Lithium vs AGM deep cycle batteries can turn into a very heated debate over which is the better product. But the answer can be different for everyone, depending on your set-up and how you intend on using your battery.
In this video, Craig talks to Adam, the Chief Engineer at KickAss Products, about the differences between the two battery types including cost, performance, battery management technology and some other parameters to consider before making your selection.
Nice work guys! It's good to see some decent no BS videos like this coming out when so many places peddle trash.
Glad you liked it. More to come!
Lol! This is so full of bullshit it's not funny. 2:38 "you can't take an agm to 80% depth of discharge". That is complete bullshit.
Thanks to Craig & Adam our tech expert Adam@Kickass ,bring on some more tech stuff. 👍
Thanks you.
Awesome video guys very well presented with information that anyone could understand
Keep these clips coming reminds me of the old days when Clayton used to put up clips like this. Cheers 🇦🇺👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for the great info. It definitely helps in my decision making of which battery I will buy, and it will definitely be a KICKASS battery.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks. You answered a lot of questions I had. I will be ordering soon.
Fantastic. Glad it helped.
I've just had so much trouble with kings products failing on me, coming broken or not even showing up. Really regretting not spending the extra and supporting you guys after finding how customer orientated you guys are... will be upgrading through u guys basically within weeks of buying a full kings dual battery kit. Also will be buying your inveter over kings.. I want something that will work for the money.
Swag eyelets fell out on first set up
Air compressor gauge face is warped
And now worse off, my battery has been lost in transit.
Thanks Jared,we would really appreciate you as a customer & our gear rocks
Thanks for watching
Cheers Craig
Info shared in the vid on the technical side explanation is good info. Definitely good to see, and would help with some decisions.
Charging in the shed, with someone's bedroom above the shed, is something that could pose some more questions.
As stated in the video, FiFePO4 is the safest lithium chemistry available. If you are concerned about charging risks the only advice that I can offer is do not leave a battery charging un-supervised.
nice job guys well presented easy to follow :)
Thanks, glad you liked it.
I learned a couple of things here today. One, there is a Carlton supporter, well done. And Twi, someone plays the guitar and uses Marsnell Amps….
G'day mate you got me,all three are correct well noticed - go the blues & there's nothing like a guitar plugged into a marshall amp mate
thanks for watching

Thanks for sharing good information with people. 😊 Might be worth mentioning the BMS balances the cells & it’s a critical function, if you don’t fully charge LiFe4 batteries regularly the BMS isn’t balancing cells, do this to long and battery will fail early.
Thanks for sharing!
Great vid. Awesome advice 👌🇦🇺🍺
Thanks 👍 We do plan to do more educational video this year.
Hey guys, great video. Just wondering if the smart shunt and display works with a lithium battery?
Not correctly. As stated in the video LiFePO4 has a relatively flat discharge curve. the way an AGM shunt works is from an estimate based on the liner discharge curve of an AGM battery therefore the shunt will not display correctly.
Will my standard 1998 land cruiser alternator charge one of these batteries or do I have to do some kind of modifications?
G'day David, grab a wiring kit & DCDC charge & bobs your uncle, here is a link for you to look at

Its not kick arse, It is spelt kick ass, which is quite bizarre as to why anyone would want to kick a donkey. The information was excellent though. Well done guys.
G'day Brendan,I would not like to kick a Donkey as they do kick back, mother in law could be different lol ,thanks for watching the video

