Hello Joe. I just took a Snorkel Class. Since I wear Rx Lenses, Bought a Sherwood Genesis Mask with the Black Skirt. Bought a Sherwood Snorkel. Type with the Valve on top. Fins? I used the Sherwood Elite FF. Got some good speed. But had trouble with them Treading in the deep end. Dive shop sold me a set of Deep See Aqua Glide. Haven't had a chance to use them yet. Pools (Indoor as well) here in NJ are Closing now. I am Trying to find an Indoor so that I can practice(1 or 2 times per week) over the winter. Having Back Issues(Kyphosis), The Class actually helped me. As my back didn't hurt and was more flexible for a few days after. Broken Collar bone so I can barely Free Style. Asthma might not allow me to try Scuba.
I do the same thing as beginner - intermediate snorkler.. I have black yellow snorkeling mask set and medium length fins and also with green yellow lifevest for relaxing in snorkeling (less stress in keeping floating and easy.. hehe..).. like your video..
The more info out there, the better. Not for nothing, but I'm still using the starter snorkeling kit I bought at Walmart on clearance 6 years ago for about $30. I bought a second set a few years later just to have a backup, but it all has held up fine so far. It can be important to have a wet suit on in certain temperatures of water, but unless you can get a uniformly snug fit that wet suit don't even bother. I was going to be snorkeling in fairly cold water in north Lake Michigan a few Octobers ago and all indications were that you needed a wet suit to stay warm enough for the normal water temps. But I have a 50-in' chest and wetsuits are basically tube shaped. They Don't really tend to taper as much as you may think. Unless I wanted to purchase a wet suit tailored to me, there would have been gallons of water trapped inside of it after a short time. Fortunately, I have very Scandinavian blood in me from fairly recent generations so I was able to snorkel perfectly fine and maintain my body temperature in just a pair of trunks. Others may not be so fortunate so another safety measure is simply to know yourself.
Wow very informative video, thank you! I want to have my own gear for vacations and this answered all of my questions. Also like the fact that you mentioned reef safe sunblock, we all have to be as courteous to the environment we are trying to enjoy!
Hey Joe. Love your channel. Got a few q's. Coming down to the keys for the first time, mainly Largo for a few days with my kids and wife end of July. Avid snorkeler and surfer along the northeast coast of Massachusetts. My idea was a 4hr excursion, getting chartered out to the lighthouse and maybe the bay depending on weather. 1. What is the protocol when encountering predatory sharks? 2. What species tend to be where? 3. when does the weather begin to pick up in the region ( think im booked dead in hurricane season, cause it will be nearing the beginnings of ours, which is you guy's too)?.
Hi I hope you have a great trip! You should be able to find several good charters out to the reefs in John Pennekamp off Key Largo, I am not sure which operator would go all the way out to Carysfort light though. The snorkeling can be AMAZING there if the weather is right. To answer your questions about sharks, you will probably see nurse sharks which are completely harmless and there is a very small chance you may see a reef shark which is mostly harmless as well, I have also seen bonnetheads there which are also totally harmless. It is extremely rare to see larger species like bulls, hammerheads or tigers. Shark bites on divers and snorkelers are also extremely unlikely. Most shark bites happen in murkier water, usually to surfers or waders on the beach where the shark can't exactly see what it is chomping on. But in clearer waters where divers and snorkelers are the sharks can clearly see the humans and they know that is not a part of their diet. Of all the shark species the one that would concern me the most would be a tiger shark, they go up to things out of curiosity and give them a test bite, but again it is extremely rare to see one in Key Largo. Like all shark interactions, just keep calm, be aware of where the shark is and calmly make your way back to the boat. But again in Key Largo I wouldn't be concerned about seeing larger sharks. June to early October would probably be the best weather window. Generally in the summer we have beautiful weather in the morning then large afternoon thunderstorms. We try to do our diving early then dodge thunderstorms on the way back in. Hope this helps, have a great trip and thanks for watching the channel
@@JoeOceanside joey, that was incredibly insightful rundown. I look forward to watching you and your channel and learning as much as i can. Our waters can be violent, and are full of cold water inhabitants, alotta different species of crab's, urchins, starfish, cold water anemones ( probably hacked that), flounders, stripers, blue fish, totaugs. Seasonally, we have the occasional seal, and the very rare, usually juvenile great white shark or whale, but never encountered in Nahant Bay Ma. ( my home break).
Great video. I do have one question. Why not use the full face mask as a beginner. I looking to buy the best choice for me since is not like I go snorkel often but I want to enjoy the experience. So why not the full face mask.?
I have always loved the water, and lived on the Gulf of Mexico. However, as much as I have wanted to learn to snorkel, scuba and paddle board, I have always had to spend the extra money on other things. I wish I owned the gear.
Hi can I ask a question 1.What is full name of the goggles that are you wearing in the video 2 what is the full name of the snorkel that are you wearing during the video I wanna buy it too ❤️
HI Joe, for a beginner snokler, how can you swim while holding on to a go pro in your hand? This would make a great viedo, not sure if you have already covered it?
I am not a swimmer, going snorkeling vacay next month. Kinda afriad to use Snorkeling vest. Is it safe for non-swimmer? should I get a lifevest instead? Thank you :)
What is the best safety vest to get? Which do you recommend that is made of study, reliable materials? Terrified of the ocean, but love the idea of snorkeling.
Hey, can you recommend head protection. As a bald dude i am always looking for ways to cover my head, neck and ears. I would really dig something i could use for SUP and Surf too. **Know any long sleeve rash guard shirts with hoodies?
Right to the point and no ads? Love it!
Your guide is absolutely phenomenal. Clear, concise, and simple.

Their prices have doubled in 3 years.
Which place would you name # 1 in FL for snorkeling and free diving?
Snorkeling would be Blue Heron Bridge for shore snorkels, or Key Largo for boat trip snorkels. Freediving, maybe the springs or Jupiter FL
