You don't need to put autumn feed & moss killer after using the methods shown in the video. If you do use the mix its counter- productive as you're left with the same results the following year. Scarification removes the moss and dead or pressed in longer bits of grass. Aeration allows water to get through. The moss killer is temporary and doesn't fix the issue but the people in the shop will tell you its great so you keep coming back wasting money on there products
And if you have a bigger lawn and feel its too much work, just buy a leaf rake, one shown in the video while manually scarifying and a pitchfork. Then just do a little bit here and there, you don't have to kill yourself and you'll gradually have the same results over time.
The question was, will applying autumn fertilizer be detrimental to new grass? That is my question too. I want to apply phosphorus to encourage root growth. Will applying autumn fertilizer cause new grass to die?
I don't understand why people say aeration encourages root growth. Air kills roots. They even have special pots with holes on the sides for 'air pruning' roots.
When roots do not get oxygen the root cells will be unable to produce ATP from respiration and will eventually die. Roots use oxygen to absorb and make use of nutrients in the soil. Roots need a source of oxygen in the soil in order to grow. When a root is exposed to air without the protection soil (or other means to keep the root from drying out completely), the roots will eventually die. Also, a root will die if it is growing in waterlogged soil conditions. Dry air is the mechanism of action in air pruning.
I think if you want to remove bumps and hollows with top dressing you need to cut low first. Otherwise I’d leave it a bit longer, especially towards the end of the growing season.
Depends on the season and the weather. As we come into autumn, you can cut lower as the temperatures come down into the teens - most evaporation comes from the soil, not the grass leaves. Also makes it easier to clear leaves with shorter grass
If it’s long enough that you would normally cut the grass or longer, yes. It allows you to see the conditions of the grass better. Also produces less ‘fluff’ when you scarify.
A proper gardener excellent
wow. what a brilliant teacher. thankyou!
Thank you. Really helpful..
Brilliant, thank you 👍
Very informative! Thanks!
Really good explanation ! Thank you !
Really great advice.
Does it matter as to what blade you use on your scarification as to the time of year if that makes
Any tips for turning a couch grass filled small field into a 'fairway' ?
I don't know where to start . . I guess you'll tell me to plough it. : )
I’ve 2/3rd of an acre. Think I need to go the mechanical route.
What type of sand do you use please?
Excellent video, thank you.
Can you add autumn feed & moss killer after over seeding, will this compromise the new seed?

I understand, make perfect sense. Thanks for the reply.

@@janicewilson9827 he does say can he apply Autumn feed + MOSS KILLER, which to me sounded like he was trying get an easy way out of it.

Does anyone know of you should cut the grass really low or do you keep it at a medium height?

should you mow the lawn before you start scarifying etc?
No

Aeration in clay soil is awful with fork
How do you keep the bloody birds from eating your over seedings?
Cover with a thin layer of compost. This will also help keep the seeds moist if under watered.
So helpful thanks for sharing!