I have evaluated this whole deep cycle battery issue for many years. There are all kinds of claims about life cycles, but reality is usually different. I can get 2 12-volt lead acid deep cycle batteries to run my 24-volt trolling motor for $93 each and they generally last me 5 years or more. If one dies, I have a 5-minute drive to buy one and replace it, no lost fishing time. AGM batteries cost a lot more and if I have one that dies, I may be unable to fish for days until I have one shipped to me or I may have a missed day because I spent the day driving a long distance to buy one. Lithium-Ion batteries I would have to order online and wait days or weeks to have one shipped to me. Since my lead acid deep cycle battery at $93 dollars lasts me 5 years how can the current pricing of a Lithium-Ion battery ever make sense? Don't misunderstand me, I would rather use lighter Lithium Batteries, but the outrages pricing just doesn't make financial sense and is not worth the reduced weight and the lifespan issue does not make financial sense either. How many $93 batteries could I go through every 5 years to ever cost me anything near what a lithium-ion battery costs? Lithium-ion battery costs $650 divided by $93 approximates 7, times 5 years approximates 35 years. So, I would have to be able to use the lithium-ion battery 35 years without needing to replace it to justify its extra cost.
G'day Kevin,Agm battery's are an oldy but a goody & still have there place, thanks for watching the appreciate it
Cheers Craig
I'm guessing that bms won't hold up to multiple current draws like 280 amps for that 320ms rate. At such a short time why even rate it at less than a second when most competitors have ratings of anywhere from 5 to 15 second ratings. I'm guessing that screw driver stunt pulled more than 280 amps.
Our 200Ah is rated for 440 Amps for 320mS and the 120Ah 280 Amps 320mS. This is to allow for a current inrush in an inverter. Can you please advise which manufacturers have a peak for 5 - 15 seconds?
Can i use this agm battery for car music system with 320 alternator
Especially if you play bon jovi & 80's har metal lol
Thanks for watching
Cheers Craig
Does the lithium have built in low voltage protection via the bms?
Yes it would. Its normally around 10.5v which is stupid as thats beyond flat.
Our batteries definitely do, You will get a low voltage warning at 10% SOC and then the battery will go into protection mode if you continue to discharge after this point.
Fair dinkum mate!
Thanks, I guess.
Can you link 2 or 3 in parallel?
At this stage the firmware in out BMS is not designed to connect multiple batteries together.
Can you series connect 4 of your lithium batteries?
At this stage the firmware in out BMS is not designed to connect multiple batteries together.
Does your batteries have an IEC 62133/UL 1642 certification, a lithium battery should have this level of certification or it’s not on my shopping list. 🍻
What's the lithium type battery they run in the EV's, teslas, ev scooters etc? They seem to turn into fires from hell, thermal runnaways, some times in use, and sometimes just when charging, the ev scooters nearly taking out houses. Bit of a worry with charging the car o'night in the shed if it gets "lit" whilst everyon is sleeping.
ARe these portable type/style batteries, could they be said to be "different", different materials and things of that nature, that doesn't have the same problems as the ones in the ev teslas, ev scooters etc that get lit, like a day out in the crematorium?
Perhaps watch the video again, they do mention the chemistries.
Li-Ion and Li-Polymer are the ones with volatile chemical mixes that can go boom. LiFePO4 are very safe, and in reality they are normally safer than the battery under the bonnet of your car.
If you're really concerned about lithium, then you should dispose of (safely of course) your phone, laptop, iPad and any other modern rechargeable device in your home.
Don't peddle panic!
PS. Tesla uses Li-Ion for their vehicles, but they are changing the non-performance versions over to LiFePO4.
@@PowerPaulAu Don't run any rechargeable product, all corded power tools, corded shaver, corded appliances, PC's etc, except the lead acid ones, due to the info that has come through recently on the slave labour, child labour being used with the cobalt mining in the congo. Gone back to lead acid.
I'm bringing attention to the dark side of the lithium and lithium batteries.
The average age of death of a lithium miner is 35 years of age.
I'm bringing to attention the dark side of lithium also. That we need to bear the brunt of if we choose to support the lithium products, that they come through with with a dark side with the mining, deaths, and if referring to the cobalt re: the car ev's, the slave mining in the congo for the cobalt.
It's not always about practicality, it's about morals, what is right and wrong.
@@shutthegate8232 there's no cobalt in LiFePO4... Please do your research properly and don't accept what you see online as gospel. Your information is misplaced.
Cobalt goes into Li-Ion style cells, not these ones.
G'day Shut the Gate,it all comes down to the manufacture etc.a lot of cheap imports don't do the real testing & compliance,as we do,all or lithium are totally safe n sound due to all the time & money spent on r&d & compliance get what you pay for & those people buying $150 scooters instead of a top brand name tried & tested & it's usually why they are a couple of grand
once again you get what you pay for
Thanks for watching the video we really appreciate it
Cheers Craig
Agm or lead battery is very miss leading with the capacity as well. The voltage drop of lead makes them useless very quickly.
Agm is an oldy but a goody still for certain people, just half your agm batterys capacity to get an idea of you usable a/h eg:120 a/h has 60 a/h of use
Will zero-degree temperature damage a Lithium Battery?
No it will be ok,but nice if you got it a warm jacket lol

Who's in charge of your graph making???
That first DoD graph is all sorts of f#@ked up😂
Helpful vid tho 👍
G'day ozzy,not me i failed maths,lol
Thanks for watching

Nice! I’ve found discount brad Pitt! No shade brothers informative video
Thanks Chef lol
Cheers
Craig
Why would you name your company Kick-ass? And what do they do? Re-package the Li-ion cells and add a BMS?
G'day Rodge, that's Klaetons philosophy to kickass & we reckon our products do just that,
Thanks for watching the video we appreciate it
Cheers Craig
Wish you guys shipped to new zealand!
G'day Roy,do you know any one in Auz that can send it off to you?
Cheers Craig
Blonde guy is what people in my circle might call a mirror quèèr.
That doesn't mean he's a bad guy, it's just he thinks he's particularly beautiful, and he thinks everyone else is stunned by his beauty. Also, he would get-it-on with his doppelganger if he were to meet him.
Im really not sure how to respond,to your comment Cornpop,i could not even find mirror queer on google,Definatly don't think im beutiful, but don't take myself to serously either so ill take it as a compliment
thanks for watching

@AustralianDirect12volt
Admittedly, I was just being a hateful a$$. You kind of reminded me of a guy who I used to know and I took a swing. You handled it with dignity and class, and I now retract my silly remarks. You have my ultimate respect!
No problem thanks for the kind comments
Cheers Craig
Adam looks far too cute to be an engineer.
He is a very hansome man, especialy in the flesh lol
