I did promise to do Echoes at Pompeii next, but upon realizing it's a 24 minute song I decided to push it off a little longer until I had some time to actually sit down and work on it, so back to the reliable Pulse Concert we go
If you just play it part 1 is 14 minutes and you can play part 2 later.
Part 2 is more 'sounds' for the first half, then goes back to the 'music'. I read they finished the recording back in Paris for some of part 2 along with the editing. Playing just part 1 is what most reactors do, it's fabulous!

The guy on the saxophone is Dick Parry who played it on the original album, pretty cool huh.
This band is so talented, everything they record is gold. I'm 63 and have heard every type of music out there. And Pink Floyd still outshines them all. IMHO
They are solid
If you see the singers in their white dresses then it's the first half and therefore if they are black then it's the second half, never been at a concert like it it was amazing .

They really were
The saxophonist is Dick Parry. He was the sax player on the Dark Side Of The Moon album which included this song. On their big screen it looks like the video for the MTV version of the song. But the MTV version cut a large chunk of the guitar solo out. So it should be avoided. At this concert they actually played the whole Dark Side album in order.
I have heard they played the whole Dark Side album during the 2nd half of the concert. So far I've done 4 songs from this concert. Debating on continuing this instead of doing any studio versions
@@AceofBadeReacts Do studio versions and then the PULSE versions and you can compare them and when it comes to their live performances they're pretty much identical because they're just that good.
Don't worry about radio versions. PF did just music, not songs for comercial radio or TV shows.
It's not that I'm worried about it. It's more that's the version that I heard and comparing it to what I'm hearing in these reactions, it throws me off a bit. I think it's better because we get more and sometimes even the parts I'm used to, they sound better
The base guitarist is Guy Pratt, he was Richard Wright's son in law.

The extended parts that you have been talking about are the intrumental pieces.. and you are right... its the slowed down, jam section in the middle. The verses are in the correct order and sequce though. As I say it's thejam but that the extra for the live performance. The BIG thing about this song and what kicked off their rocketing career in the US was the tempo change... it starts in 7/8, which is unusual for a hit single... but the big switch and what made it such a hit is the time change to 4/4 when the drummers so ham and it kicks into the solos. Master musicians all three of the band and of course they have top notch sidemen to complete the touring band.

You are right in that there was a shorter radio version which was released as a single. The single was 4 minutes long (and did include the sound effects at the start!) compared to over 6 minutes on the album. I think that extended live versions can sometimes become a little self indulgent and overdone but not Pink Floyd, I love every second! Cheers

The high pitched register you're talking about with David Gilmour matching the guitar he does in the song Wish You Were Here as one of the three encore songs. The other one you should have showed her is Comfortably Numb!
I did already react to Comfortably Numb. I think since I have only done 3 Pink Floyd songs before this one I should keep going and then revisit songs for the guests if the viewers want us to

This was primarily about when the group was achieving fame and fortune before they made Dark Side Of The Moon. It was about who was making the money whether it was the band or the record companies.
A good follow up to this that is in the same vein is Have A Cigar from their next album Wish You Were Here which is an excellent album to listen to all the way through without stopping.
I don't know if I've heard Have a Cigar all the way through.
great reaction , the live versions are allways longer then the studio versionand in my opinion much better,
id recomend that you react to COMFORTABLY NUMB from the same live pulse concert, it will blow you away

The time signature is 7/4 for the verse. As I remember they had different versions on the radio, but on FM they played the full song a lot. The short version is missing the middle quiet part of the guitar solo. Live they flesh it out a lot. That is the sax player that actually played on Dark Side of the Moon - Dick Parry.
I can understand why it wasn't on the radio. They didn't like to go over a certain time usually

High hopes is a great song on pulse too, but no real crazy lights etc. Maybe do both with her. 2 ends of the spectrum.

