Advanced lead guitar soloing techniques made easy with guitarist and educator Rob Swift. In this lesson we will explore how basic ideas can be transposed across three different keys, allowing a lead guitarist to perform melodic phrases across a basic 1.4.5 progression in Dmaj. The use of arpeggios to outline the common tones found without the chord is made into a powerful concept, as we add neighboring tones found within the major (ionian) scale. Let's get started!

If I had a teacher like you when I first started playing I would be so much further along than I am. All my first teacher taught me was how to play 'twinkle twinkle little star' and nonsense like that. He was an old dixieland banjo player who thought he could teach guitar and he hated rock-n-roll. No explanation of scales, arpeggios or root notes. It's taken awhile but this stuff is finally starting to make sense thanks to swiftlessons and couple of other patient teachers on TH-cam. You're the first one I've heard who said 'speed comes later', how true. Thank you so much!

Rob, I truly don't know how to thank you! This is another one of those moments when you feel euphoric and it propels you forward to another level! This is music education that sticks with you and you pull from it as you mature as a musician. I'm getting there Rob and it feels so damn good! :)

You have been adopted. I've been looking for an online guitar instructor for some time. You explain things very succinctly. I agree with Todd Russell below, you teach in a personable fashion with no self aggrandizement. I've been playing guitar for 50 years. Self taught. But I've never taken the time to learn arpeggios or scales. Now I am at the point where I have to. I'm developing arthritis in my hands now. Learning these, arpeggios and scales, will help appease movement in my fingers. Thank you for these lessons. I look forward to a long student/instructor relationship.

I've been playing for decades but have yet to see someone so easily describe arpeggios. Thanks for "teaching" and not using the time to show off instead! Beautifully done, Sir. Beautifully done. I'll be watching more.

Great job, bravo! Something "clicked" watching your presentation. I'm a rhythm guitarist, what lead I've done has mostly been a matter of luck. I see now how using the scale, and emphasizing the chord tones from the arpeggio opens up all kinds of melodic possibilities. Thank you.

    Two words: da best.
Between my accumulated foundation and the quality of this instruction, this is the first time I've been able to follow any lesson on incorporating arpeggios and scale tones. Most other tutors just show off what they can do but don't instruct or do a good job of it. You definitely are worth my money I haven't looked yet but I wonder what you've got for lessons

BTW, I don't categorize myself as a "rhythm" or "lead" guitarist, I just play guitar. Whether I play lead or rhythm depends on lots of other things, like if I'm playing by myself or not.
So, when I'm playing by myself I usually play both!

Hey long time fan, just want to let you know that I've purchased a guitar (upgrade from a baritone uke). Still getting used to the sheer heft of the instrument but a lot of the chord shapes easily transitioned over to playing the larger instrument. I'm having fun and will now take your advice to learn scales now that I have more strings to work with. I still really love your videos. Side note, also bought my mom an electric guitar. Now we're learning together and even jam over the phone while I'm finishing college. Thanks for everything!

I got all of it but with medium speed .Got to practice a lot to get the required speed.I'll try to improvise in different scales once I become comfortable with all the things you taught in this video. Hammer on and a pull off at the same time sounds so cool.
I have observed that you were strumming with the pick as well as finger picking at the same time while you played in this video.
I always wanted to learn this and even tried it myself without success but watching you play both with the pick and fingers at the same time in this video helped me getting the knack of it. All thanks to you!! This technique will be very helpful in strumming and picking at the same time.
    Thanks you so much !
