The Olympus OM-1 - The ultimate Exit Camera - Bye bye full frame?

  • The Olympus/OM System OM-1 might be the last camera you will ever need. With crop sensors and lenses this good there could hardly be any reason to upgrade. And full frame mirrorless becomes kinda pointless. A DSLR as a complement is of course another story.

Hey, I bought an e-m5 when it first came out. It was a game changer. Eventually, I got an an e-m1 original version and used the e-m5 as a second body. There have been significant improvements to both the flagship 1 and more compact 5 series, but I still get great results from my mark i versions.

@@robertvsnow Well, the original EM5 was the only option for my budget.
Excellent construction, I would say much better than the plastic version II and I appreciate that it is very compact which I think is the meaning of this system, that is, a better relationship between size, quality, lenses and price. But it is not always applied as a law because there are cheap and good models like the EM5 but there are other expensive bodies and without such good construction, the same with the optics, some too expensive as if they charged you extra for being smaller and lighter .

It has taken me so long to accept what you are saying, but recently I have finally conceded that my MFT is as good and better in many areas than my full frame that I sold to go MFT. I know that sounds like a really weird statement, but there is a story behind it: I am a professor at a major university in the US, and I was doing research that benefited from more depth of field and the in-camera focus stacking (for photogrammetry). Of course, Olympus was the answer. I found after getting my EM1 mark III that I was using my Sony a73 less and less for my work. The Olympus lenses, their quality was second to none. Eventually I decided to sell my a73 to buy more MFT lenses. After selling my FF, I still had this feeling that I wasn't getting the best image quality; not because my images looked bad, but because I listened to the influencers who were ripping on the dynamic range of MFT. Now after going all in on MFT I can proudly say that the gear dost not make one a good photographer, and some of my favorite pictures have come in a small little package!

Gah, within a week this man has exposed the markets I've been taking advantage of for cheap good gear for years. Jokes aside, I've used MFT for work for years (travelling photojournalist) and I've never had anyone contracting me or licensing my images complain about the fact I shot with MFT. My main body setup is an OM-5 (finally upgraded after using an E-M5.iii since release, only because my E-M5.iii bit the dust while covering a flood, rip E-M5.iii) with a 75mm f1.8 prime. Since I focus on lifestyle portraits where I don't want to disturb my subjects, and a lot of my focus is in rural areas/villages in East/Southeast Asia, the 150mm of effective reach, great light gathering at f1.8, and great subject separation all in a tiny package lets me take my shots without people staring. I always have another camera on my other shoulder, usually a Pen-F, with a 15mm f1.7 PanaLeica lens or 20mm f1.4 OM-Sys lens to get 30 and 40mm of effective coverage for when I need wider shots. I also have the f1.2 trio of Olympus primes that are crazy (17, 25, and 45mm giving 34, 50, and 90mm of effective reach at f1.2 of light and tack sharp at wide open) and swap between the 75mm and 45mm. I also have a G9 (mark i, old but great still) in my bag with a 12-100mm f4 usually attached. Used to be an E-M1.iii, but I gave that to my travel/work partner, and the G9 for what it's used for it great (and you can get awesome condition used ones for like 550--600 USD now).
I've had photographers ask what I used for photos, and generally most were surprised when I said the midrange MFT body. Pretty much none of them, be it in the US, Japan, South Korea, etc. scoffed at the gear. I honestly think that almost all the people that scoff at MFT just because it's MFT don't actually do the work for a living. If you are desperate for "creamy backgrounds", the f1.2's can't really be beat in quality versus price, and even something like the Pana Leica 25mm f1.4, either version but V2 has a weather sealing ring among other tiny upgrades, can give great images. There's the 42.5mm f1.4 Nocticron Pana Leica that is one of the best portrait lenses I've used regardless of format. And even the Sigma APS-C lenses like the 56mm f1.4 and 30mm f1.4 are still fairly compact and have insane quality for the cost. The smallest of that trio, the 16mm I think, is too big for MFT IMO, and I'd rather use my 15mm f1.7.

We have a similar Olympus collection and, as a Nikon FX shooter, I definitely agree. Same as you I own the three 1.2 primes (made in Japan!), the 75 and 12-100. I love wide angle FLs so I also bought a copy of the 8-25 F4 which, with that focal range and the superb sharpness, is another of those lenses which make the system worthy. PRO lenses are simply superb in every aspect, the value for money is TOP!

You have the cameras I'm looking to upgrade my GX-85 and EM5ii combo so I would like to ask a very specific question: Would you say you trust your G9 for better video vs OM-5 or OM-1? I have watched a couple of videos for both (albeit in YT only, should probably look for samples somewhere) but felt like they aren't even better to the GX-85's? The goal is to have something that combines the amazing photo capability of the EM5ii with Panasonic's better video (I admit I haven't been in the loop so this may no longer be true). Please and thank you!

