Yeah, I’m avoiding Mercari for big purchase items now. I was shocked to be charged nearly $20 on a processing fee, plus a service fee, then add Tax, plus shipping fees. All for an item I bought for under $100. First of all…it’s the sellers that are trying to make the money and using a platform to attract buyers. Well…nothing attractive about a 25% hidden Mark-up you were not expecting. For what? So sellers don’t have to pay fees for a platform They need? Unless it’s a GREAT deal, in brand new condition, with free shipping, I’ll steer clear of Mercari for sure. What genius decided that this was a great idea?

I am strictly a buyer on Mercari, but I will no longer be buying anything from Mercari. I just cancelled a purchase because my $10 item had $2.57 in fees added to my invoice. This is the breakdown: $10 for item, $6.99 shipping, $1.50 Service Fee, $1.07 Processing Fee and $1.27 Sales Tax = $20.83. Mercari just killed their golden goose. No other platforms have fees, so why should we buy from Mercari? And if the other platforms try it, there is always Facebook Market place, Offer-Up, etc. where we could pick up items in person, and not pay shipping or sales tax, and no fees. With higher shipping costs, on-line platforms are on treading on shaky ground, so this Mercari move is really stupid. It made a lot of money last year, so this is just corporate greed.

This is a fantastic break-down. I don't sell on Mercari, but I DO buy relatively often, and this change to buyer fees has made me completely peace-out of this website/app. A seller offered me $70 on a fragrance, and with the item + taxes + shipping + buyer fee + processing fee, my total on a $70 item suddenly came to NINTETY SIX and change!! I plan to stay on Mercari. The thing is, sellers can lower their prices over there now so a lot of the cost to buyers will probably remain the same in the end. I know I’m lowering my prices by about 20% from what I have them listed for on Poshmark.

I don’t mind the $2 fee but that isn’t the only issue with their changes. The fees are utterly destructive for higher $ items and this hurts the buyer & seller. I also don’t recommend any seller leaving their money on the platform once the balance gets over more than an amount you’re comfortable losing, simply because of some of the random things I’ve seen them do. I’ve been selling on the platform a couple years and my net for 2023 was just under $8k. My sales have stayed steady through the transition and I’m going to keep selling. However, I don’t think Mercari made a smart move. I do suggest you check out the fees charged to buyers though. If you compare like items-same price & same shipping-the fees charged are different. Are they using some sort of dynamic fee schedule? I’m trying to figure it out 🤷‍♀️

Has anyone had a bunch of returns opened on mercari since the changes? I had over 600 sales on mercari with only one return approved and since the changes, I've made 6 sales and 2 already have returns opened. One for fit, and the other one where the buyer said I sent her the wrong item but the item she showed is a pair of pants I've never seen in my life and a brand I never sell. So I guess I'm about to get scammed. As soon as that return gets processed I'm probably going to shut down my store. If the platform is going to have this many returns and scams going forward then it's not worth my time. Even if mercari protects me in this case I'm probably still going to shut it down since they've clearly just invited all the scammers by putting this announcement out. That is truly annoying, but I would expect that that would be the case. EBay has the same situation except they force the seller to make the buyer whole if there is an issue with the item. As far as scammers, in the last 2 years that I've been selling I've had one scammer across 3 platforms, but they are definitely out there. And they are out there on every single platform. But if you logged on your ebay and saw you had a 33% return rate (2/6 sales returned= 1/3 = 33%) would you not make some changes? It's crazy the uproar over the $2 fee when, unless you are making less than $20, the $2 is less than the 10% seller fee that was charged. So if you sell $100 a week you now get $98 back verse $90. That seems like a pretty big win. Also, 3 days for a buyer to return is pretty short compared to 30 days on eBay like you mentioned. Sure maybe a scammy person will take advantage once in a blue moon but over all probably not. One suggestion I saw from another big Mercari reseller is they switched to free shipping to help offset the buyer paying the fee. Right? I would much rather pay that $2 fee once a month than the seller fees. I understand some people jumping ship because of the return policy, but as a clothing seller (or as a seller in general), not all customers/buyers read. And not everything we buy online (or in-store) fits. I would much rather pay a little bit more in fees knowing that if it doesn't fit, I can return it (within a reasonable period).

People are going crazy over the changes. Surprisingly, my sales have increased. The lowballers and cheapskates will not purchase because of the extra fees. Leaving quality buyers who want the item. Plus no seller fee equal more profits. To offset the withdrawal fee I wait I have 300 plus before I make that move.

This is a BAD move on Mercari s part. The buyer is now paying outrageous fees … I wanted to buy a $12 item and it would have cost $25 to cover all the fees! And I also sell once in a while, but feel like I need to do free shipping which could easily get out of hand when trying to increase your price to cover it. I’m quitting Mercari!

I think a good way to combat the “pulling out money” is just to keep the balance there. I resell and I keep the balance there to shop with and say I spend $25 of my mercari credits- I then go to my bank account and move $25 from my checking to savings and it’s like I “spent” my own money but I’m avoiding the mercari fees. It’s just a good hack I use :)

$2.00 X how many sellers pulling their own money out of their account = in Mercari's bank? Me thinks it is more than your "that's not much" I'm old enough to remember the banks telling us eliminating tellers and adding ATM would eliminate fees. It happened, for about a year. Personally, I really dislike telling someone that you are going to have to pay in order to buy. Go to a store, when you walk in they tell you to hand over 2 bucks to buy anything. Like or dislike?

Wait, Mercari is accepting returns? I just purchased a pair of shorts that the seller had shrank, but still sold them as the size that is marked inside the clothing label. I went through all the steps to return them, however, Mercari refused stating that the seller had fulfilled her obligations. I believe the seller was aware that the item was already shrank before mailing as she had contacted me after the sale stating that they were 100% cotton and not to put them in the dryer. However, she had obviously already shrank the item. Considering unlisting all my items and moving them to Poshmark and never buying from Mercari again.

Just purchased an item today on mercari. I won't lie, as a buyer these new fees are ridiculous and sucks for the buyers. I'll admit if the seller didn't except such a low offer I would've just moved on because after fees alone with shipping, the final price was still close to $70 on a $50 purchase. I hope this comes back to bite mercari because at the end of the day it doesn't matter if you have a ton of sellers, but no buyers. Only way I'll purchase from here on out is if it's a deal you just can't refuse, otherwise I'll be on ebay or amazon.