Live versions almost always develop over time, the musicians find slightly better ways and more interesting runs and then it morphs into the same but much better and usually longer.
It works so well here
The 70s were a time of AOR music, Album Oriented Rock. The album were made to listen to all at once. Side A, all the way through, turn it over, and listen to side B.
There were two tracks made, the album track and the radio track, but many radio stations played the full, long version of the song.
Concert versions of song usually had the tempo speed up so they could get more songs in a shorter amount of time.
Nick Mason i(dummer) is the only member to appear on every album.

Listening to the entire album all at once, from start to finish is a big change and you appreciate the songs more. The album takes on a new enjoyment and a deeper meaning to the songs.

First saw em in 73. I was 13. No adult supervision. 3 times after. Yeah... ya don't go to the show for a note perfect reproduction of the album. Not fun for you or the band. Playing the same thing for years. They're artists. They create.
No, yeah. That makes sense. But for the most part they did keep it close enough to the studio version, just with extra showmanship
@@AceofBadeReacts Stretch it out by playing half a beat slower and, in the solo , let Gilmore, or whichever musician, they're all off the charts talented, create. From the Pulse concert, it's really more pronounced in Comfortably Numb. I saw em do it live in Atlanta when the Wall was released ( ironically, I'm friends with the engineer ( Benny ) who I met through another musician friend several years ago here in Tampa ,and I've watched the Pulse version dozens of times. My favorite band growing up.

@@AceofBadeReacts growing up in Atlanta/Tampa I saw pretty much every band you can think of. My first was Zeppelin also 73 , Deep Purple also 73 but, after moving to Atlanta, I gravitated more to Southern Rock.

"Pulse" : 14 days in a row sold out and their last. saw thus 5 tines different places. Dick Parry was a session musician who played on DSOTM and Wish you Were Here. Dick a retire horse shoer was called up by Dave and ask him if he wanted to travel on a world tour. Pink Floyd doesn't play 4 4 beat dance music is why the critics said the won't make it. That's why disco ball on "Comfortably Numb" is an FU to the critics.

Pink Floyd is prog. Throw out time signatures. Like Yes, Rush, Tool and all Prog bands their songs will not fit into your typical radio friendly formats. In the case of this song as with many live songs it was extended and embellished for effect.
Yeah that is very true. Although there are some songs Pink Floyd does that are radio friendly format
Lyrically there's not a lot to it? We must be hearing different songs.
Originally, Pink Floyd were a psychedelic band of very limited ability.
Then David Gilmore replaced Syd as lead guitarist and singer .
Then Roger Waters appointed himself song writer ( lyrics ).
This new Pink Floyd was a force of musical nature.
The new lyrics were deep, meaningful and the quality of Dylan, Leonard Cohen etc , better than any Paul McCartney lyrics, and the music matched the quality of the lyrics......
David is a top notch musician and can play guitar ....electric, accoustic and lap steel.
The rest of the band had to improve and they did.
The lyrics to Money are pure sarcasm , tongue in cheek and brilliant.....but not dance music .
In history, quality musicians rarely do dance music.

Steel guitar, lap steel guitar etc are like Hawian music, also popular in western or some country or cowboy .
Many rock and blues guitarists use a bottleneck of metal tube for a similar sound.....slide guitar.

The Great Gig in The Sky is basically just 3 musical instruments......the vocals, piano and David on the lap steel ( guitar ).
High Hopes live from Pulse is when David's lap steel really blows everyone away.......first he plays a Spanish accoustic then the lap steel.......finishes on the lap steel with Max emotion.

Some are on a stand or platform but many need the player to sit down and rest the instrument on their lap and / or knees.
Little piece of useless information for you, the blonde backing singer Sam brown turned pink floyd down twice before finally agreeing to work with them. There is an interview with her talking about it

@@AceofBadeReacts Sam was an artist in her own right and didn't want to be a backing singer I believe but was told it was a good career move and obviously lucrative as she was paid quite well.
