Spearfishing Adventure to Wilson's Promontory - Swimming with Seals
In this video some mates and I went spearfishing at Wilson's Promontory on a calm sunny day in Victoria, Australia, 2.5 hours southeast from Melbourne. We were freedive spearfishing around a group of islands, looking for target species of fish and crayfish. We encountered heaps of life, speared a few fish each to take home and had a great time.
One of the highlights of the dive was swimming with Australian Fur Seals!
Note that while there are no restrictions on how close you can get to seals in Victoria when in the water (although use common sense), there are various restrictions on approaching seals on land, approaching seals when in a vessel, and vessel approach distance to designated seal breeding colonies.
Always educate yourself on local regulations and please dive safely.

Every Spear I Fired at Fish Underwater During 150 Dives in New Zealand #shorts

The context of this video is that I went spearfishing a full 3 days at the Cavalli, Alderman and Mercury Islands in New Zealand, averaging 50 dives per day. As you can see, I only speared less than 10 fish the entire trip, and all except one were landed and boated. Wh...
Nice video, is it dangerous at the shallow inlet entrance, when you go in and out ??
Dude what a COOL experience with all those seals
Well narrated mate! Thanks for creating and sharing! Great Bream!
Hey nick this place looks amazing we are going to be passing through eden on our road trip to melbourne at the end of the year and wondering if you could let us know where you jumped in. Thanks so much Kindly Isaac
Nice vid Nick!
What a great day out diving the prom !
We’ve shot huge khawai/australian salmon out at Portsea. They fun and also tasty smoked.
I feed my dog with Bonita and salmon lol
You've got some lucky dogs then! I rate both the bonita and the salmon; it's how you prepare it.
@@bluenick2704 I eat Bonito my self to but salmon go's to my dog ,I can't eat them I try many times and deferent recipe but don't like them
Yea the bonito are good as sashimi. General question, how's your fish care? Do you brain spike, bleed and gut right away, then once out of the water put them on ice? Also if you have a smoker that's the most popular way to prepare aussie salmon.
Love the respect for the bay and being able to appreciate the boar fish without having to take one. Earned a subscriber!
Thanks mate, and exactly right - we shouldn't always have to take one. Thank you for the support!
Very cool
Thanks!
Hey mate! im just a beginner in spearfishing. I live in victoria any chance i can join you guys give me some tips about spearfishing. Thank you
Hey mate, welcome to the sport! Whereabouts are you located? Have you started to get involved with the local spearfishing community, like the facebook groups and the in-person clubs? Feel free to reach out via DM as well
Hey mate great video! I'm actually looking to dive Eden in a few weeks and wondering if you'd be happy to share which estuary this is that you can spear in? Also get it if you'd prefer not to
Hey mate thank you! I’d be comfortable sharing over DM, just not publicly - feel free to reach out 🙂
Used to snorkel inside the Cerberus back in the 1970’s, before the exclusion zone was mandated. There were big holes in the hull where you could gain entry and swim the length of the hull along corridors. You had to take big breaths as air pockets were very sparse. Back then the central hold was filled with wire, rubbish and a large Conger Eel. Back then you used to be able to climb onto the wooden deck and sun bake as well. I’m 67 now so my diving days are over, but I still recall the good times.
Thanks for sharing your experience! That would be great to be able to do on a calm day, especially since it’s such a shallow wreck. I’ll just have to find other wrecks I guess!
Beautiful looking water. I hope I can dive there one day! Happy Hunting brother! 🤙🏻
Thanks, and happy hunting to you!
Nicely done Mick, really entertaining. Well done on the food prep! Was the leather Jacket good on the tooth? Dive safe, have fun, enjoy life! 👍👌🍻
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah it was good, would recommend. I should have removed the white sinew layer though, that part was too chewy!
This guy has the coolest hobby
😊
Cool video nick! Those boarfish are right on top of my bucket list
Thank you!! They are such a cool fish. The NZ varieties get huge too
That anchor is worth $300 brand new
No wonder the people at the boat ramp we gave it to were so happy 😁. It was perfect though, their anchor was on its last legs.
Hey not to be a Karen by any means putting snapper or pinky guts into water is illegal
Hey mate, I appreciate that you are looking out for fisheries regulations. However, in this instance fisheries literature does not support your claim. Here is what fisheries says about snapper ( vfa.vic.gov.au/recreational-fishing/recreational-fishing-guide/catch-limits-and-closed-seasons/types-of-fish/marine-and-estuarine-scale-fish/snapper ): "These fish can't be filleted in or on Victorian waters. They must be kept whole or in carcass form until you're away from the water. It's okay to fillet your fish on the cleaning tables at the boat ramp. Carcass (scale fish) - The body of a fish that is not cut or mutilated in any manner other than to remove the gut, gills or scales." There is a specific exemption for gutting fish. I've also called fisheries to confirm. Please link me if there exists further guidance about this practice, but otherwise all the other documentation doesn't support your claim.
It is illegal to spearfish in estuary!
Thanks for raising your concern - I’m realising I should have spoken to this in the video. Spearfishing is allowed in certain estuaries in NSW where it is not banned; see this resource: www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0018/602118/Recreational-Spearfishing-Guide-January-2024.pdf You can confirm this with the Fisheries officers in the regional offices if you aren’t sure about a certain location!
looks great, where abouts was the second spot?
Thanks! Feel free to DM me! I generally don’t post exact locations
GC & MP I'll wager
You talk about life under the sea then you harpoon it. The fish are swimming near you, basically trusting you, then you harpoon them. Good on you. You talk of "hunting" scallops. And just go and pick them up. PFFT Maggot. Now you have filmed it and the whole world can see that you are an ignoramus.
I remember that towel 🙌
Haha yes! I still have it
epic content so sick to the southwest of wa. I am a local spearo in that area and have dove that spot in Denmark a few times
Thanks mate! Yeah the diving was good even so close to shore. I was constantly wary of sharks though - how do you go with them there?

