      Good morning. Quick question. I need to raise/level parts of my garden, prob about 4 x 3 metres. About 30-50mm raise required.
      Am I better with soil/sand and grass seed, or, new tuft? Regards Martin

    1. mow lawn to lowest setting of your mower. 2. remove autumn leaves, and scarify to get rid of thatch. 3. tidy up and sharpen the edges. 4.aerate. 5. collect the lawn plugs with mower or rake or broom (let them dry for a couple of hours). 6. spread top dressing to level areas. 7. Overseed. 8. water 2-3x a day to encourage germination of seeds.

      Football could be done in 3 mins, 1) kick a ball 2) score a goal, 3) win the game. But I still watch the 90. People learn in different ways and I try to make a balance, hope it was useful in some way.

    I used the same compost spreader for the first time a few days ago! my top soil was very moist and there were so many clumps (soil). it was heavy for me to roll the spreader :-S but I really like this tool. Thank you for the video! Glad to see the whole process!!

  • @dooovde

    A good tip for the edging is to cut out the sod and flip it around. You can then seed over the bit that was on the edge after packing it with topsoil. The cut edge with roots is far more stable than newly planted grass seed and has better chance of staying in place.

    Thanks for teaching, there are still so many things to learn for me! As an german engineer but lazy man and lover of a good lawn i have concentrated on good robotic lawn mowering and automatically watering in my garden, this helps a lot. But some of your actions are confronting with cables and pipelines in the ground. Before corona crisis i had some woman in my garden telling their husbands ''see, this is a good lawn has to look like'' but I'm a child whithout experience against your practice!! Sorry for bad english but best wishes and thanks even there is a brexit. Have a nice day.

    Another informative video, cheers.
    I started my renovation back while we were in lockdown as a last resort before ripping it up and replacing it with something which was less offensive on the eye.
    I have followed your tips and advice, but just using the most basic of equipment ie garden fork, spring Tyne rake, and muscle power.
    I have become a bit obsessed with it to be honest, and, at times, have wondered whether I have been wasting my time, but, finally, I mowed it yesterday, and I now have beautiful stripes for the first time.
    I can’t tell you how chuffed I am.
    There is still lots of room to get it better, but I am now at a point where I feel all the work is paying off.
    Thanks for your steer on feeds etc, some of which I have used to great effect.

    That aerator looks good. I have a hollow tine with the 4 tubes but it works awful on my clay soil with the plugs constantly getting stuck, so I have resorted to using a garden fork. Something like yours looks ideal though as there is a recess for the plug to fall out, or at worst be picked out

    I'm watching from Toronto, Canada. I'm a lawn nut, so I like to see what people are doing in other areas where cool season grasses are used (can always learn something). Compared to most lawns here, I keep mine very short (I increase from 3/4" to about 1" or 1.25" when the our summer heat comes around, generally mid-June through August) but I need to use different "dwarf" grasses to accomplish this. I use a blend of a dwarf perennial eye and a dwarf Kentucky bluegrass. I noticed the seed blend you're using seems to include a lot of fescues. Do you use a bluegrass variety at all? What height do you maintain your lawn? I'm looking forward to seeing how your renovation turns out... your timing and process is right on with my area, so your information is great for this part of Canada. I usually add a starter fertiliser once I see the perennial rye showing through; the Kentucky Blue variety takes about 2 to 3 weeks even in the best conditions. Am I correct that you use something similar? Thanks for the video... I have subscribed...

    • @GardenLawncareGuy
      @GardenLawncareGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adrian welcome from the UK, on my front lawn rennovarion I used a rye only mix which turned out brilliant. My lawn as-is has blend of rye and fescue, we don't tend to use kentucky blue very much over here - most of the mixes are rye and fescue. This year I've had best results from 25mm to 32mm so similar to what you say, and yes I will add the fert later on after the first cut probably so the existing grass doesn't outcompete the seed and the new seed will be ready to take it

    • @adrianwalton6715
      @adrianwalton6715 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GardenLawncareGuy Interesting... I really like the rye blends too... beautiful texture and colour and I think they tend to grow more upright, even the short variety. And I forgot I can speak "metric" with you. Do to geography, I tend to see more videos from US people. Along with their rather weak command of the English language, they generally have next to no knowledge of the metric system. Thanks for your reply... continued success with your channel and I hope you gain more viewers from Canada.

    • @GardenLawncareGuy
      @GardenLawncareGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't use iron with new seeds it can dehydrate them. As I used a topsoil I didnt apply fert but I will use a pre seed at the first cut. I dont want to use a pre seed now as the existing grass will outcompete the seed. You can use fert here and seaweed but do not apply an all in one type of product with weed killer and iron as it will be too harsh. You can also wait until first cut

    Great video mate well done. I'm having a nightmare with my new lawn, one side hasn't taken as well as the other, and just looks like a mushy half dead mess now. Interestingly, its the one side of my garden that had what seemed like really fertile jet black soil, but I'm now thinking it may have been too organic as it seemed to have no sandy quality whatsoever. I'm thinking its retaining too much water maybe on this side? Any advice would be appreciated 🙏
