Bouldering Outdoors Alone! (Not Really)

  • Hey y’all! On Saturday, I was supposed to go rope climbing with two friends. An hour past our meeting time, I left them a note at our meet-up spot and ventured into the bouldering area, where I had seen two groups go while I was waiting!
    Thus, I reiterate: Not climbing solo, just hiking in/driving in solo, to meet up with random strangers who weren’t expecting me :~)
    I’d also like to thank tentree for their generosity in supplyin’ some sending fits and my new favorite backpack!! I mentioned in the video that parts of it are made with “algae blooms” (lol) but to see a video of all the thought that went into making that backpack, check it out here (they do really use pond algae to make parts of the backpack!) • Mobius Design

    I watch a lot of climbing vlogs (probably should replace some of them with actual climbing) but yours is among my favorites because (and please don’t be offended) I feel like I can achieve the things you do whereas I doubt I’ll ever climb like Magnus Mitbo or Anna Davey. Their vlogs are wonderful and informative and they seem like great people but their climbing is incredibly far beyond what I’m currently capable of. And maybe beyond what I’ll ever be capable of! Plus, the way you edit, comment in screen, etc. makes you very approachable. Plus, I’m also in SoCal so I know some of the places you go (including this one).

    • @JenniferLangen
      @JenniferLangen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ahhh thanks so much!! and not offended at all :D i love magnus and anna both but i'm definitely not at that level yet, and i'm so happy to hear that people like watching someone more relatable! thanks so much for the words of encouragement :~) if you're in socal then hopefully i'll see you around!

      Ariolimax C. True of course, and I watch Magnus (and Anna for the matter of that) both to try to learn some small thing and to be amazed at his skill. And that’s not to diminish learning from Jenn as well, but from her I feel like I can get there too.

    Man, I need to start filming myself climbing just to analyze all the things I'm doing wrong, it's so hard to know when you're climbing but so obvious when you look at it from the ground (Like how you point out a lot of "Oh why did I cut feet, why did I heel early..." in this video, I'm sure I'd have ten times more things to correct 😁)

    • @JenniferLangen
      @JenniferLangen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes!! i highly recommend people to film themselves climbing, even if they don't want to start youtube channels of their own :-) it's a great way to analyze your technique but ALSO really satisfying to document your progress as you improve over time!

    Nice progress on the B1 Traverse. Next go for sure. Hope you are not offended by some advice (I'm not one of those dudes that sprays beta at girls on the wall at the gym), but I noticed your leg is straight/not engaged when you get those heel hooks. Maybe try to engage your heel when you heel hook (i.e. pull up on your heel), which can save some precious energy on your arms when you make hand movements to avoid getting pumped. If you engage your heel, your body can be above the next hand hold so you're not always throwing up to the next hold, but using your heel to keep you closer to the wall and to the next hold. But yeah, a lot of that comes from trusting your feet/heel on rock, which just comes from more outdoor experience.

    • @JenniferLangen
      @JenniferLangen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oooh that's solid and welcome advice! i noticed that my forearms were feeling the burn close to the end, and learning how to engage my heel is gonna come in handy for future climbs. thanks so much for the detailed and thoughtful advice!

    While going outdoor bouldering with friends is a ton of fun, I actually quite enjoy going just by myself. Especially when I am throwing myself at a project over and over and over again. I have sent most of my hardest outdoor climbs by myself actually and I have no regrets. I can say the biggest hurdle is probably carrying out enough pads to make it safe. Price to pay though. Always worth the extra effort. Cheers.

      hey!! so... they don't fit my foot as well as the la sportiva solutions because the arch of my foot is somewhat high. for volumes they've been okay so far, but i feel like they're a little on the stiffer side. a lot of my friends prefer to have a more flexible shoe for volumes so that they can smear really well. i'd check out adam ondra's video called "the alchemy of climbing shoes" as well, he kinda talks about the shoes he uses for volumes!

      @@guillaumechampagne6659 I know.
      Still, the question is valid. For example I think if she were in the UK, she would have to say that this video is sponsored. (not sure what the current recommendations of their TV authority are)
      A similar interesting discussion was done around reviews a few years ago, where outlets started to disclose when they got a copy of the game/hardware.
      Also she did disclose that she got it for free, so my whole question isnt about right or wrong, but rather about the degree of where people think that one should stride in the gray area of sponsorship.

    • @JenniferLangen
      @JenniferLangen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i'm honestly not really sure how to disclose it, tbh :~/ i really do appreciate you keeping it all in check though. i've had email contact with like ~3 brands so far and am super new to all of this - there are some companies that have terms that explicitly state "don't state that we're sponsoring you unless it's a paid promotion!!" as in they pay me $ on TOP of free gear. i wasn't really sure what to do in this instance :// i def wanna stay as transparent as possible tho!! so keep asking those questions because i genuinely wanna talk about those things

    • @guillaumechampagne6659
      @guillaumechampagne6659 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JenniferLangen I think the way you handle it in this video is perfect and very transparent. As your channel grows and you start having "influence" (hate that term), I think it's normal that brands will want to affiliate with you, it's awesome.
      Just disclose it, but as long as you don't get paid to make a specific review or whatever, I'd say you're supported by X brand and not sponsored?
      IDK, I'd say sponsored involves money, where supported means free gear and stuff, but that might be a distinction only in my head lol..

      OMG HAHAHA i wish i had a better answer, he just straight up didn't feel like climbing that day and wanted to play music instead :D but to be fair, he thought i was going with two of my other friends who he didn't know that well, which is probably also why he stayed home that day :)

    Hey Jenn, I love your channel. Long time viewer, recent subscriber. (Dick move i know).you mentioned you want to travel and see the world. I live in Sydney and us folk in upside down world love to boulder. I've been bouldering since August and sent my first 2 v6's last weekend and would love for you to join me and the crew in a session or 12 (if you come for 2 weeks) we train hard and eat/drink harder. I know this is a long shot and a little cringe but if you want to get in contact my Instagram is at @pinksstagram. Me and the crew at nomad would love to have you down to send, much love and happy sends George

      i'm trying them out right now! i will say that the solutions might fit my feet a little better. there's a little bit of space in the arch of my foot, but the next size down is a little too painful for my liking. oh well, i really like the shoe other than that!