I feel I must point out once again that Im talking about MIRRORLESS full frame when I (jokingly) say its starting to become obsolete. And Im honestly starting to feel that way. It doesn’t make much sense when you can get a crop sensor with all the benefits it brings, DSLR or mirrorless medium format. I still use the EOS-R for work, and will for years to come. But if we need to upgrade again, I think I will choose m4/3.

You say so many reasonable things in this video that I wonder how the discussion has become so polarised toward the opposite end of the spectrum on online forums. If I were to identify the causes, I'd look at, in random order: a) TH-cam marketing pushing full frame very aggressively; b) most forum populations being gear heads rather than photographers; c-d) OM and Lumix marketing being admittedly not that great, and production being sluggish not inspiring confidence; e) common misconceptions about size, weight, light-gathering, noise etc spreading at the speed of light, as many other misconceptions in more important aspects of life on the planet 😀 For the same reasons you state, I've been a happy MFT user for 10 years now, and I hope some further releases could help the system to re-gain some momentum - I don't need the format to be "the most successful" one, but I'd at least prefer not to worry about too many people jumping ship, though the comments to this video are very encouraging! Thanks.

I am aging and my back is not the same as it used to be. So I chose to not replace my current system with another which is just marginally lighter. Also, honestly the d850 gives me enough quality, that sensor is still great. And there's the elephant in the room: the cost of FX lenses! A collection similar to my current Nikon one would cost a fortune. So, I'll continue to enjoy the D850 when the bulk is not an issue, for all the rest my go to camera will be the OM-1.

I LOVE Olympus / OM. From their analogue XAs, to their digital Pen cameras and my current OMD E-M1 II as well as some amazing Zuiko (and LUMIX/Leica) glass. I just love it. I do still have a full frame camera, but the Olympus is what I reach for most, especially for travelling.

Great video. I love my MFT's. For wildlife I use the E-M1 Mk.II and Mk.III and for street or a light travel setup I use to use either my E-M10 Mk.II or the tiny Pen E-PL5 but I've just replaced the pair of them with a stunning second hand PEN-F. There is some simply brilliant glass out there for them and some little cheap gems too (for example the Yongnuo FN 25mm f1.7 is a great nifty fifty equivalent that is very sharp but can be bought for peanuts brand new).

I'm a long time Olympus user. I am doing the opposite these days. Moving away from m 4/3 and investing more in FF. I have always been an advocate and supporter and defender of M 4/3. But when I take photos with my sony and my Olympus of the same subject. Thats when I really see the difference. I'm still keeping my OM-1 and my 12-40 2.8 pro. But for now I am investing more in my Sony kit.

Can you really see a difference?
I just don't get it. I've tried to see what full frame offers but it's not a huge difference to my eyes.
Only when I peep I can see the background isn't as smooth but besides that I'd never know.

People do not realize how important in camera photo stacking is. Glad this is mentioned here. Everyone talking about how bokeh is great. I call that a "missed shot" I mean
if the idea of bokeh is to separate the foreground from the background to make the image "pop" it failures to do so, as usually with every bokeh shot, its always soft around
the edges. With photo stacking, you can take multiple shots, and the camera stitches everything together. And you have an image that is sharp as a whole.
I challenge anybody, without using software. Take a jewelry ring, and take a close up shot, and try to make that ring "in focus" in all side of the ring. What you will get is
one part focused and the rest out of focused. Sure this will please the people who go crazy about bokeh.
Also another important feature is the best IBIS in the business. Lots of people failure to mention this too. This is crucial, when using telephoto lenses. I am glad that
this channel covered alot of things. I currently use the EM1-Mark III the best all around camera that packs in punch. Not to mention you can even add a Metabones
adapter and use Canon lenses. What else you can ask for, the lens possibilities are endless.

This is how I feel about my Nikon Z6.
Image quality wise, there is nothing that a newer camera would give me, autofocus wise I have no problems with it at all, and I shoot wild life and sports easily (much easier than with my previous main camera, the Fuji X-H1, as good as this camera was), and when it comes to video... I just slap a recorder on there and I can record 12bit ProRes RAW. Generally just fine with the 10bit N-Log though, I've alreaady produced a couple of documentaries with it.
And when it comes to burst rate, I already don't need 12fps, I'd be happy with 8.
I can see why the OM-1 is a little bit of a "better" long term future proof camera. In a lot of ways, it's the true successor to the OMD E-M1 mark II (which is is still relevant today and a BARGAIN. Probably would be my entry point if I was going into MFT. Can be a likker backup body to an OM-1 too). To me the OMD E-M1 mark III was more of a Mark 2.5, the evolutions were really small over the mk II.