Awesome video mate, the vis looks great there!
Thank you mate!! Yeah it was great vis on the flood tide especially
Hah! Yeah, I know exactly where you are, great spots along there. Glad you got onto the bonnies, they were a bit patchy up north. Good snapper a bit further along in the deep. LBG fishing is the go too. I’m introducing the boy to skin diving now, loves it. Great video! Glenn
Haha nice one, yeah if you can tell by the coastline then you already know the spot! Appreciate the advice on the snapper. And that must be so fun teaching your boy! Thanks 😊
I reckon Bream are underrated. Such a great tasting fish!
Agreed!
Very nice video you have shared. Nice to see you enjoying some success, well done. Great cook up of the bream. Dive safe, have fun, enjoy life! 😁❤👊🖐 🤿🐟
Thanks Dstick! That way of cooking a whole fish is my favourite now, so good! Thanks and you too 😀
Many years ago, we snorkelled there a lot, but one day I saw a BR octopus in the shallows, a toddler was playing with it! The mother was totally oblivious and this was before the distractions of mobile phones!!!
That’s so scary! The fact that there is no anti-venom for a blue ring octopus bite is still wild to me 😳
Even in the 60s. Lots of huge crays. Bronze whalersetresfrom the rocks. Tuna schools kilometres long. Black rock dive club person smokied a 15 foot great white. Big days and we had no money. Traded 5lb plus crays in the caravan park for a loaf of bread
Thanks for sharing, that sounds amazing to have witnessed.
4.5 meters GWS wow. We ain't yanks piss off with your feet. But wow that's the bucketlist target species 4.5 meter great white speared in the water killed by hand kudos that's a real spearo or a good liar :D Never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn!
great work, salmon spearing is underrated for how often you can shoot into a big school and either miss the lot or get two in one! That spot is a classic for lost gear as well. Found a knife, masks, snorkel and two weight belts out there
Thank you - agreed! I took some surface shots and rushed shots which didn't help haha.
Really nice flatty 👍
Thank you!!
Love the content mate ! Just liked and subscribed to the channel 😊 have a peak at some of our adventures in nz ❤
Thanks mate!! NZ has such good fishing. Looks like you two have a lot of fun and get loads of snapper!
Imagine living this guys life!

Isn't it?! Sorry for the late reply, just saw this mate
Cracking Video Nick, how good is this sport, getting a group of like minded mates along to have a ripper weekend. Great vibe to the video, good choice of music. Cheers for sharing the fun! Re your flag, Couple of suggestions, I put a light dyneama line on mine and tie it around the float base. Other mates of mine use some blu tack and recon it works. Funniest one I have seen is my mate who uses a fold back clip and periodically replaces them as they rust. Loved the cook up. Dive safe, have fun! 🤿🤗💪🍻🐟
Thank you mate, isn’t it such a top sport? Glad you enjoyed watching the edit. Yes thank you for the suggestions! I’ll try one or two of those - I’ve already lost one flag and am keen to not repeat that!
Such a good vid bro! Gutted I couldn’t be there for the trip! I even looked up flights but it was gonna cost waaaay too much haha
Thanks Sven! That would have been epic, we missed having you there.
Another great adventure, good footage and knife skills!
Thank you 😊
Awesome!
Thanks for co-starring mate!
Nice. Used too jump of the wreck and swim inside.
That sounds like it would have been fun on a calm day
@@bluenick2704 never saw fish like that but. Used to catch good flathead and a few pinky’s if u we’re lucky
Great footage! Whats the silver thing on your left hand?
Thanks! It’s a mirror strapped to the back of my hand - used as a flasher and to check when the GoPro is on/off. It’s so useful
Look at all that Abalone you missed 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
More for you mate! Haha we weren’t targeting abalone and they are so abundant locally, so it’s not usually treated as a specialty here.
@bluenick2704 I know, but they're still tastey AF 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a great experience, thx for sharing it with us.
Cheers!
Nice content. What beach was this?
pretty sure thats all marine park there?
Hey mate, I understand why you’d say that, but there are both protected and open areas for fishing at Wilson’s Prom. The specific area where you cannot fish is called the Wilson’s Promontory Marine National Park, which starts around Tidal River on the west side and Cape Wellington on the east side. If you look up where we launched from (shallow inlet) you’ll see how far from this area we were. I appreciate the comment though and I 100% support fisheries regulations and respect closed areas. A great graphic is available from VFA here vfa.vic.gov.au/recreational-fishing/recreational-fishing-guide/waters-with-fishing-restrictions/marine-waters-closed-to-recreational-fishing/restricted-areas-marine-national-parks
You did a good job with that sling! 👌
Thanks Daniel! It was a challenge having to get closer with the sling but also more rewarding
you'll need to make your way back to WA so we can go do some spearing and send you back with a box like this but better cause its from the west coast haha
Haha I wouldn’t say no to that! Especially north WA
