You can seed in the summer if you keep watering. I wasn’t about to let my lawn at the house I just bought look totally dry and dead all summer. It’s true it won’t work as well and will cost some money on the watering, but you can get some growth going in the summer.

If you do cover with Pete moss or soil it will aid moisture retention and can prevent bird take but be careful with the soil choice as alot of them contain weeds

@@GardenLawncareGuy You're only going to get ryegrass going in that. Trouble is, other grass will germinate but soon die off. Be very wary of changing pH. It must be done gradually with regular testing. It's not easy, even though some of us do it unintentionally with iron sulphate when we moss kill, although that tends to be temporary unless it forms an ionic bond with calcium in the soil which can cause drainage problems, often called an 'iron pan' in greens where it's been done for years. The trouble is, pH is not linear. i.e. a pH of 6 is 10X more acid than 7. a pH of 5 is 100X more acid. 4 is 1000X etc. Can I suggest you sign up for a course? You can do a Sports turf HNC in 2 years part time, 1 day a week college, 15-20 hours a week of homework if you're prepared to put the effort in or an HND in 3 years. This is assuming you have a basic NVQ2 or similar to start with, otherwise add another 2 years on but the NVQ is easy.
@@mindgame01 True but if you look around in nature, it will always revert to what is natural. Plant an acid lawn with rye and I bet the Festuca and possibly even Agrostis species will creep in after a while. A lolium/Fescue lawn can be hard work as it typically requires far more scarifying. I think it's better to start with what you have instead of fighting nature.

If you tread over the seed isn’t there a danger of compaction? I tried to start a new lawn in mid March. I tilled, raked and put fertiliser in the soil before sowing and treading the seed in, but I must’ve done something wrong because now the soil is like cement. I’m gonna give it another shot this Easter but don’t wanna make the same mistakes.
No more than walking on the lawn and creating seed to soil contact will improve germination. Compaction is generally caused over time by traffic and a key step

@@GardenLawncareGuy thank you have been trying that works well.
Very helpful
Great video now I am planning to seed around March do I fertilise 1st a few days before seeding or do it at the same time using pre seeding fertiliser?
Thanks mhla, are you overseeding or sowing a new lawn?
@@GardenLawncareGuy Sawing a new lawn.
Put it down before normally, check the label some say up to 1week before some abit sooner 👍
@@GardenLawncareGuy Thanks , any recommendations?
@@GardenLawncareGuy My garden size is same as yours I am looking to buy top soil how many of those big bags do you think I would need?
Really appreciate your reply. May I ask what did you use in your video? The lawn is level just a few dips that you wouldn’t notice till you walked over it and also we had very bad investigation of leather jackets that left the lawn very lumpy and I want to re- level it. It’s a small garden so would you still recommend soil over sand. Many thanks.
Hi, I used this gardenlawncareguy.com/product/70-30-top-dressing-bulk-bag-1000kg/
@@GardenLawncareGuy absolutely fantastic……just about to place an order and just thought can I do it now or do I have to wait till about September when it’s wetter. How do I find your shop.
Hi you can do it now spring and autumn are best times as you can combine with overseeding. The link is above to the shop 👍
I have subscribe thank you for this , I live in london, Ontario Canada .
Soil pH should be your first consideration. Try sowing a ryegrass in 5.5 or a fescue in 7.5 and see what happens.
That is interesting for sure Andy 👍 My ph is high close to 8. Looking to bring it down this spring
Nothing wrong with lolium perenne at 5.5-7.5 I'd love to see some studies that show otherwise.
Enjoyed the video just can’t wait to reseed
My lawn. But with this weather is going to be sometime yet.
Cheers Steve
Just over seeded my lawn, not fed it since last summer, when I shall I feed it and best fertilise please? Heard a heavy N feed will promote the lawn to grow n not giving the new grass a chance, pls advise.
A product this like with high P used with seeding gardenlawncareguy.com/product/6-9-6-nutrigrow-pre-seeder-fertiliser/
A great video thanks Matt,
short but very informative keep up the good work Sir.
Thanks Simon 👍
@@GardenLawncareGuy oh and I purchased a Landzie top dresser and had a Nice 10% discount from your channel.
I’m really looking forward to doing the spring renovation thanks again Matt.
You will get some joy using that, does make the work alot easier and quicker. Using it with bags is an option to as very easy to tip bags into it
@@GardenLawncareGuy brilliant thank you...👍
all the seeds you recommended are not available. any suggestion about a good lawnmower?
I am just adjusting my amazon store, they are available direct here too gardenlawncareguy.com/shop/product-category/grass-seed/
Excellent video thank you.
Thanks 💚
Well explained thanks
Thanks mate
Very very good video!!!
Thanks 👍
Great explanation
Thanks!
I tilled my entire backyard and put the seeds down and after layed a small amount of leaf mulch on top. It seems to be impossible for me to achieve grass
Cheers Matt, very helpful 👍🏼👍🏼🍻
Thanks for this.
👍
Hi, can I cover my lawn in top soil and start over again ? thanks
Yes but depending how deep you make it the old stuff may come through especially weed grasses
@@GardenLawncareGuy thanks
If seeding at, say 35g/m2, would I set my spreader up at half of this, to spread in both directions?
Yes spreading in both directions is another great tip to get max coverage and overlap!
Adding a layer of soil on top but not to bury the seed lower than a quarter inch. I'm going to drink some liquor now and come back to lay some artificial grass
tweels are for the twoke
great video. thanks
Thanks bud
I forgot to ask can you rent the topsoil spreaders. I mean the cage thing
No they are pretty new to the UK so the rental shops won't have hands on just yet. I'm shortly feature a leveling lute though that will do a great job a fixing levels and spreading soil
Will you be selling on your web site ?
Hi Steve there is a link on my site where you can get 10% discount off one if the cost is used a checkout gardenlawncareguy.com/product/landzie-compost-spreader/?ref=GLG

