying more than 75% of its value. I never want to lose money when I want to trade out my gear!
    I started off buying a bunch of doepfer modules in an A-100 case. Worth roughly $2500, paid $1770. I ended up trading the case for about a dozen modules and a Pittsburgh enclosure that was worth about $1500 new all together. With everything else sold I will have ended up paying about $500 for a $3000 setup. It is possible to get to where you want to be on a budget if you are willing to sell/ trade/ watch for deals. Only buy new when a warrantee is essential!

    • @martingoldmannmusic
      @martingoldmannmusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is something so many of us suffer from! Plugin companies need to make money of course, and their advertising can be brilliant and convincing, as can the endless funneling through forums/Reddit/etc. I was recently listening to projects I did ten or so years ago with much older plugins, and some of them sound arguably as good as what I'm doing now...so I saw very clearly how Plugin Hoarding is a real yet very-unnecessary-to-creating-great-music condition.

    I think the strongest argument in my case against G.A.S is that the limitations set by my current gear truly make me more creative. I watched the whole video and then flipped to the next one before remembering that I'm very irritated about the bulk of synth music videos and channels are dedicated to simply advertising some company's gear, because that's what brings in the money for the "artist", the platform, and the gear sellers.
    I just want to learn "how" to do the things, and am settling for "inspiration for things I can do, once I learn how", which is easily converted to a purchase. The bulk of the content available is simply "Home Shopping Network", and that's really awful.

    • @martingoldmannmusic
      @martingoldmannmusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jep hardware sells ads. However coming from a background as IT journalist back in the last century I remember those statements about us as simply advertising software and hardware. "You are just bought by Microsoft" was a sentence I heard quite often.
      Reviews are a very difficult topic - synths are so hard to test because they are so different. A guitar is always a guitar (with a few differences of course). But the are comparable. Each synth is a different instrument. A, well, this might be a nice video. Thank you for your thoughts :)

      @@martingoldmannmusic My comment was - in some part - intended to thank and encourage you to do more "how to" content, as you seem more amenable to this than the bulk of recommendations I've been getting.
      I've already got... Let's say... "several" thousand dollars in gear, imported from all over the world, and I still don't know how to put whatever noises my synth modules and sequencer(s) make into A) I assume they go into the computer at some point for recording (I don't want a subscription synth/sequencer service), and B) Uhh, whatever comes next, I guess.
      Eventually, I'd like to make a song. I'm struggling to find videos on the basic, beginners', "how to put your noises into the computer and turn it into a song" without either it being a chopped-down sample to sell software, or hardware, or instructional courses that show how to buy the former and maybe achieve the latter after enough semesters.
      Anyways, thanks for listening. The electronics parts are a soothing breeze to me, as that's where I come from. The "use it for music, and also how to music" parts are the cliff that seem harder to climb outside of my youth-fullest years.

    These are great tips! I’m new to the synth world, and after buying the two elektron digi boxes I thought I would be complete… but I’m realizing the feeling of GAS never goes away completely. I also found out it’s easy to reignite that fire for learning and mastering my devices by watching GAS-control videos like this. I recently bought a $10 book with hundreds of drum patterns for me to punch in my Digitakt and learn rhythms of different genres. Keep up these type of videos! It’s almost like therapy.

    I think people who get into buying gear are more collecioners then artists, at the end of the day if you want to make music - you do it with whatever you can; when you are not able to do it - well you move into territory of acquiring new gear to 'improve your music'.... nowadays eyes are more important then ears, even in music:)

  • @thedeepblueskys

    If collecting gear brings you joy so be it. People collect action figures and never take them out the packaging. At least most G.A.S. Folks fiddle with and try out the gear. For me it’s a process of seeing if I vibe with the gear. But I do honestly have too much gear and don’t feel guilty. I tried to choose gear that was much different from the each other. Ironically I have a Roland SP 404 MKii shipping today, and have a Digitakt and Model Samples. As for samplers and players the MS is for outside the house, the Digi for in studio electronic, and the SP 404 will be for both in and outside the studio, for trip hop down tempo style chopping/drumming. The only thing I own that doesn’t make sense is a Moog Mother 32 and Grandmother. There alike in regards to being two mono synth that sound a lot like each other. I also own a DFAM but feel it’s different from the other two Moogs. I may sell the Mother 32 and replace it with the Moog Subharmonicon as it does something different then the DFAM and Grandmother. My Polly’s are a bit different too. Deapmind 12, King Korg, Minilogue, MicroFreak, Sh-01a, JX-08, JD-08, and Digitone. I also have a Behringer TD-3, Moog Theremin, Volca FM, and Korg NTS-1. As for my computer I have Reason 10, and Arturia V collection, NI stuff, and that’s about it. Some mics, and percussion but that’s it. As for controllers, I have MPD 226, Oxygen 49, And all the Arturia Step controllers. I feel with my abstract Vinyl collection and multi tracking interface I have everything I need. There’s really no need to buy anymore gear other then a couple guitars and little odd acoustic instruments. I’ve reach a limit of what the meaning of GAS would be, but they all have different elements of what I desired to create music. Now going forward I should just finish learning all this gear I acquired in the past 3 years and start making music. I’ve made about 4 songs but plan to make an ep soon. I have a concept I want to explore and have all the tools. No need for anything else besides a few desired FX pedals, the new GAS 😂 but once again want them to be unique from the ones I have. Microcosm, and Big Sky. The Chase Bliss stuff is calling me. I love the Zoom MS-70CDR. In theory, all I would need is the Deepmind 12 and SP 404 or Digitakt. The rest is all just flavor differences. I am a prime example of some one with GAS, but like I mentioned I’m at my limit. I don’t plan to sell anything other then the Mother 32 eventually.

      @martingoldmannmusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @thedeepblueskys 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@martingoldmannmusic yes it’s pretty groovy. I really like what the Mood pedal can do a little bit more. All the collecting is primarily for what each piece can do. If it’s similar to something else I think of it as totally unnecessary. So I’m still sizing that one up. I’d rather have a Strymon Time. Much different but I don’t have a complex delay like that. The new Chase pedal kinda does what the Microcosm I have does in some ways.
