    Charles is always pushing the boundaries of music & thought. Even today, at 82 years of age, he continues to produce vital, probing music. The 2 concerts of his that I attended remain formative experiences.

    This man is for sure one of the greatest voices in jazz music. Since his quartet with Jarrett til now, he's always at the top!

      Paulo, with all due respect, it was Mr Charles Lloyd who displayed generosity and goodness of heart to include the very youthful Keith Jarrett on his playing gig. Now, please do not get it wrong, I love Keith and his tremendous talents. Yet let it be crystal clear that Mr Lloyd is the teacher, mentor and person of guidance for Mr. Jarret and not the other way around as your post somewhat inferred.

      @@aubreycamachomd5717 Thank you for clarifying. I always remember that Downbeat magazine supposedly was critical of Charles Lloyd at one time. Charles Lloyd in fact is a man to emulate.

    "Thinking about sense-objects
    Will attach you to sense-objects;
    Grow attached, and you become addicted;
    Thwart your addiction, it turns to anger;
    Be angry, and you confuse the mind;
    Confuse your mind, you forget the lesson of experience;
    Forget experience, you lose discrimination;
    Lose discrimination, and you miss life’s only purpose."

    I saw this very band in the summer of this year at Newport Jazz Fest. Incredible music, and i'll never forget seeing the crowd in Charles' mirrored sunglasses!

    Who could not like this. A great piece of work. And of peace. The bass brings it to a quiet deep place, before it takes off into the freedom that it was created for. Genius

    I absolutely love how Llyod jerks around - even raising his feet occasionally - while he's playing. From here, it feels and looks like he wants the whole note to saturate his entire being and find good feeling in his blood. Charles Lloyd is one musician with an incredible body of music on his résumé! And fantastic concert!

    Indeed a Genius! What I always marvel from CL is is his ability to experiment and despite his age manages to collaborate with emergent Jazz Musicians and produces something extraordinary.

    He knows bliss in the Atman
    And wants nothing else.
    Cravings torment the heart:
    He renounces cravings.
    I call him illumined.
    Not shaken by adversity,
    Not hankering after happiness:
    Free from fear, free from anger,
    Free from the things of desire.
    I call him a seer, and illumined.

    Straight from Bhagavad Gita, Puranas, and Upanishads. Ecstatic bliss of illumination.
    And boy, does it remind me of Alice Coltrane.

    The uncontrolled mind
    Does not guess that the Atman is present:
    How can it meditate?
    Without meditation, where is peace?
    Without peace, where is happiness?

    Even a mind that knows the path
    Can be dragged from the path:
    The senses are so unruly.
    But he controls the senses
    And recollects the mind
    And fixes it on me.
    I call him illumined.
    Thinking about sense-objects
    Will attach you to sense-objects;
    Grow attached, and you become addicted;
    Thwart your addiction, it turns to anger;
    Be angry, and you confuse your mind;
    Confuse your mind, you forget the lesson of experience;

    The bonds of his flesh are broken.
    He is lucky, and does not rejoice:
    He is unlucky, and does not weep.
    I call him illumined.
    The tortoise can draw in its legs:
    The seer can draw in his senses.
    I call him illumined.
    The abstinent run away from what they desire
    But carry their desires with them:
    When a man enters Reality,
    He leaves his desires behind him.

    Discrimination as in the ability to distinguish between the sacred and the profane.

      Prejudice is just one form of discrimination. To discern things as to their relative good or value is also discrimination. Discrimination can mean making good choice.

    In addition to being a very overrated jazzman, Lloyd is the other of totally stupid and laughable quotes such as this one: ''Women are as connected to music as women are to Africa. Women are all connected to the land and music is connected to the land. The drums come from Africa and have supernatural powers. Women and drums must be respected. I'm a shaman, I go out into nature, I talk to the trees and plants'' or ''I am a shaman, I go out into nature, I talk to the trees and plants'' ....LOL!