How do I find your shop?
Can see the all American on your garden table.
Think I'm using it this year!
@@GardenLawncareGuy That's great we can compare notes. Thanks for letting me know.
So helpful, thank you!
I've just started digging all my grass up (weeds) manually I'm starting to regret it I'm half way of digging up ,a pile of mud and weeds ,now do I carry on back hurting, I suffer with sciatica not the best thing to have when digging I do about half hour of digging then stop once I do get all the weeds dug up then what
Literally just finished doing the exact same thing, I had my second sciatica operation 6 weeks ago, I'm just happy I was physically able to it
Hello,
May I ask what you think of peat moss as a top soil
I've not used it before, alot of people do, might try it out although there are some concerns about its environmental impact
@@GardenLawncareGuy
Yes that's what I've heard as well. Thanks for your feedback.
Cheers
What setting did you use on your scott's spreader to get 35g/sq mtr?
Around 28 I think it was
Nice sharing
Thanks wilson
Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it joseph
Excellent advice...
Thanks for following Chris 👍
did he say sowing or snowing?
Sowing
I want to mix shady grass seed with normal is this okay? Its half shady half not.
Yes you can mix grass or try this one which works in both conditions gardenlawncareguy.com/shop/grass-seed/shade-lawn-grass-seed/
Basically the biggest mistakes would be... not doing the fundamental things you are supposed to be doing?
Exactly get the basics right
Yes, that's why he shared the basics.
New problem.I laid the topsoil down exactly evenly. The night after I laid the seed it rained heavily, the soil has sunk and it not even, lots of bumps and holes. It's so depressing, I put so much of my time and effort into it, it looks shit.
How is it looking now? Once you have grass you can keep levelling out over.time.
@@normalguy7898 The grass is very patchy. I've put seed down 3 times but the rains washes it away each time. I've cut it twice. Next spring I'm thinking of laying compost on top with seed mixed in and then rolling it. Hopefully that will work.
8:44 Nice shoes
Oops should have watched this video before. Ticked two boxes
👍
Should I scarify now in February?
I wouldn't recommend as soil temps are too low
Agree too cold for the lawn to repair
Thank you it make sense,
This guy has fifteen feet of yard! I have 15,000 sq. Feet yard. Mow low, Kill, de thatche, aeration, seed x 2 and water-fertilize for 18 days no mowing. This shit ain’t the space shuttle, it’s grass. Lol
Amazing!
Bought good grow grass seed what a waist of money, benn waiting 2 weeks and not a blade of grass followed all instructions no sign of growth i feel a fool for believing their adverts know better now ,don't i trust any big claims by these big new company's save my money now
i guess the bags of seed on the table are just for decoration ....
I guess your comment on the video was just to decorate the comment section

you've just contradicted yourself , don't bury the seed and then you say put a layer of soil over it to lock in the moisture , so which is it ?????
Not a contradiction do both, cover the seeds with a thin layer will help, but don't bury them too deep as it will hinder.
mistake 1: growing grass on your entire yard instead of growing some food there
Caring is the worst thing you can do. Just throw that shit out there and don't care. Then it'll explode into a jungle of healthy lawn. If you care it'll die to spite you.
