Hans Zimmer's sound track and this film are sharing an ensouled glimpse of where humanity is poised at this moment in time on earth 2023. We don't have much time left. Scientists on Earth will not be able to save humanity or the Earth. The organ section is spectacular! The intensity of hope, the quiet despair of utter hopelessness and profound loss. And woven through this soundtrack for me -- what did you choose humanity? What have you done?

When Hans composed the original version of this, he said he thought of what it meant to be a father. And when he told Christopher Nolan this, Christopher responded with "Now I know what the heart of the story will be".
This makes sense. Because before I had kids and watched this movie, I definitely thought it was amazing. But after I had kids and watched it again, it hit me much more emotionally.

Well then, do I have a surprise for you then, :-) I want you to listen to “Max Richter Infra 5” This is a masterpiece that I usually show my close friends and explain it as me being born at the beginning of the song, then I slowly start walking, then start bicycling, then start school, then my first love and heartbreak, then winning or losing at sports, then graduation, then my first job, then an car accident, then birthdays, fiends, girlfriends, marriage, losing parents, having a child, seeing them go through the stages I went through, then the song going through a loud cacophony of all those emotions at the same time, then I get old, then I start hearing voices of those on the other side of the people that I lost, then I’m on my last breaths on this earth, thennnnnn, music stops, and I die.
That’s how I interpret “Max Richter Infra 5”

Something about it takes me on a journey of emotions that always breaks me. As if I was the one that gave up the ones I love, so I could save them.

When I was 17 I was in a play. On the day of the play, in the final scene the lights went out and we didn't know what to do. We kept going because we didn't want the show to stop. One by one we saw the audience members light up their torches. The final scene was performed with lighting from everyone's phones. It was one of the most magical moments of my life. Things are very different for me now but I found this video and the interstellar soundtrack already was astounding this performance took me back to that moment 6 years ago and I cried my eyes out. Close your eyes and listen to the song. Personally, I believe that this masterpiece is capable of transmitting the development and self-realization of the human being. But after a great triumph there is a great sacrifice. This song really manages to convey every human feeling from that perspective. The movie, beyond the plot, also plays a similar message. It's amazing how a song as such can infinitely multiply a movie. It is a complete masterpiece.

How do you compose something like this? Do you sit down and play each instrument, see if what’s in your head sounds good, and then write the notes on sheet paper? Do you only write the notes down as you hear them in your head and then present it to the orchestra during practice to see how it sounds and tweak what you don’t like during the rehearsal or after? I really want to know the process cause this level of musical creativity is astonishing. To know each instrument’s notes will combine to make beautiful music is a form of genius.

Composing is both the natural born ability to hear the melody as you write the music, and a formulaic art form composers are expected to operate within the bounds of. A composer that breaks with convention, breaks with reliance on the stabilizing norms of classical music. There are varying writing styles, preferences, and workflows in music composition; as there is with any other form of art and or creative writing. However, it’s extremely common for the highest achieving composers to initially write in solitude, hearing each note of each instrument as they write, or hearing the entire composition at once and later fine-tuning individual instruments as needed during practice. Most composers on this level can play every instrument - including ones they don’t know, because once you know how to play at least one instrument in each family (i.e. strings, percussion, winds, piano), you can very quickly adapt to another and get yourself up to speed enough to play it for writing purposes. So yes, those who have the resources/access to a plethora of instruments, like to incorporate playing each instrument at some point in their writing process.
See: TH-cam vid of Serj Tankian (lead singer of System of a Down) composing the orchestral version of his solo album alone in his home studio built in New Zealand. That’s who I think of, for those who like to incorporate playing each instrument into their writing process - but he’s able to take it a step further thanks to modern technology, and record each instrument in ProTools to hear a rough composition, with the added ability to change tempo, pitch, layer multiple tracks to mimic adding more players, and easily swap out different melodies.
Most composers, however, don’t have the financial resources or access that a rockstar like Serj has, so they rely more on themselves and their ability to fully “visualize” the composition in their minds during the ideation and writing process. Beethoven famously composed after he went deaf by using his memory of the sound of each note, each piano key, etc. I took a class in college called “Appreciation of Music,” where I, not a fan of classical music, learned absolutely everything there is to learn about every element of a classical composition, and rigorously tested by my ability to hear and identify each element in short clips played during each exam. Thus, I learned a lot about the stylistic and formulaic choices made in classical composition, how each choice has language informing the player how to play certain notes and melodies, the different arrangements, and the normative yet infinitely complex song structure that exists in classical music. Just like how basic rhyming schemes in lyrics exist for hip hop and rock (i.e. ABAB or AABB), and song structure in popular music dictates verse-chorus-verse - there are the same choices in writing classical compositions, but on a ridiculously complex scale. And just like lyrical rhyming and song structure norms in modern music, by breaking from the formula by incorporating things like dissonant chords or deviations like adding a breakdown, hook, multiple lead vocalists, combining musical styles and genres, etc; that music gives birth to something new, fresh, revolutionary, dark, scary, uneasy - and more emotion can be drawn from the listener by experimenting.
Experimental music exists in every genre - including classical music. Hans Zimmer, like any brilliant composer, knows all the rules so he can break them. His music is as recognizable as his signature, because he broke with convention and established/carved out his own sub-genre, if you will. He was panned long before he became a staple in musical composition for film scoring. It was actually thru film scoring that he was able to find a home for his experimental style that up until that point, had been disregarded by the authorities & gatekeepers of the genre.
Zimmer started as a rejected “heretic” of classical composition - and now he’s perhaps the most influential modern-day composer. His risk-taking made a genre so self-aware of its own obsolescence, as expressed by it’s own naming, “classical,” more relevant and eminent than ever in present-day society worldwide.

Incredible. And yes - we all shed a tear when we hear this, and that's the absolute bliss of Hans Zimmer over Mozart or Beethoven. Also, note that Hans Zimmer's uniqueness comes after 400+ years of orchestra music made everyday by everyone.