I felt the desire to upgrade one month ago, I thought that after so many years the progress made in IQ and DR would be worth it. Well, after some research ... I gave up and I just bought a GX9 and a couple more prime lenses.
And I'm having lots of fun :D

I have just gone full Olympus. Build quality is top tier and much cheaper than other brands. I thought the tiny sensor would hold the image quality back but I was wrong. I do a lot of macro and wildlife, and because of the extra depth of field and double focal lengths (of lenses) I find it easier to get the shots I need at a much lower cost than other brands.

Totally agree with. After 15 years, where I used Olympus e30 with 12-60swd, moved to Nikon D90 > Fujifilm x20 > Sony RX10 > Pentax k3 > KP > K3mkiii with limited lens and star lenses top - finally after 8 years with great Pentax I get back to m4/3 OM-1 and OM-5 with PRO 12-40 40-150. Reason? Compactness of that system.

You said that the detail is "enough" and the dynamic range is "more than sufficient." I think that's great to hear - not enough people are happy with having "enough" for their work and think they need to chase FF. I chose M43 for the exact same reasons: I got realistic about my needs as a photographer. I rarely print larger than 16 x 20 and the DR is just enough. Especially with modern AI noise reduction. Moving to M43 opened up a huge library of small lenses, especially the incredible lightweight zooms and medium-speed primes. The best weather sealing of any brand. And all of the computational photography modes that other brands are ignoring. 20 MP MFT is more than sufficient for me!

Coming back to photography after 7-8 years out. Starting with a new system as whilst great, my Nikon D7000 is a bit long in the tooth now (and I have GAS 😆).I hired a Sony A7iv with 24-70 f2.8 GM and then a Fuji X-H2 with 16-55 f2.8 red label. Bought the Fuji, then was handed an OM-1 with 12-40 f2.8 Pro to play with.
I can't get over how compact and light the OMDS setup is compared to the other (especially FF systems). I can't fault the images either for my use case. Yes I have to think/adapt a bit more if I want blurrier backgrounds but that's about it.
Couldn't find anywhere to hire the OM-1 so I now have an OM1Mk2 on my desk alongside the Fuji and they're going to be battling it out for a couple of months before I decide which system to go with. Currently I love them both for different reasons but as I'm only a hobbyist photographer, I really can't justify having two systems, so one will have to go.

Since the dawn of full frame digital cameras starting with the Canon 5D it was clear that a rivalry was about to start. Olympus stuck to what they believed can be just as good or even better in many ways. The brand attracted full frame die hards who has experienced the build quality and superiority of the Zuiko lenses. And it's not difficult to become an Olympus believer. I really think the Zuiko glass are special.
I really think the Olympus brand is very underrated.

I just got myself a OM1 Mark II and sold my R6 Mark II. Got that one mainly for macros. Coming from Canon its night and day difference. Autofocus is actually usable, pictures look sharper and i can use a flash while bracketing! Crazy concept for Canon somehow.
Now I start eyeballing the telezoom lenses for some Zoo photography, the 40-150 f2.8 might be the best pick for that. Heard mixed opinions about the 100-400 lens unfortunately. Otherwise that might've replaced my R7 with the RF 100-400 which is pretty good.

Amazing video as always but imo the real reason why this video exists would be summed up by the 2 points mentioned during the video . The size of the kit and most importantly the Value For Money . And I say your very lucky to get this professional kit for around 2100-2200 euro. But if you where to buy all that kit brand new , it's would have costed not very far off from full frame .
And this is where I believe camera company should start to realise the importance of providing actual value , instead of trying to upkeep their brand value . I wish camera companies would stop making 15-20 different lenses at different levels of prices , when we all know it's only the pro and semi pro line of lenses that people truly value and which holds their value. It's as if the either industry gatekeeps the pro lenses , so that customers might eventually pay the very high markup , which companies can easily reduce the price with the help of economy of scale .
The best example would be how 50mm 1.4 primes where considered to be affordable jump during the 70-80's , back when companies used to give fast aperture primes as kit lenses , which now we reap the benefit by getting a vintage 50mm f1.8 for pocket change!
The reason why olympus was not popular during release is purely because of how expensive they are brand new and how less of a value they provide compared to ff for the price ! And this is what makes or breaks the sales for these camera . The ONLY reason why m4/3 has a resurgence in past year or so is purely due to now good selection of used stock in the market at the half or 1/3 the retail price !
