  • FIJI - We honestly had no idea where to go once we booked our flight tickets to the mainland of Fiji. We knew visiting some of the world famous islands was a must-see however.
Our trip was a brief one and so we went to one of the closer islands to the mainland, Beachcomber Island, a part of the Mamanuca Island Group. We had heard good things about the Yasawa Island Group as well but for our purposes it was an unnecessary travel distance.
Beachcomber Island seems to target the younger crowd with dorm-style accommodations offered alongside standard rooms. The peak season for a packed island (~200 guests on a tiny island) seems to be September-December, while we visited in mid-April and had a quiet and relaxing stay.
Staying multiple nights instead of heading to the island for a day trip was essential for us as we experienced both stormy and perfect weather days. The perfect days were a treat when snorkeling and freediving. Note that the island does not have fins available for diving, so bring your own if you are keen.
The coral reefs had both healthy and dead sections depending on what part of the island you were swimming around. The fish life was healthy overall. The island would organise a glass-bottom boat snorkeling tour twice a day to a nearby reef in sight distance from the island, otherwise you could swim, kayak, or organise private trips if you wanted to see more.
Overall it was just want we wanted and hoped for when we booked our Fiji trip.
    Thanks for watching!
